    1. [WIGEN-L] Passing it along...
    2. Nance Sampson
    3. I received a very nice message yesterday that I thought I would pass along to you all. Here it is: Dear Nance, I have been searching for Abram Coon in Eau Claire County for some time and found him today on your site! I'll need to check more original documents to be sure it is the Abram Coon I seek, but I'm pretty sure. Also, I've been tortured by a poorly written 1860 census entry for my John F. Stone family in Bridge Creek, Eau Claire, WI. I thought it looked like "Hortoutice" but thought what kind of name is that?! Today, on your site, I found an enlisted man whose age would match with the name Hortentio Stone. At last! I can't thank you enough for the work you have done. You are blessing families all over the world. May God bless you. Warm Regards, Kathy Jensen +++++++++++ The items that Kathy found were in records that were donated by other people (Thanks Joy, Tina and Cheryl!). I wrote Kathy back and encouraged her to consider donating information to our project -- which is what I will continue to do to help Wisconsin become a major contributor to the USGenWeb Archives project! Just had to share this with you all. Thanks! -- Nance mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net

    1. [WIGEN-L] Motions Presented.
    2. Hi all, The Page guidelines that are posted on http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer.html are a combination of the USGenWeb Project By-laws and the USGenWeb Project Info for Volunteers located at http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/countypage.html and http://www.usgenweb.org/official/bylaws.html respectively. Part of the decision we face is the definition of bylaws vs. guidelines. That is why this discussion was brought to the list, for resolution, guidance, and consensus from the group as a whole. Creativity, autonomy, sense of teamwork is what the bottom line discussion is all about. The motions presented will add further definition and clarity to the guidelines posted and will serve as a tool for all of us to use in the administration of our pages. By bringing these to vote we can put to rest these lingering questions, and provide a mechanism for dealing with future issues should they arise. Discussion of these motions will continue until Monday, March 22, 2000. Voting will begin on Wednesday, March 23, 2000, and continue until Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at 9 PM EST. All CC's and Co-CC's will have one vote each, majority voting will rule, and the volunteers page updated accordingly. Submission of logos for consideration will be accepted until Monday, March 22, 2000, and the URL for the submitted logos will be available on-line prior to the vote commencing. I will announce the method of voting prior to the start. Tina

Or the LOW FEES, oh it's FREE? Probably not... I also like the lake one and with COX cable loads like nothing flat (grin)... There is always someone out there to bitch a fit, no matter what. AS for choices, that is why I asked for a vote. Democracy can be a great thing. Liked the comments about the IL voting system. Has merit. And I reply to this: Here is an excerpt from an email posted by our SC back in December, and the way I read it, we have not had the choice, but have been instructed to comply or suffer the consequences, (VBG) although, I have not found out yet as to what they would be. Excerpt begin ------- Every page must have a pointer to the Wisconsin State Page, and must display the USGenWeb Logo and the WIGenWeb Logo. These logos are available at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/graphics.html. Please have these logos and links to the state page in place by January 15, 2000. End excerpt -------- Just my two cents worth, and by no means meant to offend anyone, just reposting the e-letter and wondering. 3. All, In IL, where I am also a CC, they: * announce a vote, * take about a week for discussion on the ILGen list, * call for the vote, * give about 5-7 days for voting, then * close the voting. Voting is over at a specific time, on a specific day. Votes are submitted either to the list or one of 2 people, who copy each other on all votes and cross-check each other's counts. Usually, the SC knows who is out of town, ill or otherwise out of the loop, and can contact them, if necessary. It seems to work well. Just a suggestion. Take what you like & leave the rest. ;-) Marsha MKnauft@aol.com wrote: > > Hello all, > > As I have said in the past, I prefer to have a graphically "slim" page > which allows for fast loading. 3. This is kind of funny because I just got a very rude and immature email from somebody saying basically how dare I have those graphics on my page because genealogists have better things to do than wait for those (might I add TINYusgenweb and wigenweb) graphics to load, and they are not interested in seeing them, and my less than 30kb of graphics I have on my page caused the poor guy to have to wait 15 minutes for the page to load. HA HA. Oh ya, and I have "cutsy" little boxes around my data (I.E. a table) that is just as equally useless to him. I've been heavily repressing my urge to email them an equally polite letter back letting him know that he really let his ignorance show. Maybe I'll just add some background music. That lake applet might work too. : ) I love the lake applet. Does the person who created that blue Wisconsin banner thing know what font that is in? In the bylaws it states: "A website may list research materials and/or services which may be for sale/hire, either by the coordinator, a genealogy society, or others. Such a listing shall not be on the main web page for the site, but may be linked from the main web page. It may be appropriate to include a disclaimer that the coordinator and The USGenWeb Project do not guarantee the contents of such research materials and/or the expertise of any professional researchers." I'm just wondering though how much is too much links to things that the people would have to pay for? Should there be a set number of things that could be for fee, or maybe a percentage of your page. I'm torn on this matter because I have the historical society giving me indexes to things people can purchase, but the USGenweb moto is practically "free genealogy on the internet". I don't like being a classified ad for the county library and historical society, but I know the people who come to my pages who've purchased things are happy I have it. (though there are also probably people who hate it) Where does the balance come in? Now the historical society wants to know if I'll put the name of a person who will do research for a fee on my pages. I don't think it's right to to advertise all this 'for fee' stuff when the USGenweb advertises 'free genealogy', but if even some of the researchers are willing to utilize it, do I not put it up just because of my own personal feelings? Perhaps this is something the SC can clarify more for me.. or us. Melissa

