    1. [WIGRANT] library hours
    2. Does anyone know the hours of the library at Platteville and also of the Veteran's Museum in Madison? We're planning a trip over there in a week or so and don't want to have either of them closed when we get there. I don't have the E-Mail address for either, so that would be helpful if anyone has them Thanks. Earlene Hutsell OK1WE1@aol.com

    3. If they did live in Potosi, it must have been in the town proper, I didn't see them in the rural areas on the map in Potosi Township. I'm not sure if these maps are still available or not. It would be worth a try, maybe at the Karmann Library in Platteville. You might try asking the people in the Wisconsin Room at that Library. Unfortunately, I don't have the address or phone number of that Library, but I know there are people on this List who do. Maybe David Taft can help there. 1. Re: [WIGRANT] DOT Maps -County, Township & City
    2. Since Dave posted the WI DOT maps I went snooping around to find many other states have similar sites, and since many of our Grant County folk also had connections to the state of Iowa, I thought I'd mention that Iowa's site has the same type of county and township maps, and also has city maps. Wonderful resource. Thanks Dave! IA County Map files available for Download http://www.msp.dot.state.ia.us/trans_data/dlalphabetcounty.html The URL is one line ending in "/dlalphabetcounty.html" without the quotes. Iowa maps are set at a 90 degree counter clockwise orientation (north to viewer's left), so don't get a sore neck! <smile> Di -- In a message dated 02/8/14 6:50:32 AM, WIGRANT-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << From: <dtaft@cowtown.net> Subject: RE: [WIGRANT] Grant Co. Civil War Pension Index: Benjamin F. Tilley, Co. I, B & K, 19th Wisconsin Infantry Filed for pension 8 Apr 1882 from Iowa, Application No. 445582 Widow, Jane E., filed for widow's pension 1 Aug 1924, from Indiana, Application No. 1223916 If you haven't ever requested his Civil War pension file, it might be worth the money. Even though he filed early (1884) it should contain information about his children up to that year. Also, since Benjamin appears to have died in 1924 and his widow filed then, it could have a great deal more. Information on ordering Benjamin's pension file can be found at: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/index.html Go to Veterans Service Records and then request a copy of NATF Form 85. Include the File numbers above to shorten the time to wait for the file. The cost is $14.75 or $37 depending on what you request. For $14.75 you should get most genealogical data from the file, but the $37 can be a bargain if it's a large file. Civil War Service Record: Benjamin F Tilley Residence: Muscoda, Wisconsin Promoted to Full Corporal Enlisted as a Private on 22 January 1862 Enlisted in Company K, 19th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 22 January 1862. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lEC.2ACE/464.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Mark, notice that the SSDI information I sent for GORDON SMITH (SSN 572-42-4582 issued in CA before 1951) gives his residence at death as Platteville. Perhaps you could contact the SW Wisconsin Room at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (swwis@uwplatt.edu) and request that they look up an obituary for a Gordon Smith who died in February 1986. (Their fees are very reasonable.) An obit probably would indicate parents names and branch of military service, if any. If Gordon and Ada lived together at the time your father was born, perhaps they were listed in a telephone or city directory from 1942; you might request this lookup as well from UW-Platteville. Your original post indicated that your grandfather died in California: 1. California death records show only one Gordon Smith born in Wisconsin and died in California; his middle initial was "A" and he was born in 1899, so doesn't fit into the profile. 2. California death records show three Gordon L. Smiths; the birth dates are 1896 (born NE), 1927 (born OK) and 1952 (born California), so these don't seem to fit, either. 3. California death records show well over 100 Gordon Smiths. Below are those with no middle initial whose birth year roughly fits into the profile you've established. (The first place listed is place of birth, and the second is place of death. The first date listed is date of birth, the second is date of death). One of the heads of household is LOUIS; I'd be inclined to look closely at this family simply because your grandfather's middle name is the same. Nora, wife, age 34, born WI, parents born WI No children are listed for this family in 1920. Louis and Nora live next door to another Smith couple, Willard and Hattie?, whose ages and birth places suggest that may be Louis's parents.

    2. David W. Taft
    3. Catherine, Yes, these all appear to be in Patch Grove township. They do appear to be in the very south part of the township bordering on Bloomington Twp. SESW 11/ 6-N 5-W W1/2 14/ 6-N 5-W NENW 14/ 6-N 5-W SENE 15/ 5-N 5-W 200 ACRES "SESW 11" would mean the Southeastern, Southwestern 1/4 (I think) of Section 11. Patch Grove is kind of an odd shape. Most townships are basically square and contain whole sections. Patch Grove shares 1/2 of sections 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 (numbered West to East) with Bloomington. Section 11 is all in Patch Grove. For those unfamiliar with legal descriptions and land records, the following link provides a pretty good explanation: http://www.outfitters.com/genealogy/land/twprangemap.html Unlike the graphical example at this web site, Patch Grove begins with Sections 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 at the northern boarder and half of sections 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 to the south. Hope I didn't loose anyone here. It is a bit confusing. Dave Taft
