Thanks Tina! Yes, I did make quick work of it..... It's a great index. Looked for my BOUND and SPARKS kin in there - but, guess they never went to court. Funny thing is - there are quite a few WALKERS.... Now I would love to see those court cases as my 4th great grandfather T.H. Walker was the first Judge in Waushara Co. and am now wondering if his descendants were a bunch of scufflaws. LOL Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tina S. Dane County Madison, WI Forest Hills Cemetery Tombstone Photos This cemetery is very interesting. Many of the stones "..are the confederate soldiers that died at Camp Randall Prison during the civil war. Camp Randall was in Madison, Dane CO., WI., and is the current site of Camp Randall football stadium. Most if not all of the prisoners died of disease. They are buried in Forest Hill cemetery in a special section that was maintained by Alice WHITING WATERMAN who secured the markers and tended the graves until her death in 1897. She was buried with them upon her death." They represent soldiers from AL, AR, TN and MS. The online dictionary gives more than 2,000 brief lives of famous Wisconsin people (and many not-so-famous ones). It provides the exact location of every community and civil township in the state, and explains how every county and 800 cities and towns got their names. You can even display a map or satellite image of any city, town, or village with a single click. The dictionary includes mid-19th century descriptions of about 500 Wisconsin cities and towns from contemporary gazetteers and travel guides, too. You can imagine how this could help your genealogical research or just give you some interesting facts about Wisconsin history. We also encourage you to submit entries to help us grow the dictionary. The Society has also been busy adding 3,500 entries to the Wisconsin Name Index (www.wisconsinhistory.org/wni). For those of you unfamiliar with the name index, it was started about 1870, when WHS staff made a catalog card for every biographical sketch in each new Wisconsin county history. They made a similar card for every obituary added to the scrapbooks they called the "Wisconsin Necrology," and frequently added cards for magazine and newspaper articles about Wisconsin residents. After more than a century of such work, the data on the original cards was typed into a database that you can search online today. This time we have indexed Wisconsin World War Obituaries, a three volume scrapbook, containing newspaper articles and obituaries about the men and women of Wisconsin that served in the military during World War II. The index is available for you to find listings of your ancestors at your local library, through library loan or you can order copies from our Wisconsin Genealogical Research Service (www.wisconsinhistory.org/genealogy/ogrs). Please forgive the length of this post. I hope you have found it useful. Hi All, Continuing the idea of Sullivan in Jefferson County, I checked the book "Wisconsin: It's Territorial and Statehood Post Offices" by the Wisconsin Postal History Society and found these items about Sullivan WI: Sullivan 1: Post Office established Jan. 20, 1846 with Joshua W Osgood as postmaster. It was discontinued Feb. 6, 1883, with mail service from Oak Hill. Location unknown, other than its location was Jefferson Co. Sullivan 2: See Winfield. Winfield: Established Sept. 22, 1879, with Casper Braun as postmaster. The name was changed to Sullivan April 4, 1883 by Casper Braun. The office is still in service, zip code 53178. IN 1878 it was located in the NE 1/4 of Section 25, Town 6 North, Range 16 East in the Township of Sullivan and by 1899 it had been moved to the NE 1/4 of Section 3. The requester of the info may not be aware but in typing the Waushara, Green Lake and Marquette County biographies for the Marquette site, we are finding a number of errors in old county histories about locations, such as Centralia twp instead of the city of Centralia in Wood Co., etc. Joan Coordinator Adams Co.