    2. MAK
    3. I think some people mis-understood the intent of my motions. My belief is that there should be an offical vote on ALL issues which are raised in discussion that will ultimately determine what WI CCs can or can't do on the pages. A "discussion" just doesn't cut it, as the majority of people don't even get involved , but are "forced" to live with the vocal majority. All WI CCs have a right to determine what happens in the WIGenWeb project and the fairest way for all to be heard and represented is in a vote. Second, way TOO much was read into my motion about whether or not there should be an offical set of WIGenWeb logos or banners (this is a bar across the top of the page combining words and graphics - NOT banner as in a flag). Simply put, what I suggested was a set of logos or banners, in differing color schemes, so they MATCH the pages that each CC currently has. I didn't say anything about stiffeling anyone's creativity, taking down what you have, or anything else. We are already using the USGenWeb Logo, and it seems to make sense (to some people) to add the WIGenWEb Logo (some people are using them and NONE of us voted on it or agreed to it, we just sorta did it, and now there is a hodgepodge of stuff, but NONE of it is offical without a vote). Besides, all WI CC's will have the right to vote whether mandatory use for the logo/banner is IN or OUT. If we vote YES on it, then all WI CCs have the right to vote on what logo to use. [I made a joke about the cow, as the SC and I have a great working relationship and can poke alittle fun at each other without having to explain it is in jest. But if it is voted in, I WILL use it.] Also, I stated for the MAIN page, not all the pages, but if the WI CC wanted to use it on each, they could. Contrary to popular belief, we DO happen to be an organization, which provides free genealogy to the public. While we DON'T sell anything, we certainly provide a service. USGenWeb has guidelines (by-laws) which we are required to follow. Also, there are WIGenWeb by-laws posted. The point is that NONE of the WI CCs voted on them, which seems like the WI CCs would want to have the right to vote them in or out, especially if we are going to have to follow them. While discussions on the topic may be heated (grin), please try to be kind and thoughtful in your replies (and remember your email has the same effect as if standing with a microphone in front of a large audience - the delivery is being broadcast to many people, without the body language, so your message could be easily misunderstood). There are so many wonderful people on this list, who would love to hear ALL the opinions, when put forth in a positive and constructive format. There is NO need to get huffy, or make inappropriate remarks about people who are different from YOU or YOUR tastes. (And if you have the urge, send it privately to avoid embarassment.) In closing, I am extremely proud to support the few organizations who claim my membership, and try to treat those individuals with the same respect and dignity that I would like to be afforded. And damned right, I am a FLAG waving, baby kissing, country loving MARINE, who will defend your right to disagree with me, to DEATH if necessary. So, please, take take time to look at what the current by-laws are and what my post said. We might have more in common than not. Thanks for listening, and constructive criticism (one on one) is always welcome. R/S MAK --- WIGEN-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
