Hi Deanna, Yes! I know about the California Death index. I was there this morning look at CULLEN's who died there. They are my husbands grandparents. There use to be a birth index but they took it off of the internet. Hello ! Anyone out there have any information on the Eastmans of Montfort, WI ? Specifically, I'm looking for my great-grandmother, Violet Eastman. I know she was born October 18, 1893 (or 1894 - she never revealed to ANYONE her real age !) in Wisconsin. I found on the Eastman Genealogy page that a Violet Eastman was born in Wisconsin to a Gurley De Witt Eastman born in Montfort, WI in April of 1867 and Lillie Moore. HOWEVER, it did not list her birthday, so I can't be sure she's "my" Violet. I'm also just guessing (and hoping !) that Gurley stayed in Montfort or at least Grant County. Would anyone have access to birth records for the 1890's in Grant County ? I don't mind paying for copies, and I don't even mind paying someone to look up records - I'd just like to know first that I'm at least heading in the right direction.......... Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated ! Deanna Morgan - dmorgan@gatorgrit.com aka "stumped on Violet Eastman in Dayton, Ohio"
A couple of weeks ago a lady named Helen asked about one of her relatives, Ellen (Spease) Julius. I answered and asked her for some dates so that I could varify if the Ellen Spease she was looking for was the same one in my Julius family. Here is some information on the Ellen Spease that married my ggreatuncle, Louis C. Julius. Louis was married to Elizabeth Hallenberger on 20 Nov 1961. Elizabeth died on 7 May 1883 leaving her husband to raise their children: Charles Henry (Karl) Julius born 20 Aug 1862 and married Caroline Haas on 18 Mar 1886, remarried Marie August Wiskow; Caroline Julius was born Jul 1864 - died 26 Jan 1889; Louie Johann Ludwig Julius was born 19 Mar 1867 and died 1882; Katherine Elizabeth Julius born on 28 Jan 1869, married Jesse William Blackburn on 6 Nov 1889 and died 5 Apr 1950 and Boy Julius born and died on 28 Jan 1869 Louis married Ellen Spease on 13 Apr 1884. Ellen was born on 17 Feb 1849 and died on 25 Mar 1938. As far as my records go I have no children listed for Louis and Ellen. I have sent question to the families that stayed in Wisconsin. But from what I gather, they don't have a records either. Will keep trying. Don't know if this helps or confuses the issue. Helen can e-mail me at my address: oldcherub@rap.midco.net Beverly Miller, South Dakota
Anyone familiar with this? The 1870 census was supposed to enumerate people as of 1 June 1870. My gr-grandfather is not listed on it and I've been working under the premise that he was dead by that time. I got a copy of the 1870 mortality index and there is a name that could possibly be him (except for the age) and it says he died in June. Is this June 1869 or June 1870? I suppose I should look at the actual mortality schedule instead of this index and double-check that age. It says "20" but someone wrote "(5)" in pencil in front of it and I don't know what that's supposed to mean. He would have been about 47 in 1870. Robin
I randomly looked at a few pages in the 1870 Grant Co. census. About half were dated in Jun and about half were in July with a few in August. While the census taker was supposed to ignore deaths between 1 Jun and the date he/she took the census, I don't think they always did so. So if this person is your gr-gr grandfather, he may of died in Jun of 1869 or Jun of 1870. Dave, Thank you so much for the lookup. I'm eager to find more information on the Ware family. Simon Ware is my great grandfather and was b 1853 in Big Patch, married Sarah Frances Wilson b 1852 in Madison, Indiana. Simon's father was Frederick b abt 1809 in England. Frederick and Elizabeth had: John Gordon b 1841 married Emma Ellen Gordon b 1845 William Gordon b 1847 (I wonder if that's him), Frederick Jr. b 1851 married Louisa Catherine Wilson Simon (my line), married Sarah Frances Wilson (Louisa's sister) Mary b 1855 married a Baker Robert b 1857 married Alice Lyght Sarah Frances b 1859, Betsy b 1860, George Washington b 1861 and finally Emma b 1867 married Moody Seems William was the first of the family born in the US (PA I think). All the rest were born in Smelser Township. Simon, my great grandfather, had: Gordon Spencer (born Clarence O. he changed his name, but I found him!!) 1879 my line Lillian Edna b 1882 married Albert Heinz Inez Estella b 1887 married Frances Nichols Charles Edward b 1892 (I'm eager to find out more about him, I have photos) Walter b 1909 I have found Simon and Sarah in the 1920 census but I don't know when they died. So if you come across the WARE name I'd appreciate your keeping me in mind. Thanks again. Libby

Here are a couple of additional items that should be of interest. 1850 Census, Town of White Oak Springs, District No. 5, Lafayette, WI, Page 469, 18 Sep 1850, Household 45: Cornelius McLoud, 44, Day Laborer, PA Mary, 46, VA William S., 16, Farmer, VA Dudley, 9, VA Pauline E., 7, VA Harriet J., 5, VA Elvira V., 2, WI I still cannot figure out where in Wisconsin or elsewhere John O. or mother, Mary, were in 1870. They seem to have disappeared until the 1880 census. But, they are both still in Iowa in 1885. 1885 Iowa State Census, Orient, Adair, IA, Page 363, 15 Apr 1885, Household 107 (all in the same household): Alvira White, 34, Keeping House, WI, Widow Nettie White, 14 Valorous White, 12 Eddie White, 8? Burt White, 8 Mary McCloud, 76, Keeping House, VA, Widow John McCloud, 33, Farming, WI, Married Oscar McCloud, 9 John J. McCloud, 7 Well, here are John and his mother, Mary, in 1885 Orient, IA. But, wife Mary is missing. Really strange. Had they split up by then? Also, son "B." McCloud appears to have died. I have listed the only birthplaces recorded above. I assume that Alvira White must be John's sister Alvira McCloud from the 1860 Wisconsin census. Alvira doesn't appear in the Grant Co., WI marriage records so I assume she married "Mr." White in Iowa. Alvira White had children in 1880, but I can't seem to locate them in Wisconsin or Iowa. As you continue to search, consider McCloud, McLeod, McLoud, etc. as possibilities. Most names were written down the way the person hearing them "thought" they were spelled. Well, hopefully this information helps out in your search. Dave Taft
