    3. P.S. This thread reminded me of a nice story. Many years ago, I did some lookup work and copying for a "from away" researcher. She found my name through my work with the USGenWeb Project and insisted on paying me. I declined, and thought that was the end of it. Weeks later, I received a gift certificate for a coffee and muffin from McDonald's .. what self-respecting person could refuse that? <VBG> .. 3. The message boards and mailing lists do not fall under the auspices of WIGenWeb Project. I posted the USGenWeb (and WIGenWeb) guidelines because I wasn't clear if Shelly as asking as a CC or as a list/board administrator. With the USGenWeb guidelines and the RW policy that Timm posted, my experience as taught me to be leery of allowing fund solicitation in the work we do. 3. From our Page Guidelines: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer.html [ Also covered in the USGenWeb Project bylaws - http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml ] 6. The USGenWeb Project by-laws, Article IX. Guidelines/Standards for Website/Members, Section 2, states: "Solicitation of funds for personal gain is inappropriate. This is defined as the direct appeal on the home page of any of the websites comprising The USGenWeb Project for funding to do research, to pay for server space, to do look-ups, etc. A website may, however, acknowledge any entities who may host their website (i.e., provide server space at no cost) or may include a link to a coordinator's personal page on which they offer research services for reimbursement. The acknowledgement may include a link to the hosting entity's website. A website may list research materials and/or services which may be for sale/hire, either by the coordinator, a genealogy society, or others. Such a listing shall not be on the main web page for the site, but may be linked from the main web page. It may be appropriate to include a disclaimer that the coordinator and The USGenWeb Project do not guarantee the contents of such research materials and/or the expertise of any professional researchers." 3. Tina & Shelley, That seems to cover the website for the coordinators, would that also apply to the mailing list? To my knowledge, the mailing list isn't actually part of Genweb even though each county has a mailing list. I have had several people use the mailing list in the past for offering look-ups back when Rootsweb was still self owned. I was told that the mailing list was separate from the USGenweb and that I couldn't stop the advertising to do look-ups for a fee. The thing that would concern me the most is the people who think that because it is allowed on the mailing list, that I was referring the person. When the lady got ripped off, she paid and got nothing in return, she let me have it because I allowed it on my mailing list. Alot of people don't understand that us coordinators don't control this. Shelley, you may want to let you subscribers know that you don't have any knowledge about this person or the work that they do and if they have any questions they should e-mail the person directly. You could also tell them to check your look-up page for help with research. Just my 2 cents worth, Debie Blindauer Calumet & Sheboygan Counties

Shelley :) From Rootsweb 'Terms & Conditions' MyFamily.com, Inc. may, from time to time, provide opportunities to users of the Web Service to link to or buy services from third parties. Sites of those third parties may be subject to terms and conditions different from those found here. MyFamily.com, Inc. makes no warranty concerning third party provided goods or services and you agree that any recourse for dissatisfaction or problems with those goods or services will be sought from the third party provider and not from MyFamily.com, Inc.
