Isn't there a "Minnekaunee" in Oconto County? Also a Menekaunee in Marinette County? Lori in Rock
There is a Menekanee in Marquette County, town of Peshitgo There was also a Menekaune in Oconto County before the Great Peshtigo Fire of Oct 8, 1871 (different place). It was a logging hub and had stores and mills in this time before there was much farming up there. Mostly it catered to the needs of the loggers when they came out of the woods, so it had plenty of "watering holes" then. Also, you will find that given as the home town of many Civil War recruits in 1861 and 1862. The Army recruiters would camp out in early Spring and sign the fellows up as they left the logging camps for summer work elsewhere. They told the fellow, who were hearty and tough, that with their help the war would be over by the next winter. The war went on from 1861 to 1865; not quite as promised. The northernmost edge of that part of the WI fire totally destroyed it and it was not rebuilt. That is now part of Marquette County since 1879 and it was a stones throw from the city of Marquette, which was not as severely damaged in that 1871 fire. Incidentally, the 1871 Great Fire also raged in Door County, WI and in Lower Michigan, as well as in Chicago, all starting exactly at the same time. Many theories have been laid as to why, but none completely answered why. The reason for the simultaneous sudden start of massive combustion is now explained by modern meteorologists and historians as being caused by meteor showers over the upper Great Lakes on that night of Oct. 8. That land was tinder dry from a serious and extensive drought. Meteors have fallen and cause small fires and damage in the same areas in years since.
