This is a piece of an article I found just now *quoting:http://www.wi-doc.com/DOC_History.htm 1898 – *By close of the year, the WSR houses 24 inmates young inmates sent from Waupun. The Reformatory is intended to house inmates 17-30 years old. Its purpose is to rehabilitate young men through the teaching of trades, general education, and steady work. Warden John I. Roberts of Waupun introduces a system of grading prisoners, dividing all inmates into three security grades with more privileges for good behavior. This was the purpose of the WI State Reformatory. So I guess now I know what my great uncle Vandy was doing while he was there at that time.
For anybody new who hasnt' seen the page where can be found my great uncle, Vandy Dvorak, at the Wisconsin State Reformatory in 1900, here's the link. Maybe others can find their family here too. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~orphanshome/censusrooms/uscensus/wisconsin/1900/wistatereform00.htm
Looking for census records possibly mentioning Vandy Dvorak again after year 1900. Trying to see if he was in Wisconsin State Reformatory, Brown County, past this year. Would like to know if he was in there in 1910, 1920, ......Am sure was not in 1930 because that's when he died, unless he was there all the way up to the year 1930.. I have only seen him in the 1900 census at age 19 Would be respectively 29, and 39 on the 1910 and 1920 census
Hi, Ron. My family lived in Kendalltown once upon a time too. It's now a little teeny town called Truman. It's outside Belmont WI. Greetings, My Great Uncle Frederick KUEHNN (KUHNHENN) purchased a farm in Kendalltown. Can't find it on MapQuest. It may have been changed to something else. Most of the family was in Grant County. Couldn't find him in the 1860 census. Ron HABEL Vista, CA
THanks I've had the photo for some time, my cousin took it for me when he visited the Dvorak gravesites, and I didn't realize that they were the only other people in the same cemetery with the very same parents as were my great grandparents, Wencil and Mary, even though their Czech names were still Vencl and Marie at the time. I guess as they became more anglicized, they changed the spellign of their first names. BUt basically the last name stayed the same "DVORAK"........ Dawn D. Ok people. I have come to a momentous decision in my life. Being that my great grandparents were Wencil and Mary DVORAK, and that there was so much space between their sons Vandy and Joseph (7 years) I have to say that most LIKELY, the gravestone of Josef and Amalia DVORAK is MY FAMILY. I have looked over the indexed photos of all photographed gravestones at the St John Baptist Cemetery in Muscoda, and have not found any other Wencil and Mary DVORAK but MY OWN! So This HAS to be my great aunt and uncle, who died at the incredibly young ages that they did, of I believe 5 and 7 (if my memory doesnt escape me), and so I believe that nobody else needs to claim these children as their own family. I am thusly and thenly proud to say that before the year ends, I am now the proud grand nephew of Josef and Amalia DVORAK! IT so appears that these two children were the very first children of my great grandparents born on the mainland of the United States after they settled in Wisconsin. There are pictures of two identical sailing vessels on the gravestone itself, right above the names Josef and Amalia, which leads me to believe this fact, that the children were born after my great grandparents came to this country in 1881 on the ship SS Frisia! Thus I would like to add two more members of my family born in Wisconsin!
According to the dates, it looks like we missed each other by 6 years. Same ship, though. "john.dvorak" <[email protected]> wrote: thats' very awesome. so we were on the same ship together? Mary: I have looked in the censuses and found that Emaline was living with a different family in 1850. I also found the two articles that you found from the Alton Illinois newspapers. The second, dated May 19, 1853, shows it is a legal notice, but I can not tie that into Emaline being the daughter of Ambrose Hooser and the Ambrose Hooser that is listed, I can not find him after the 1850 census. I did find Phoebe Hooser living in Platteville in 1870 with her son Henry - with the same birth year and birth state (North Carolina). **************************************** Dawn D. Emaline HOOSER of Edwardsville, Madison, IL in 1850 is living in the household of Charles CROCKER--no HOOSER parents to be found. A reference to Ambrose HOOSER's death appeared in Alton Telegraph And Democratic Review (Alton, Illinois) > 1847 > August > 6: GUARDIAN'S NOTICE-- Notice is hereby given, that I shall apply at the next term of the Madison county Circuit Court, to be holden on the third Monday in the month of August next, by petition, for the order and decree of said court, to sell the reasl estate of Ambrose HOOSER, late of Madison county, deceased, for the maintenance and support of the infant heirs of said HOOSER; when and where all persons interested in the said estate may appear and show cause, if any they have, why said real estate should not be sold for such purpose. PHOEBE HOOSER Guardian of the heirs, &c. July 30, 1817-31-31 The Daily Alton Telegraph, The (Alton, Illinois) > 1853 > May > 19 (Madison County) contains a legal notice that begins as follows: "Caroline HOOSER, Ambrose HOOSER, Elizabeth HOOSER, Amy A. HOOSER, Emeline HOOSER & Thomas HOOSER, by their guardian John WEAVER; vs. Mary A. HOLMAN and Nathaniel HOLMAN, her husband, Delilah MOORE, widow, and the unknown heirs of William MOORE, deceased, Catharine TEAS[?], Lucinda HOOSER and Jane HOOSER." The rest of it is barely readable. "Dawn D. West" <[email protected]> wrote: Hello all! :) I have been working on my husband's line and found that he has a tie into the Hooser line. I have been trying to see if Emeline Hooser, born in Madison County, Illinois and married Calvin West, was the daughter of Ambrose Hooser? There is a Pheby (Phoebe Hooser) that keeps jumping around from Madison County, Illinois and Grant County, Illinois. I did see that Jacob Hooser did have a son named Ambrose, who died farming in Platteville (this information was found on the Rootsweb Grant County website (Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Rock, Green, Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Wisconsin - 1901).
