Dave, Since you were so generous to look up something for Barbara, I wonder if I could impose on you to see if there is any mention of the WARE family in Grant County. They were in Big Patch mostly. Thanks so much. Libby Baker
Could someone who has the History of Grant County, Wisconsin 1881 please look on page 942 for Joseph McGirk. He is my great-grandfather and let me know what it says. Thanks so much Barbara BYoung128@aol.com

Surnames: McCloud Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lEC.2ACE/434.2 Message Board Post: Rick, Here are a few more things on you McCloud's. 1860 Census, Beetown, Grant, WI, Pg. 13, 7 Jul 1860, Household 1360 Cornelius McLoud, 56, Miner, PA Mary, 50, VA Dudley, 21, Miner, VA Pauline E., 21, Domestic, VA Harriet J., 15, Domestic, VA Alvira, 12, WI John O., 10, WI Ann B., 7, WI It would appear that Cornelius came to Wisconsin about 1848 or so from Virginia. Here are some marriage records for his siblings in Grant Co. None list Mary's maiden name, but they all list Cornelius and Mary as parents: McCLOUD, DUDLEY D. married ADKINS, NANCY 10 Aug 1862 Grant WI, Bk 3, Pg. 168 THOMAS, EDWARD M. married McCLOUD, HARIET JANE 16 Jul 1868 Grant WI, Bk 4, Pg. 146 ASHLEY, DANIEL B. married McLEOD, PAULINA 12 Jan 1862 Grant WI, Bk 3, Pg 142 (Mary is listed as Mary Ann in this record.) John's brother Dudley is interesting. There are two conflicting accounts of his Civil War Service: Dudley D McCloud Residence: Boscobel, Wisconsin Occupation: Enlisted as a Private on 14 November 1863 Enlisted in Company C, 35th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin Deserted Company C, 35th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 27 February 1864 Dudley McCloud Residence: Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin Occupation: Enlisted as a Private on 19 November 1863 Drafted in Company H, 37th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 19 November 1863. Killed Company H, 37th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 18 June 1864 in Petersburg, VA Well, Dudley D. of Boscobel appears to have deserted and Dudley of Prairie du Chien killed in battle. The following Civil War Pension index entry appears to be a little of each: Dudley D. McCloud, widow Nancy McCloud, Co. H, 37th WI Infantry, filed 22 Nov 1864. The Dudley D. and spouse/widow Nancy matches with his marriage record. Per "Memorable Happenings in The Grant County Herald, 1843-69," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: McCloud, Dudley D. married Nancy Adkins, 10 Aug 1862, Little Grant Twp., recorded in the 19 Aug 1862 issue of the Herald. McCloud, Nancy E., died 22 Feb 1866, Joe Adkins administrator, recorded in the 14 Aug 1866 issue of the Herald. Here is a web page with a little information on the Cornelius McCloud Family: http://ansearchen7.homestead.com/OurMcCloudFamily.html There is an e-mail contact that may help you out. It remains a mystery where any of these folks were in 1870 WI. There don't appear to be any likely sightings of John O.'s siblings. I'm still checking on a few things, but am not sure what else I might find. Do you know where John McCloud was living in 1900?? Dave Taft

It was really nice of you to keep searching for Quincy for me. Elva's b.month and yr are correct. My grt.aunt, Mildred(who is Elva's daughter), thought she was born in Wisconsin and put it on her death certificate(I have a copy of it). This is truely strange. Do you think that Iowa could have been listed in error on the 1900 census? I ask this because my gma was born in IL and so was Elva's sister, Sylvia. One thing's for sure, she died here in CA., in the city of Pomona, Los Angeles County, 10/13/1984. Sylvia's b. info is correct, too. She died here in CA., also. In West Covina, Los Angeles County. DOD-03/19/1987. Sylvia m. Harold M. Boothe and they have one child (that I know of), June M. Boothe(info unknown). Sylvia and Harold are buried next to each other in Inglewood Park Cemetary/Mortuary, Inglewood, CA. I know nothing of Earl. Elva's d.cert. shows there mother's name to be: EVELYN MCCAMISH born Wisconsin. Quincy, per your prior post with the info from both the 1880(his age was 12) and 1870(his age was 2) census look-ups you did, shows to have been born in 1868 not 1869 as stated in the 1900 census. All three census are showing b.place as WI. His marriage to Evelyn had probably been in somewhere between 1890-1900. Farrand website states marriage to be Jul 16, 1900. Which seems strange when 1900 census states married 9 yrs. The website also lists his dob as 07/17/ 1968 and dod as 06/13/1928 with the source being Evelyn's church records that are listed as being here in Los Angeles, CA. Which also indicates to me that my dear grt-grt-gma(whom has been so hard to find) must be deceased somewhere here in CA. (Another new search for me! LOL) Go figure seems like most all my lines came to CA. at some point in time. Just wish I knew where all the living ones were. Seems I have alot of mysteries to solve within my family. "Karen" Los Angeles Co, CA.

This shows Elva born in Iowa and Sylva and Earl in Illinois. Hmm! I would assume that the places of birth were probably correct since the census was taken in 1900. The information could have been provided by anyone in the family. Provided the birth month and year are correct, I would suppose the places are correct as well. Here is another mystery for you to run after. Dave Taft Arlington, TX

In researching my family history, I've become "stuck" on my great grandmother : Violet Eastman. From her social security info, I know she was born Oct. 18, 1893 or 94 (she never would reveal her age to anyone !!!) in Wisconsin. I believe she was the daughter of Gurley De Witt Eastman, born April 1867 in Montfort, WI. His wife's name was Lillie Moore. He had three daughters : Violet, Pansey, and Blossom - but no one know's their birthdates, so I can't be sure if Gurley's daughter Violet, is "my" Violet. I would greatly appreciate any info - or any suggestions on where I could find out some info (I'm in Ohio !) Thanks a bunch ! Deanna Morgan dmorgan@gatorgrit.com

Recorded in Book 6, Page 20. John is recorded as the son of Cornelius and Mary (Unknown) McCloud. Mary the daughter of James and Lydia (Unknown) Mahan. A possibility for Mary's parents from the 1870 census are: 1870 Census, Lancaster, Grant, WI, Pg. 254, Household 410 James Mahan, 40, PA Mattie, 25, WI Sarah, 16, WI Mary, 15, WI Ashley, 10, WI Anna, 5, WI Alice, 3, WI Frederick, 3/12, WI (born in March) (Question is, was Mattie a second wife based on the children's birthdates??) No sign of Cornelius in the 1870 WI census index. Something intreguing here: From, "Memorable Happenings in The Grant County Herald Newspaper, 1870-79," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: McLeod, Anna, married William Hildebrand, March 1877, Orient, [Adair], IA. Recorded in the 20 Mar 1877 issue of the Herald. Was Anna, John's sister?? In the 1870 Grant Co., WI census there is an Anna McCloud, age 16, Domestic Servant, born in WI living in the John and Catherine White household in Glen Haven Twp., Grant, WI. This may be here, but no other McCloud's I can find in the county. Wish I had more to help you out, but this might provide "M's" first name who was living with John in the 1880 census. He married Mary Mahan in 1873 in Grant County. I am looking for any information I can get no matter how small. His mother's first name started with an "M". In 1880 it "appears" they were in Orient Township,Adair County,IA. John and Mary had 3 children in 1880...James Oscar,John, and a third child with the first initial "B." I know in 1920 John and his son James are both in Oklahoma. It appears that there was a divorce or agreed to separation between John and Mary. It is my understanding that John raised James and Mary raised John aka Johnny. It is not known what happened to "B." I need help filling in the gaps.
