3. Mari, Please don't feel bad about anything, especially not for posting to the mailing list. You brought up a question, you did it nicely and explained what your concern was. I would have never thought about that before and I am sure I am not the only one who hadn't thought about the visually impaired before. I learned a few years ago that I have two sight impaired people from different areas who use both of my counties. I never thought about how my websites would be for anyone with any kind of visual problem. It was when they e-mailed me privately that I took the time to work with them to make them user friendly for everyone. The light finally went off. Mari, you didn't trigger anything, you asked a civil question to a mailing list that we can send our concerns and questions about the WIGenWeb project too. That's how I saw it, Don't feel bad and I hope this doesn't make you hesitate from posting to the list in the future, Debie Blindauer Calumet & Sheboygan Counties At 12:40 AM 1/28/2006, you wrote: >I agree with Debie. 3. I agree with Debie. PLEASE stop this fighting on the list. It's bad enough off list, but to carry it to the list is wrong. It does nothing but cause further grief and bickering. 3. Rita, You are way off base here. I never said shut-up, I asked for you to either run around your house ranting or to send it privately. I don't believe I was making an attack on anyone, nor was I being hurtful. I was politely asking to not send it to the state list. I can't and won't speak for everyone else on the list, but personally for me, this list has been truly 100% better since the nastiness stopped. Personally, I think Jan should have e-mailed Mari privately if she felt attacked. I still don't understand any of Jan's e-mails today at all. I have tried and tried to find a nastiness in Mari's e-mail to the list and in the end, all I found was a concern being brought to the list, something the list is for. I want to add one more thing, Jan may have looked for someone to protect her. I am not sure, but it didn't appear to me that anyone was running to protect her and by her private e-mails to you, it certainly didn't appear that she needed to be protected from anyone. You can check my last e-mail, I never said, nor did I intend to tell anyone to shut up, I was simply making a suggestion. I am not the person who can or can't tell you what to do, that would be either Tina or MAK. I would never be bold enough to step on their authority. I am done hashing this out, I am sorry if you misunderstood my letter, Debie Blindauer Calumet & Sheboygan Counties At 10:38 PM 1/27/2006, you wrote: >OK Debie, >If we are going to ask everyone to set limits, let's ask Jan to also do that. >As I said, it has been a very long time since I have said anything except to >encourage, inform and support others on this list. 3. Jan, You are dismissed as WIGenWeb Project CC. I have no clue what your thought process is, but for a very long time it has not been conducive to the good work of the WIGenWeb Project. As State Coordinator, I have a choice. The good work of many and the benefit to researchers vs. your overwhelming unhappiness in the work you do within the project. I choose the WIGenWeb Project. Jan, I wish you well, but I can not condone, nor will I let continue to let your unhappiness at whim to destroy WIGenWeb Project. I have delinked your counties, and with this note unsubscribed you from WIGEN-L. 3. I guess I must have missed some e-mails and now I can also say I guess I was wrong when I made the statement that we have stopped attacking each other. I should have and will only speak for myself from now on. I have stopped attacking people and will not do it again. I wish we could try very hard to be nice, if you don't get along with someone, hey, that's alright. We don't always like everyone we are around. However, I really wish that the nastiness would be kept to one self. I think that Jan simply misunderstood what Mari was saying, perhaps she did misread the letter and then felt bad. I am not sure, I am not Jan and don't want to assume anything on her part. However, the nastiness that showed up in my e-mail both now and earlier today, I believe was way to strong. Rita, if you don't like Jan, that's alright, I am not trying to say you have too. However, I wish you would at least be civil to the list. If you need to say something to Jan, please send it privately or just run around your house ranting about how she makes you feel, whichever you would prefer to do. As for the e-mail addresses and spam, have you tried the html for making the @ sign? Back some time ago, Ellen shared this information with me. All you have to do is change the @ symbol to @ When placing your mouse over it, the it shows as the @ symbol, but for the spam programs that harvest e-mails, it misses these because it looks for the @ symbol and it isn't there. It is real simple to use and real fast to change. I have been using it for all of my webpages since Ellen told me about it. 1. Encryption -- Testers wanted!
2. Tina S. Vickery
3. I have a compromise.. I have a link that encrypts email addresses individually [thanks to a SC of another state ... thank you SC of another state <g>]. The emails would have to done individually and basically replaces the email address with an encrypted code in place of the email address. Transparent to the visitor, and not java script. No one will know that it is encrypted. On a mouseover or click, it looks like an email address. Anyone want to test it out? Tina

3. Tina, I'm happy to help in any way I can. My main concern was the graphic.....JAWS can't read graphics. Doesn't know what to do with them. *I* can use them fine....at least so far have been able to. This you are suggesting apparently is just code? That works fine....I think. I mean, the newer JAWS and other programs the blind use are HTML friendly for the most part. I maybe could ask one of the gals on the blind list to test the thing? Mari At 04:59 PM 1/27/2006,Tina S. 2. Mari
3. Oh, No! I want to apologize to Jan, and the entire list.... I've taken too long to respond to this. Just now logged on for today....had a tooth pulled, so haven't bothered logging on till now. Jan, I in NO way meant this as a personal affront! Please, please don't take it personally! You are to be commended for trying to solve a problem all of us face....that of spam from having our addresses on the Internet! Debi is right. I was just trying to give another perspective, and no, I didn't see the second option! This has evolved into something that I never intended, nor would wish....for you or anyone. I'm sorry for your tears. Truly, I am. Again.....it was NOT meant as a personal affront! I had mentioned the blind list I'm on.....and that's where I learned that their programs they use (JAWS) for converting plain text into Braille for them to read, and thus was passing on the information. That's it. Apparently my wording has hit a nerve, and I DO apologize for that! Jan, I don't know what to do to convince you that I AM sorry, and wish you'd be able to see that I didn't intend to do anything but explain that what I was seeing wouldn't work for some. 3. Jan, I think you are taking this way to personally. I didn't get the impression that Mari was attacking you or telling you she didn't want to hear your ideas. She was bringing concerns about visually impaired people. Perhaps all it would have needed was to point out that it could be done either way. Mari did say she is sight impaired, perhaps she didn't see that it could be done two ways. Don't take this so much to heart, we have all stopped attacking each other, I hope you have a better day, Debie Blindauer Calumet & Sheboygan Counties At 12:59 PM 1/27/2006, you wrote: >My apologies Mari...... 3. Mari, If you will read the instructions - there are two ways of doing this - with and without typing letters into the box. THOSE LETTERS ARE NOT REQUIRED ON MIGENWEB EMAILS. I am truly sorry that you think so badly of me. Must be I have earned it. <sigh> I'll try not to make any more suggestions here. My apologies to everyone for sending the email. 3. Hi, Jan....... I was real excited about this till I saw what's done. If I understand correctly, a person has to enter the letters into the box before they are able to use the email address on the site? If so, then this isn't very user friendly to the low vision and blind people....one of which I am. I belong to a blind-knitters mailing list. Yes, blind-knitters! You'd be amazed at their expertise!! It's mind boggling. Problem is, when confronted with the jumbled letter verification technique, they are left out of it. Obviously they can't see the letters, and their software that they use to convert the web pages into Braille can't read it either. So, unless their spouse, or someone in the household is sighted, they aren't able to participate. I don't know how many blind genealogists there are "out there", but there are many, many seniors, who I'm sure don't see as well as they used to...including me. I've campaigned in IAGen to make the pages user friendly to all...including those with visual problems, I would hope that WIGen would follow the same road.....
