    1. [WIGEN-L] Military Home Question
    2. Debie & Joe
    3. Hi all, I am hoping someone on this list can help me out. I am in the middle of a project and within the listing are alot of civil war vets who are listed as residing in the "National Home" and some listed as residing in the "Wisconsin Veterans Home". Does anyone have any idea where these two places are located and perhaps in what county, if the National one is even in our state? Thanks in advance, Debie

    1. [WIGEN-L] copy right infringement
    2. MAK
    3. MY OPINION: You can't copy right facts, only the presentation of them. Doing a lookup is providing an educational service. Copyrights are not broken unless you start posting the copyright material in the format it is presented. Passing on of "facts" is always acceptable. If ya don't believe me, check out this site: http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/ R/S MAK > ATTACHMENT part 2 message/rfc822 > Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2000 19:41:36 -0600 > From: Clare E Guse <ceguse@juno.com> > To: WIGEN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [WIGEN-L] lookups and copyright > > Hi everyone , > > I have a question about lookups in books that are under copyright. 2. MAK
    3. Tina, Kelly, Ken, and all others, The chat last night was really helpful, especially on how to use MIRC. If anyone out there is timid about coming on down to chat, well, don't. It was a pleasant evening, even though I got there late. All of us were able to express their own opinions with light hearted kidding. I feel like I know some other people, especially from AL And TX. Even got some new .wav files to play with and meet some new people. One thing I would ask Tina is that you send out the warning so we get it Tuesday evening instead of Wedneday. With my commute to work, etc, I sometimes don't get home late, like last night and end up going OH NO, and almost forget the chat! I will try to put it on my planning schedule, as I feel COMMUNICATION is the number one key to sucess, right behind great leadership (which we have) and creative volunteers (which are plentiful!) Also, Tina, for some people that night doesn't work. Perhaps every other week we could set up an alternate time, if you get enough nods??? Just my thoughts. Have a nice day, out the door... 1. [WIGEN-L] Search Engine Submission Tutorials
    2. Hi guys: Per some requests in last nights chat, here's the site for tutorials on search engine submissions, how they work, how to program for them to get the best rating and a list of the major search engines with links to them for submitting your URL. I used this site to submit several sites I created to the search engines and they are consistently being ranked in the top 10 returns in their categories. The URL is: <http://www.searchenginewatch.com/> Hope you will find this helpful. I've also gotten to be pretty knowledgeable about the subject, so if you have any questions on meta tags and how they work with the search engines, just let me know. 1. [WIGEN-L] lookups and copyright
    2. Clare E Guse
    3. Hi everyone , I have a question about lookups in books that are under copyright. The USGenWeb volunteer pages (http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/copyright.html) seem to imply that one needs to get the author's permission in writing to do lookups in a book under copyright. The new WIGenWeb pages suggest that if one own's the book, then one can do lookups. I have someone volunteering to do lookups in a book published in 1991 by a historical society. I also own a recently published book (again by a historical society) that I would like to do lookups in. Anybody know what's right? 1. [WIGEN-L] Reminder of Chat and WI-FOOTSTEPS
    2. Hi all, It has been wonderful over the last week to see the posting of so many new links and resources! I have created a new mailing list for the WIGenWeb Archives. This list is called WI-FOOTSTEPS. This list is the place for you and WI visitors to share original Wisconsin source material: wills, deeds, bible records, tax lists, cemetery files, pension applications, obituaries, old letters, marriage lists, etc., with other Wisconsin researchers. The submissions will be uploaded to the appropriate county/directory of the WIGenGenWeb Archives. Subscription instructions and further information can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/wi-footsteps.html Tomorrow evening is the WIGenWeb Project Meetings Place: IRC server: irc.rootsweb.com (6667) Room: #USGW-WI Time: 9 PM EST Wednesdays http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/irc-chat.html Hope to see as many of you there as possible! (I might be a little late. I have a niece's 12th birthday to celebrate.) Tina

    3. We've started a Photo Project for Wisconsin. It is located at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/photo.html I've only got a few counties up, and CCs are welcome to do their own photo pages that we will link to. However, I'm happy to set up county pages if you would like to submit your photos to the project. Their permanent location is in the USGenWeb Archives. So start digging for those Wisconsin photos! 1. [WIGEN-L] Pierce County, WI Website Update
    2. Hi All: I just finished transcribing and uploading the last of the pre-1907 Birth Index for Pierce County, WI this morning. That completes the last of the vital statistics indexes for the county. So now, whether they were born, married, died or buried in Pierce County, you should be able to find them! I have both Wood county and Portage county with a search engine... http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/wood/wood.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/portage/portage.htm It is so much nicer and my researchers love it... Here is the code (BTW, I changed it to Kewaunee so it will work for your pages as is, but if you check it out and it needs to be twicked, email me and I'll check it. Just cut and paste it into your page like I did on mine - see above URLs) : Start copying below this line: <CENTER> <TABLE CELLPADDING="5" WIDTH="95%" BGCOLOR="#000080" BORDER="1"> <TR> <TD> <FONT COLOR="#FFFFFF"><B> <CENTER> <form method="post" action="http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/htsearch"> Match: <select name=method> <option value=and>All the words <option value=or>Any of the words </select> Format: <select name=format> <option value=builtin-long>Document Name and Headline <option value=builtin-short>Document Name Only </select> Sort by: <select name=sort> <option value=score>Score <option value=time>Time <option value=title>Title <option value=revscore>Reverse Score <option value=revtime>Reverse Time <option value=revtitle>Reverse Title </select> <input type=hidden name=config value=htdig> <br> <INPUT TYPE="radio" HIDDEN NAME="restrict" VALUE="/wi/">Search Wisconsin &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <INPUT TYPE="radio" HIDDEN NAME="restrict" VALUE="wi/kewaunee" CHECKED>Search Kenaunee County&nbsp;&nbsp; <input type="text" size="30" name="words" value=""> <input type="submit" value="Search"> <BR> <BIG><FONT COLOR="#FFFFFF">Search the USGenWeb Archives (Enter a surname or place).</FONT></BIG> </CENTER> </form> </B></FONT> </TD> </TR> </TABLE> </CENTER> Stop copying above this line!!! If anyone else wishes to use it, let me know if you need help altering the code for your pages... R/S MAK ====================== Hi, I was wondering if anyone who has a search engine for their page (something like freefind or pico) has their county's archives or genconnect boards indexed too. I know the 2 have their own search engines, but I was just thinking how nice it would be for the person visiting the page to be able to do it all in one shot. Would that even be allowed?
