Catherine, Here is a link to the WI Department of Transportation. They have modern WI county maps in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format. The downloads are quite large, but the maps very detailed. http://www.dot.state.wi.us/dtid/bhd/county_maps.html The maps show township names as well as Township and Range numbers. On the map, markings such as T-3-N, and R-2-W, would be Township 3 North, Range 2 West, or Harrison Township. You can also purchase larges county maps and detailed township maps from this site for very reasonable prices. For a basic map of the townships, without Town and Range numbers see: http://members.cowtown.net/dtaft/Townshipmaps1.html If you already have the Township and Range numbers and directions, please send them to me or the list and I can translate them into Townships for you. Hope this helps you out. Dave Taft
Hello all. I've found some interesting code numbers in the 1930 census......I'd like to know if anyone can help me decipher what they designate.....next to my great Uncle Joseph Dvorak's name, it has his occupation, Commercial Salesman. Then next column it says Monuments....after that is a code, 4290. On my great Uncle Frank, it says Laborer, and then Odd Jobs....after that, is the code 7899. Can anyone tell me what these numbers mean? Thanks so much! Sincerely John Dvorak GCGS Oh what a tangled web we weave! When first we practice GENEALOGY!

My father barely remembers his father, and this is where I am stuck. He will be 60 tomorrow, so his natural father, Gordon Louis Smith, would have been around about 1920-1924. My dad had his SS# but lost it! RUMOR has it that Gordon was born and raised in Platteville, as was my dad's mother, Ada Louise Johnson. At the age of 19, and against Ada's parent's opinion, Ada and Gordon had my dad, Archie in Janesville, WI. Whether they were actually married is not known, but my dad's early memories are him sitting on Gordon's knee; Gordon was wearing a military uniform (which service? Not known). Ada soon after remarried to Bill Schaffer and they were together a long time before she died in 1995. The last we heard before then is that Gordon died in a car crash in California?? Does anyone have any ideas about tracking Gordson down? Checking with LDS index yields some results that COULD match, but with a common last name and possibly no marriage record, where to look? Thanks for reading, and I hope to hear from someone..... Mark Smith New Brighton, MN
John, Great question for many searching the 1930 census. The following is provided from the National Archives site: http://1930census.archives.gov/ What do the columns on the schedule marked "code" mean? Following questions 21 and 26, the Bureau listed codes. These codes provide no additional information. After the Bureau collected the census schedules, the staff, not the enumerator, coded the information on occupations and nativity using codes established for the 1930 census. The Bureau staff tabulated this data to create the statistical summaries for its reports to Congress. >From what you have stated, it would appear that your Uncle Joseph was a tombstone salesman by trade in 1930. Uncle Frank just appears to have been doing Odd Jobs at the time. The site linked above provides all kinds of information on the 1930 census. For other years and other data at the archives for the researcher, go to the National Archives Research Room at: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/index.html Dave Taft

And the more we can help each other not waste out time with a post that has nothing to do with us, the better. Many of us are on multiple Lists. I do think this direction is in the original "net-iquette" instructions in using the Boards -- or any place where you post. But I wonder how many people read those instructions? Sometimes we just need to remind the newbies. Kathleen

From what I have, I can say that he is not in my direct line from the 1830's--unless he is also called by a middle name. I am very interested in looking at your web pages. My GGGrandparents were in a book or two about the settling of Grant County, WI and Osceola Co., Iowa. Thanks very much for replying. Kathleen LPurch6636@aol.com

However, I was told the census was taken in June, so if she died in April, it would have been 1870. I don't know, so of course, appreciate your help.

I'm only interested in the WI family. My ggrandmother was Katrina Zemlicka and she died in Apr. of 1870 at the age of 42. Her husband's name was Paul, and they had a son, Frank (my grandfather) and a daughter Anna who married a McCusker and moved to Oshkosh. You are probably many years younger than I, so if they are related to you, they may be your gggrandparents. I have your e mail address as mwg372.merr.com. Is that correct? I'll be waiting anxiously to hear from you again. This is the first time I have been able to trace my Zemlicka ggrandparents, and I find it very exciting. Thanks.

What was her age at death, what was her husbands name, male childrens' name?

Thank you Muscoda people! Frank Groves' store has stirred many memories. Samuel (1827-1900) and Mary Blackledge Groves brought their family to Wisconsin from Jefferson Co., Ohio near the end of the 1850's. Samuel was the grandson of a Rev. War soldier and his father has served in the War of 1812. Sam and Mary had seven children and then Mary died of blood poisoning in 1878. Samuel married twice more, to Mary Devoe, a marriage that ended in divorce, and to Harriet (Dora) Pettygrove. Sam had served in the 20th Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War and was about 57 when he married 26 year old Dora in 1884. Dora was only two years older than Sam's youngest son, Samuel Jr. A year later, Sam and Dora had a son, Frank D. Frank D. was born 23 Sept 1885 in Grant Co. He married twice, 1st to Lulu Wood (1886-1922) and 2nd (in 1923 at Richland Co.) to Nellie Marie Pickard (?-1951). I don't think there were any children to the first marriage, but Frank and Nellie had a daughter Maurine in 1925. I found a Maurine D. Fralick, (b. 2 Sept 1925, died 10 Jul 2000, last residence Wilton, Muscatine, IA), on the Social Security Index that I think might be her. Frank died 17 Nov 1970 in Richland Co according to Mr. Thompson's index of Richland Co. deaths. I have sent for cemetery records and will do an update of this family when I get them. Thank you again Serena in Michigan
