    2. Bonnie Eckert
    3. Classification: Query Surname: Murphy I'm just beginning my search for my great grandfather, John or John Paul Murphy. He lived at least for a time in Grant County, born about 1864. Can anyone help me locate any information about him in the census records, or how do I go about doing this? He also may have lived for a time in Lafayette County, the Vinegar Hill area. Is there a genealogical society in that County? I have sent the check and request for cemetery records. Thanks for any help at all. LaVonne (Murphy) Eckert Oconomowoc, Wisconsin

Ladies, Pardon my intrusion, but if one of you come across a marriage or sibling combination of a Mary and Merwin HOS or HOSS (could be spelled like your HAAS) if siblings, and if married, then Mary, elder sister to Ida GIBSON. They would have been coming of age around the turn of the century. 1900. I've a photo including Mary & Merwin, but am still not sure if they are a married couple (most likely) or siblings. 3. In going over my information about my GGGreat-grandfather, Ludwig Carl JULIUS, I find that his mother, my GGGGreat-grandmother was buried in lot in Liberty which was later sold to the BRIHL family. There was no marker. I have no idea what her first name or maiden name was or when she died. I know that she was born in Germany, probably in Darmstadt as that is where Ludwig came from. Is it possible that there are records in Liberty or somewhere that would give me an idea where to look? Not knowing where they sailed from; the port they left by; the ship they came on; where they landed or the date of when they arrived. Again, my records only state that they came to this country in about 1850 and that they first settled in LIberty Township and later moved to Stitzer. I also know that they attended St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Liberty. I would appreciate any help that I can get. Beverly Miller, Rapid City, SD

My GGGGrandparents appear to be Jonathon Taylor and his wife Mary Ann. Their only child that I know of was my GGGrandmother, (Sarah) Elizabeth Taylor, b. in WI ca. 1852-53. (I just don't know any of the names of her siblings.) (Sarah) Elizabeth Taylor married William Henry Winney of Grant Co., WI ca. 1869. They had two daughters, Anna Elizabeth Winney, b. 1869-1871 and Cora who might have died before 1901 for she did not appear in her father's will which was written out then; Anna E. did appear in her father's will, as did William Henry Winney's second wife, Mary L. Hickock and his two sons by her. W.H. Winney was married to Mary L. by the Census of 1880. By 1885, the family was in Osceola County, Iowa where they remained. Anna Elizabeth Winney married George Albert Spencer in Sibley, Osceola Co., Iowa in 1888. (These are my GGrandparents.) The Spencers also had come from Wisconsin to Iowa, by wagon train with the Perrys, also my family. Thanks for any information about any of these families. Kathleen LPurch6636@aol.com

    1. Re: [WIGRANT] Fountain Taylor: 1860 Census, Grant County
    2. Dave, You've just given me a huge break-thru! Thank you! In the Census Records, with all the "William Winney's," half the time they would include a middle initial, half the time they wouldn't and at least one time they used the middle name for the man's first name! Anything I had read about William J. Winney in a couple Census records had not given me any assurance that he was "mine." So I will look more closely at him now... Just getting me to the parents of Sara Elizabeth is a tremendous break-thru... And I have already sent in my $3.00 for all the Winneys of Grant County. I'm looking forward to that information too! I was thrilled to receive the newspaper wedding announcement which I will send for. I am so very grateful... Kathleen > Per the Grant Co. WI marriage records: > > William H. 2. David W. Taft
    3. Kathleen, If Elizabeth (Taylor) Winney was born in Wisconsin before 1876, there won't be a birth certificate. Depending on when she died, there may not be a death certificate either. Before 1907, all vital records are basically hit and miss. Marriages seem to be the most complete. Per the Grant Co. WI marriage records: William H. Winney married Sarah Elizabeth Taylor, 25 Feb 1869, recorded in Grant Co. Book 4, Page 194. William is recorded as the son of William J. and Ann Eliza (Unknown) Winney. Sarah Elizabeth as the daughter of Jonathan and Mary Ann (Unknown) Taylor. This record is available for $7 from the Grant Co. Courthouse in Lancaster. As you can see, "Sarah Elizabeth" is the name on her marriage certificate. But her father looks to be Jonathan. However, there are known to be many errors even in vital records. For Jonathan, he has me stumped. I can't locate him in 1860 Grant Co. Wisconsin, nor in 1870. Per "Memorable Happenings in the Grant Co. Herald, 1943-1869," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: E. Taylor married William H. Winney, 2? Feb 1869, Patch Grove Twp., recorded in the 2 Mar 1869 issue of the Herald. I've looked though my resources, but can't seem to find anything more on these two. 1. Re: [WIGRANT] Fountain Taylor: 1860 Census, Grant County
    2. Dear Dave, *Thank you* so much. This morning I heard from a Fontain Taylor family member who showed me that my Elizabeth Taylor was not *her* (Sarah) Elizabeth Taylor. She also told me that it would be a good idea to get my Elizabeth Taylor Winney's birth certificate--but I have had nothing but grief in trying to obtain Vital Records from the state of Wisconsin! Is there a secret?! My Elizabeth Taylor (I am eliminating the "Sarah" for now as I've gotten some wrong information and went down that long, lonely trail.) What *I* have *on paper* is my GGrandmother Anna Elizabeth Winney being the daughter of William Henry Winney and Elizabeth Taylor; Anna Elizabeth's father appearing remarried to Mary L. Hickock in the Census of 1880 and verification of that remarriage and the identity of Anna Elizabeth in William Henry Winney's will. These are the things that I know...with verification.) If you are not yet sick of me, I would love to hear what your ideas are. (I am not a member of ancestry.com and I can only get to the LDS FHC about once a year as I have to rely on others for transportation.) Many, many thanks for your gracious help. Kathleen
