I'm glad the topic of 'charging' has come up. I've just gone through a 'hellish' weekend of fighting on one of my lists. Not because I charge for lookups, but because it has become known that someone else has been scanning the mail list and query boards and then contacting those people, getting them all excited about the possibility of "finally getting the information they are seeking" and then charging them $8.00 an hour for the minimal amount of information possible. I mean, if I 'm going to go to a courthouse and bother to look up a record, I'm gonna glean the information off that record for the other person so they don't "have" to order it if they don't want to, instead of just giving them the volume and page numbers -- geez Louise! Anyway, my point is, is there a way to stop this kind of activity? As for us CC's giving out our phone numbers and addresses, I don't have a problem with that at all. On the other hand, I'd like to have the SC's information too, in case something comes up where I could get in touch with her! Great discussions! -- Nance mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net Shari Milks wrote: > The practice I've mentioned isn't just endemic to Wisconsin sites, it's something that's going on in all the states. My lookup volunteer needed a name of a cemetery and the name of the newpaper in an Arkansas county for her own personal research and the cc there wanted $10.00 to supply her with that information. What's wrong with this picture from an organization dedicated to free genealogy information on the internet. > Shari Milks, cc Manitowoc county > > ==== WIGEN Mailing List ==== > Celebrate Wisconsin! > Visit the La Crosse County WIGenWeb Project Pages > http://www.rootsweb.com/~wilacros/
