    3. Hi, I am getting scanned photos from a great lady for the Oconto County site, but I have an IBM compatable computer, and she has a Mac. I can't open the attachment - I use Netscape, can't save it to disc or hard drive. I use Soap (program) for photographs and it will take Mac and .sit, but how do I get it to the Soap? Her last attempt said: Rita: I scanned it in photoshop and saved it as a tiff in IBM PC format, forgot I could do the IBM thing with my mac, latest thing, that was why I got it! If it is a .sit when you get it, I am using Drop Stuff and Stuffit Expander should expand it for you. Hope this works! Kathy page 3 pecor.SIT Name: page 3 pecor.SIT Type: Macintosh BinHex Archive (application/mac-binhex40)

    3. Rita, Ask her to save (& transmit) the photos as .gif or .jpg (JPEG to a Mac). These are the only formats that *actually* will work between platforms. Photoshop has the ability to create these formats. Tell her *not* to compress them with Stuffit or any other compression programs. They aren't (reliably) compatible between platforms. I know -- my Dad & 1 brother have a Macs. We tried everything. I have a great graphics program (PaintShop Pro) with one of the best conversion programs going, and it can't deal (reliably) with anything other than these formats, from a Mac. The key word here is "reliably." Yes, there are programs that claim to allow PCs to un-Stuffit (and Macs to un-Zip) -- but they don't seem to work well on every PC, operating system, video card, graphics accelerator, resolution, etc. Yes, TIFF-in-IBM format *should* work on an IBM-compatible, but often doesn't, depending on (see previous list). Best to keep it simple. Stick to .txt files, .gif & .jpg graphics, & everything uncompressed.
