Hi, Virginia. The 1855 WI state census images aren't available online. Do you already have the 1850 census data for Willis in District 24, Grant, WI? [email protected] wrote: Looking for info on Willis Underwood family in Grant County WI census of 1855. Ancestry.com states he is in the census index on page 001. Is it possible to get to that index so that I can see it on the internet? Willis was born about 1796 possibly VA, and d. Feb 1872 in MO. He married on 29 Nov 1823 to Margaret "Peggy" Underwood who was a first cousin of his. Parents of Willis were James and Sarah Thmpson Underwood, and parents of Margaraet were Reuben and Sarah McCarty Underwood. James and Reuben were brothers, children of George and Mildred Rucker Underwood of VA I have 14 children for Willis and Margaret but not sure how many were surviving in 1855. I appreciate all responses to my posts. But, when someone answers my questions with other unrelated questions, it will look like my question has been really been answered if the new post is not opened and read by everyone who comes to one of these boards. That can lead to questions being left unanswered. Again, thanks to the person who took time to answer my question and actually sent me the page of the plat book that had my ancestors listed. That was a big help.
To all my friends I want to extend each and every one a most happy and blessed Easter! Thank you for being there when I needed you! Sincerely and with all good wishes for this year, John Dvorak Michigan

There was an 1868 plat map for Grant County Wisconsin. If he farmed it is likely his name would be listed on the Boscobel page of the plat book. I have copies of some of the 1868 but not Boscobel. I got my copies from Helen Jentz of the Grant County Genealogical Society. I believe her address is 955 Williams St. Platteville WI 53818. 2. A number of years ago the Southwest Wisconsin Area Research Center at the Wisconsin Room of The UW-Platteville's Karrmann Library microfilmed many church records from Grant and surrounding counties. This was a voluntary project so not every church participated. You may want to write to the Wisconsin Room, Karrmann Library, UW-Platteville, Platteville, WI 53818 and enquire if the church records you seek happened to have been microfilmed.

He spent the first winter at mining; then rented a farm for five years; began $500 in debt, and at the end of two years began the butchering business, which he carried on together with his farming until the expiration of the lease. Mr. Chapman is a veteran butcher of Grant Co., he having followed the business steadily from 1841 to 1874. John Watkinson was his first partner. In 1853, he formed a partnership with J. F. Kirkpatrick, which partnership he continued up to the retirement of both from business. Mr. Chapman is the owner of several farms---one of 340, and one of 140 acres in Platteville, 80 in Smelser, 160 in La Fayette Co., 160 in Iowa Co., 240 in Kossuth and Wright Counties, Iowa, and a farm of 140 acres, part in Platteville and part in Harrison. He married Sarah Kay, who died leaving four children---Robert, Elizabeth A., Mary J., and Sarah M., the later died in 1880. The second wife, nee Elizabeth Richards, died also, leaving four children---Sarah M., John, William, and Nora. All the children were born in Platteville. The present Mrs. Chapman was Mrs. Fannie S., widow of John Bonson, one of the pioneer settlers of Platteville. Mr. Chapman served one year as Assessor of this town; Treasurer two years, and Supervisor six years. He is a member of the Primitive Methodist Church, and is a Freemason. His home is now outside the city limits of Platteville, where he has 13 acres, in addition to the hundreds mentioned above. ==== WIGRANT Mailing List ==== Please remember to respect the copyright laws.
