I was told a while back that there is a story about an ENDICOTT family written up in the Potosi Pioneers Book. I would like to get a copy of this story. Lucinda was first married to Thomas Daniels and had two daughters. Louisa Daniels married William Booth in Grant County, abt 1861 and Mary married a J Godfrey but don't know where. William and Louisa Booth are buried in WA state. I don't know where Mary went.. James Endicott ended up in Kansas City, Kansas and died there in 1876 according to Lucinda's obit. She died in 1904 in Elma, WA state.. James and Lucinda had a son James M Endicott who died in Elma, as well. Have his obit too. But James the dad never seemed to be in the census' with his family. Lucinda was with brother Alphus Currant in 1850 and 1860. I thank you for any help you can send my... Cathy CLar780335@aol.com

She sent me a picture of her father and Gordon Smith- and this guys is a spitting image of my dad! I mean, no question! So it appears that it is a great possibility that the Louis Smith family on Chestnut could be the family, provided they are relatively close to the Cummins family on Cedar!!! Thank you both so much for the help...you have hopefully solved a mystery!

Her father was Fountain Taylor from Virginia. (Sarah) Elizabeth Taylor married William Henry Winney who remarried Mary L. Hickock in the 1870's by whom he born 2 sons, "Willie" Winney and L.B. Winney, in Wisconsin. This family was to move to Osceola Co., Iowa in the 1880's. The daughter that W.H. Winney had by Elizabeth Taylor Winney married George Albert Spencer in 1880. This daughter was called Anna Elizabeth Winney, b. 1869-1871 and was my GGrandmother. I understand that Anna Elizabeth Winney Spencer was "part-Indian" but I don't know "which part." I only asked because I noticed that you don't have a post about this family at the Lafayette County boards. What is the source for your spelling of "Ulphick?" There are absolutely no responses to the surname at ancestry.com, familysearch.com, genealogy.com, or even using search engines such as Google and Hotbot. This is **very** unusual. Is there some other possible spelling? I wonder whether Sally/Polly Hamilton is Emeline's mother? Perhaps you can get at a "better" spelling of Robert's last name by looking for a marriage record for Emeline Hamilton.

He grew up in Platteville. I am in the process of looking for a place for us to live together so I can take care of him. For the past week or so, I've been going through his piles of stuff, separating the good stuff from the trash. Just today, we came upon a box with old phones in it. Lying on top of the phones was an old picture of my Dad and one of his buddies. My Dad was born in 1923 and they looked to be 16 or 17 in the picture. "Who's this, Dad?" "Oh, that's my friend Gordon." "Gordon who, Dad?" "Gordon Smith." And then I open up my email to see your post. I don't know if my Dad will have anything more on Gordon or not, but I will certainly ask him. At the very least, I can send you a copy of the photo. It will be awhile, however: I'm away from home and my scanner ... Susan Cummins

I think Kathleen's response may be close to the answer. Some Lutheran and other Protestant families, both German and Scandinavian did keep the Saint's name traditions. Mary may have hit on a hidden clue, if you're sure these names refer to the same person. Maybe your ancestor chose a more American-sounding name of his own accord (John Bernard / Johann Bernhard - completely unrelated to Ludwid Karl / Louis Charles). Often folks were baptized with a spiritual name (Saint's name or name day) and given another name (call name: favorite Saint, parent, etc.), then used a totally different name in life. Often the entire family of same gender siblings would appear to have the exact same first name because of these old practices. These pages give good explanation of this: http://www.kerchner.com/germname.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~footprintsfromthepast/naming_customs_ and_traditions.htm (both in context of PA German tradition, but generally applicable) A distant cousin's wife has some help: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hornbeck/naming2.htm It's been some years since I focused much attention to German research, but the German Rootsweb lists could be a good place to post this Q, or do a search of a German list archive, where many discussions on the topic can be found. Just from my own experience, the Baden-Wurttemberg list has some wonderfully knowledgeable folk who are willing to help. The German FAQ site: http://www.genealogienetz.de/faqs/sgg.html The Germany GenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/ and other resource sites are full of links that might be too much to decide where to click in fear of ending up in a web of clicks and spending far too much time searching, but sometimes some real gems are found that way... Robert Shea's German resource links is a great site to surf. http://www.serve.com/shea/work.htm This is a fun site, where you can enter a German or other (6 languages) name or title and translate it to it's equivalent. http://www8.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/html/wwp/engl/entr/trans.html Glückliche Jagd!
