    1. Re: [WIGEN-L] Answer to Question About County Sites
    2. I'm a little confused about who is answering questions here. Is R.M. Stevens <[email protected]> the same person as Marie Mickalunas <[email protected]> ? Thanks, Linda -----Original Message----- From: "R.M. Stevens" <[email protected]> Sent: Oct 12, 2003 9:35 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [WIGEN-L] Answer to Question About County Sites This is a question asked by Anne. 4) Being a VERY independent person, I like the CC's ability to control their own project sites with minimum rules/supervision -- standard logo, links to US GenWeb, etc. are acceptable ... What minimum will you suggest that each site will be required to have or not have? We have requirements set forth by both the US GenWeb project and the WI GenWeb project. I believe these are: * All web sites shall include prominent display of The USGenWeb Project logo on the home page. * Every page must have a pointer to the Wisconsin State Page. * Every county must provide a query page. * Every page must provide some kind of resource information for county. * The WIGenWeb Project has designated a color series of logos or banners to identify the WIGenWeb Project. The design is mandatory on the main page of each WI County belonging to WIGenWeb * Listings of research materials and/or services which may be for sale/hire shall not be on the main web page for the site * Perform periodic reviews of local-level project web sites to ensure compliance with The USGenWeb Project/XXGenWeb Project established guidelines/standards. * Removal of any links to web sites which fail to meet The USGenWeb Project/XXGenWeb Project established guidelines/standards. One of the first things we should do would be to review these requirements, and make sure we understand what they are saying. We should verify we want to continue with all existing WI GenWeb project requirements, or we should make changes where necessary. I'd like to try to get us going (as a state) on getting these things established ASAP. I want to state it would be the County Coordinators who would decide what would be required of all WI GenWeb sites; it wouldn't be me. I'd be there to make sure things agreed upon by the CCs were actually done. I would like to see simple modifications to make our web sites user-friendly to all researchers, including people with disabilities, as an increasingly large percentage of our researchers are homebound or elderly. Our sites shouldn't be so high-tech that people with older machines and browsers can't view them correctly. Conversely, our sites shouldn't be so out-of-date that they are optimal for 14K connection speeds. We need to continuously improve our sites, always keeping the users of our sites in the forefront of whatever we do. Static sites are a thing of the past, and our users have the right to expect our sites will continue to grow as our project grows. I personally have a lot of ideas on what I'd like to see our Wisconsin sites look like. However, when it came time to vote (as we would), I would get only one vote. I don't see the SC position as a dictatorship. It won't work that way. However, we won't grow if we don't have leadership. I would like to lead people forward in a direction that helps us to produce a collection of sites we can all be proud of. -Marie ==== WIGEN Mailing List ==== Celebrate Wisconsin!
