Sometimes the person supplying the information is a spouse, child, or even an in-law. I have a death certificate of my ancestor, and the information on it--other than date and place of death--was supplied by the daughter-in-law. I suppose they picked her because the wife was grieving, son was with her, and the daughter-in-law was the next best thing. They could have made a better choice. She got the place of birth wrong (it was his childhood home, not the actual place he was born, because the family moved when he was 5), she got the father wrong (name listed was the father's middle name that he went by), and the mother's maiden name was wrong. The mother married twice, and the name listed was not her birth name, but the name of the first husband that died in the war...which was what she married #2 under. I'm sure she tried her best, but even "official" documents have incorrect information. Regards, Diane Wolford (Researching Michael and Robert Schenk/Schenck of Ellenboro and Mineral Point)

From the index to Death Records of Grant County, Wisconsin, by Kathleen Henderson, there is an entry for a Mrs. CHASE, who died 23 Feb 1892. It is recorded in Vol 2, page 260 of Grant County Death Records. Unfortunately there is no first name of either the husband nor the deceased wife. Also no age is given. Your best shot at finding out if this was indeed Emaline PAFFORD may be to correspond with Helen Jentz of the Grant County Genealogical Society for CHASE cemetery records in Grant County. For $3.00 they will send copies of all their card entries for the CHASE surname within all the cemeteries of Grant County. This may also give you a better clue as to where they resided in Grant County. One more thing, in your message requesting a divorce record you mentioned date of marriage of 1896 when in fact it was 1886, just want to make sure that we keep dates correct.

My grandfather Leroy told my mom he had brothers Seymore , Albert or Alfred, and little sister Mabel who all was adopted out or given away. Said his father Aaron took the children somewhere and they never came back. It really hurt him I guess when this happened. And as for our Clarence have no idea as yet where he was. Mom also said Leroy never was in military that she can recall or never went. As for marriage license it was sent by look up from Iowa. Mom says she thinks Clarence's name might have been metioned but did not know who he was. Thanks for encouraging me a bit more on SSI. It is a lot of money to spend not knowing who my grandfather Leroy's real mother is. My great grandfather Aron was probably married to both women. I think that Mary must have been step mother to my grandfather Leroy and the Emaline was probably Aarons first wife and biological mother to my grandfather. I will try in Rock as you have suggested. My mom says that she believes the familys religion might have been protestant but they really did not practice any faith through a particular church. Thanks Diana

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lEC.2ACE/1015.4 Message Board Post: Diana, I just took a look at the 1910 census you mentioned. I see that both Aaron and Mary indicate this is their second marriage. Note that Mary has borne 3 children and all 3 are living as of the census enumeration. Because Leroy and Clarence are referred to as "sons" (rather than stepsons) in the census, it appears that is that they are Aaron's children from his marriage to Emeline PAFFORD. However, Aaron may have adopted them, and they may in fact have been Mary's children from her first marriage, so Aaron might not be their biological father. One thing that is bugging me is that I can't find either Clarence or Leroy in the WWI draft cards database. I see Leroy and Bertha in Muscatine in 1920. Do you know where Clarence was? One other idea: you say that Leroy's mother's name is illegible on the marriage license; I assume this is the legal document issued by the county or state. Does the record indicate who married them? If it was a clergyman, there may be a church record of the marriage; that document might be more legible than the civil document.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lEC.2ACE/1015.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Diana, the fee for the SS5 is a bit hefty, but if that's not a consideration, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. Within a matter of a few weeks you will know who Leroy considered to be his parents and where he believed that he was born. Do you know what became of Leroy's brother Clarence? If it were my own research, I would also get his SS5 to see if parents match up. There's no reason to assume poor handwriting--in fact, the document might be typed. Since there doesn't seem to be a birth record for Leroy in Grant County, you might check adjacent Rock County (that's where Milton Junction is). Just do a google search for the courthouse and call or write to arrange for a birth lookup. You might also contact the Grant County courthouse and inquire about how they have their divorce records indexed. If the Emeline CHASE who is in Beetown in 1900 is Aaron's first wife, there may be divorce records in Grant County. Do you happen to know what religion the family practiced? Once you more or less determine where Aaron and Emeline were circa 1889 (and ditto for Mary PATRI*), it might be worth some inquiries to churches to see if there are baptismal records for Leroy and Clarence, and maybe marriage records for Leroy and Emeline &/or Leroy and Mary.
