Melodie, though I'm not very knowledgeable about the various geographic areas in Grant County, I am fairly certain that the term "Hardscrabble" was associated with a mine (or "diggings"), among other things in Grant County. I'm not familiar with "Old Cass Hollow," but imagine it might be near Cassville. If you're interested in this sort of geographical and historical background, you might want to contact the SW Wisconsin ROom at Karrmann Library (UW-Platteville). There is information about the Hardscrabble Diggings and Hardscrabble Branch in Holford's 1900 History of Grant County, and probably in Butterfield's history, as well. Also note that a google search on "Hardscrabble School" shows that this name was used in other states, as well; I noted one in Iowa and one in Montana. Good luck, Melodie.

My Pittullo family notes say that James and his sons built a school there or near there sometime in the early to mid 1800's they nick named it the "Hard Scabble School" because it was so hard to build. I'm also trying to find information on the cementery, but records indicate that the cementery was dug up. Does anyone know where the graves were moved to or if there are any pictures. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've noticed that this has been posted to some email lists already (so please excuse any duplication), but thought I would send out some more information. The Wisconsin Historical Society has just made available an index to Wisconsin pre-1907 births at www.wisconsinhistory.org/vitalrecords. It was made by digitizing the 1970's microfiche index (with which some of you're probably familiar) and then expanding it with tens of thousands of delayed births. The Schoenleber Foundation of Milwaukee generously covered most of the conversion costs, and the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society graciously let us include their delayed birth records index. The result is free public access to more than 1,000,000 Wisconsin births. As you'll see, you can search in a variety of ways. When you find someone for whom you want a birth certificate, you can order hard copy from us online or use the results to locate the film yourself. We plan to add pre-1907 death and marriage indexes in the next few months, creating a comprehensive vital records index that will be entirely free and publicly searchable. Until the death and marriage indexes are available, you can request searches through our Wisconsin Genealogical Research Service at www.wisconsinhistory.org/genealogy/ogrs. Let us know how you like the index and happy searching! Melissa McLimans Administrator, Wisconsin Genealogical Research Service Wisconsin Historical Society
ME TOO! Thing is, My grandpa would have been the only one in that index and he wasnt' there. His bday was sept 28, 1893. and I could not find him. Anybody know if Muscoda was in a different country from what it is now, back in 1893? His SSDI record says he was born Muscoda, Grant County, Wis, on Sept 28, 1893.........so I think he's either not there, or listed in a different county --- Scott and Roxanne Munns <[email protected]> wrote: > Came right up for me! > > Roxanne > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > > Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2006 2:26 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [WIGRANT] New Online Birth Index > > > I got a 404 Error File Not Found > > www.wisconsinhistory.org/vitalrecords. > > > > > > > ==== WIGRANT Mailing List ==== > If you have any questions or concerns, > please e-mail me > Mari, WIGRANT List Admin at > [email protected] > *--*--*--*--*--*--*Happy > Hunting!!*--*--*--*--*--*--* > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. Yes, I have that info already. Thanks Not my family though. The only Dvoraks I have from the old country are Wencil and Mary and two of their 4 sons, Frank and Vandy......I don't have any idea who else might be related to this family from Europe --- [email protected] wrote: > John, > Did you see the mention of Wisconsin Dvorak's in the > latest issue of Rootsweb > review? Mary, Many of the people from Morgan County, Kentucky moved to Grant County, WI, This may not be your person, but, there was a Catherine Smith, wife of Edmund, who lived in Morgan County. Just maybe she is the lady you are researching. dcv
William Dvorak, my grandfather, was married in 1926, and it says here in the Muscoda Newspaper index, that there is a newspaper for that date of 18 Feb, 1926, page one. I was wondering if anybody could locate that for me at the U of Plattville, Karrmann Library. Thanks! > >

I wrong .......dates I posted are dates for Newspaper articles of birth dates of my uncles. NOT the birthdates themselves.....sorry folks
BOTH Wm Dvorak AND James Norman DVORAK are my uncles, I hope someone could look in the historical newspapers for me to see if they can find the birth announcements from 1928 and 1930 respectively Thank you kindly!
I THINK this is my uncle Bill. Grandpa became a father of William Dvorak who was born on Feb 16, 1928, I was wondering if someone could locate in the Muscoda papers, the birth announcement! This would be awesome! THank you! John D in Michigan

Anything you can find would be great I just found a website that listed James Senior and Nathaniel as buying property in 1858/06/01 but it doesn't say where. James Senior wifes name was Mary Samuels, but I can only assume she died in Scotland before the family moved to the States his second wife was Ann Drysdale nothing on her so I don't know if she was in Grant co. with the family or not. Again thank you for assistance.

Melodie, WHEN did they live in Grant County? Have you located the family in any censuses? Is this the sort of information you're looking for? Do you already know James's wife's name? You didn't mention that in your post. Do you already have the family members' birth/marriage/death dates and burial locations? Do you have obituaries? Is this information that you'd like to have? Are you curious about what happened to the children, or are you looking for ancestral information for James PITTULO &/or his wife?
