Aleise, Thank you for the offer to do a Plat Map look-up. Does your map show a parcel of land in south end of Wingville or north end of Clifton township owned by Michael Steel/Amelia Wachtler about 1860? John, The one I have shows all the parcels of land in Grant County, along with the number of acres owned. Where there is a house, it shows who is residing there, mostly men's names. There is also an index in the back that gives the names of the town and city residents along with their occupation, or where they work and the year they first came to Grant County. I have been told there are three cemeteries in Watterstown township, but the Wis. State Old Cemetery Society doesn't have them copied. Hi Larry and List, I had an inquiry from Larry Pine regarding Grant Co. Plat maps based on some of the list discussion this week. I thought it would be best to send my reply to the list as well since it is probably of interest to many. There are early Plat maps for Grant Co., WI, but I don't have access to any of them. Nor are they listed with the LDS. I'm sure copies are found at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison as well as the Karrmann library in Platteville. >From what I understand there are at least 3 pre-1900 Plat Maps for the county done in the 1860's, 1877, and 1895. The Karrmann Library's catalog indicates that they have the 1877 and 1895 maps. They may have others that are not in their on-line catalog. Some time ago the President of the Grant Co. Genealogical Society told me they were working on a long-term project of indexing and then re-printing these plat maps. But, I suspect this is at least 4-5 years out. You may want to contact the Karrmann library and see if they can help you out. There may be a small fee. http://www.uwplatt.edu/~swwis/ Dave Taft -----Original Message----- From: Larry Pine [mailto:ljpine@apu.edu] Sent: Saturday, August 03, 2002 12:00 AM To: David W. Hi Priscilla, what are the chances that he moved to Seattle, also? I just found the graves of GG Lucy and Alphonso in Everett, WA so King and/or Snohomish County might be places to search. I'm going to the Archives next week for a few hours and may have time to check the census. Sherry

Over the last five years I have joined many such lists in different parts of the country/world, and the responsiveness of the folks in Grant County is very impressive! And very helpful! Thank you! Thank you Di for sharing this tidbit about a J. Stevens in Potosi. Its entirely possible this is my James Stevens/Stephens. Could SKS please check the 1860 census for a Stevens/Stephens family in Potosi Township? Hopefully my g-grandmother Elizabeth Stephens, b. 1851, will be among the family members! Odd. 1860 Census, Glen Haven, Grant, WI, Pg. 188, 30 Jun 1860, Household 817 Edward Metcalf, 26, Farmer, $1900, $400, ENG Hannah, 27, ENG James M., 8/12 months, WI Odd again, this seems to be them. In Glen Haven in 1860 and 1870, but not there is 1870. Also, based on the 1860 census, Edward and Hannah had probably only been married about a year. But where did they marry? Not in Grant Co. so far as I can tell. In 1860 Glen Haven, Household 813 was a George and Sarah Metcalf, possibly a brother to Edward. A George Metcalf married Sarah Ray on 25 Mar 1855 in Grant Co. Recorded in Book 1, Page 264. This George was recorded as the son of George and Ann (Unknown) Metcalf. Who knows, maybe a possibility. Household 626 had a Matthew and Hannah Metcalf. Household 628 a William and Elizabeth Metcalf. All of these Metcalf men were born in England and at least some of them were probably related. Per the Grant Co. marriage records: George William Metcalf married Mary Elena Hutchcroft, 22 Feb 1885, recorded in Bk. 10, Page 288. George recorded as the son of Edward and Hannah (Unknown) Metcalf. Mary the daughter of Robert and Jane (Unknown) Hutchcroft. Belle Metcalf married George E. Hutchcroft, 29 Dec 1886, recorded in Bk. 10, Page 387. Belle recorded as the daughter of Edward and Hannah (Unknown) Metcalf. George the son of Thomas and Jane (Unknown) Hutchcroft. Interesting, based on the death's listed further on, it would appear that Mary Elena and George E. were siblings. Their father seems to be Thomas Hutchcroft. The name Robert must have been an error or a middle name. Edward Metcalf married Ida May Hutchcroft, 26 Dec 1900, recorded in Book 13, Pg. 51. Edward recorded as the son of Edward and Hanah (Binks) Metcalf. Ida May the daughter of Unknown parents. (They may be on the marriage records, but aren't in my marriage book. Hmm, another Hutchcroft; probably related is some manner.) Per the Grant Co. death records: Edward Grant Metcalf, age 47, married, died 12 Apr 1911, recorded in Book 12, Pg. 515. Edward recorded as the son of Edward and Hannah (Binks) Metcalf. George William Metcalf, age 67, married to Mary Hutchcroft, died 10 Feb 1930, recorded in Book 22, Page 470. George W. recorded as the son of Edward and Hannah (Binks) Metcalf. Isabel (Metcalf) Hutchcroft, age 55, married to George Hutchcroft, died 26 Oct 1926, recorded in Book 19, Pg. 552. Isabel recorded as the daughter of Edward and Hannah (Binks) Metcalf. Mary (Hutchcroft) Metcalf, age 57, died 5 Apr 1914, recorded in Book 13, Pg. 12. Hello Fellow Grant Co. Researcher, I no longer have the digests which had this thread, but I do recall seeing a search for James? STEPHENS in the 1860? census for Hazel Green. I don't know if this is connected or will help the researcher at all, but found on the link following, in an 1868 plat map of Paris Township with a large southeastern portion of Potosi Twp, see J. STEVENS listed in Potosi. Hope this may help you find your kin in census. http://genealogy.rootsweb.com/~amerikin/wi/index.html#grant Potosi did have quite a lot of miners and has a wonderful Historical Society site, linked from Robin H. Kaspar's Grant County WIGenWeb site, on the Genealogy Links page, under Grant Co. Links. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigrant/ I've no further info on an index of the plat map, which must exist(ed) somewhere, since so many plots are marked only with reference numbers or initials. Likely the GCGS would have info on such an index if one survives. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigrant/gcgensoc.htm Many Successful Returns--findings! Hi again list, I'm looking for info on my GG Grandmother's family. She was Hannah Isabelle "Belle" Metcalf b. 1/3/1871 in Glen Haven and d. 10/26/1926 in Beetown. She was the daughter of Edward Metcalf and Hannah Binks. I have no information on them whatsoever. Is anyone else researching this line? I don't know if Belle had siblings or not. I know she married George Ellsworth "Barney" Hutchcroft on 12/29/1886 in Glen Haven Township and I know about their children to some extent (Bob Orr in Iowa gave me a bunch on the Hutchcrofts). Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer on this line. Michael

One never knows who else is currently reading, nor who else in the future may come across the listing and find a connection. It's happened to me! :) Mari Grant County Mailing List Admin

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lEC.2ACE/444.1.1 Message Board Post: I am looking for a death date and place of burial for my ancestor a Lansil Edgecomb father to Marilla, Ezra, Rufus, and Sarah Ann Edgecomb. Lansil and his wife Malinda migrated sometime between 1850 and 1860 to the Boscobel area from Ohio. Lansil was born around 1815. Also looking for a Caleb Walthart family. I can find them in the census with some children listed, one of them being my direct ancestor, but I have no idea of his death or resting place either. Also looking for the parentage of my direct ancestor George W. Rowley who served in the Civil War with the 33rd. Any ideas or thoughts etc. would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Melissa C.
