Bob, I usually respond by telling them this is a site for genealogical research and I can't post their query unless it has something to do with that purpose. Then I apologize, and, if I can, point them to a site that would help them. That usually has to do with adoptions, tho, or reunions. But, I've never had to deal with someone looking to collect a debt! Debie, If you have outlook express there is a way to have all your mail forwarded to someone else. Why not have a friend take it for awhile if you can do this.... It will give you a break until things improve. I know what the email can do to you. Have just experienced much the same only mine was harrassment. Jan
Just one more quick thought. It is unlikely, but there is always a chance of getting a nasty virus by opening such mail. If they're venting their anger at a genealogy page, their judgement is already impaired. Better to delete and miss a mailing or two. This will pass probably as quickly as it started and the folks who are genuine will write back. And the sun will probably rise tomorrow even if they don't. Rita
Debbie: I agree that these things should be forwarded to Oprah Winfrey, but I also think that perhaps a notice on the main page of your website, such as the contents of the email you just sent us, giving your stand on the issue might help as well. It might make these people stop and think before they send something. Debbie Barrett http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/
We are so glad to see so many of you have cast your votes. Just a reminder to those who have not-the voting will end tomorrow, Wednesday, April 5, 2000 at 9:00p.m. EST. It sometimes is hard to determine what the letter will be about just by the subject line, and you have to open them to see if it pertains to your county genealogical site. I am sure Debie deletes them if she is sure they are about the children's case. I think the suggestion to forward them is a good one, but again it is taking time from Debie that she does not have. Maybe there is a friend that could access Debie's mail, and delete/forward the bad ones? (As a tempory measure of course) Debie, I am sorry for the problems you are having. I will be saying a prayer for you and your mother. Shelley Marathon and Lincoln Counties
Hi all, WIGenWeb Project Meetings Place: IRC server: irc.rootsweb.com (6667) Room: #USGW-WI Time: 9 PM EST Wednesdays http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/irc-chat.html I *may* be a bit late, as my father-in-law, is celebrating his 70th birthday :-) Tina
Hi all, The Wisconsin BLM Land Patents are online! All counties are now available. Special thanks to Joy Fisher for making this material available to Wisconsin researchers. Visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/blm-toc.html Tina
Dear Debie, I agree with Rita, do not open the ones that are of this subject. Forward them to the address that Rita provided, or using the delete key, would be your best course of action. Your site is just a handy and visible place for some to vent. You are in no way responsible for answering any of them. Tina
My county, Clark, is quite small and I enjoy manually handling the email queries. As a result, I read every one. I have had my second query that is not genealogically related and would like to know how others handle these type of queries. In the first non-g query, a man was looking for another man to settle a debt. I just received a second query and it "sounds" like a man searching for a non-related man; I can't tell the motive. Do you post all queries regardless? Do you question the query-writer? Do you toss it? Bob
Don't open any of them and upset yourself! These folks are just going to anything with the county name. Forward it all to Opra's site e-mail: Site:http://www.oprah.com/email/email_landing.html or: http://www.oprah.com/email/reach/email_reach_comments.html This is not your stuff, don't mess with it and don't let it mess with you either. or just reply to each with the above address (not worth the effort really), or just delete the whole mess! Hi All, I am coming to all of you for some help. I don't know what to do to make this stop, so any advice would be wonderful. As most of you know I have the Calumet County site. It wasn't known to me until it was referenced in a letter tonight, but it seems Oprah Winfrey did a show on tortured children today. Back a couple of years ago Brillion, a small city in Calumet County had a family by the last name of Roger's, this family was sick as they locked their daughter in a dog cage in a cold, dark basement. It was indeed cruel and made me cry, it still makes me cry to think what those children have gone through. Since the show aired, I am up to 120+ letters coming to me or to the query page from some very nasty people. I am being killed here. In it's own I might be able to deal with this if I had nothing else going on. However right now all of my spare time and even time that isn't spare is being placed to help my parents. My mom underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor, is going through chemo and radiation and is currently in the hospital due to blood clots in her legs. The tumor greatly affected her speech area and for some unknown reason I am about the only one who can understand what she is trying to say, so I don't have time to be dealing with these letters. If anyone has a suggestion, other than changing my e-mail address as I have had this address for many, many years and wouldn't know where to begin to make the changes for my own genealogy, I would greatly appreciate it. Please help, I don't want to shut down Calumet county, but I am slowly losing my mind here. Below are some of what I received and I won't add the really graphic sick ones. Please help! I don't do this to my kids, I didn't like them doing this to their kids and I didn't condone them doing this. I don't even know the family. Debie are you some kind of sick people in this town? to have young children imprisoned in their own home, and the "city Officals" don't even take the incentive to help, the judge doesn't sentence the parents? maybe someday they will suffer as the children did, they are the true PIGS. the police and judge: Calumet Co. PIGS. This is an automatically-generated notice. Please contact your local officials in regard to the children of Micahael & Angeline Rogers. The horrible abbuse these children suffered is only equaled by the unforgivable sentence from the judge on this case. In the past my family has vacationed in Wisconsin-I have no intentions of ever driving through your state again-I am disgusted that a communitty would not cry out for its children. I truly hope htat the people of Calumet County have treated this couple with scorn and distaste-I understand they are attempting to regain custody-I urge you to investigate this story and plead with your friends and neighbors to come to the rescue of these 4 young children. What kind of people are you? How could you do this to your own children? You should be tortured, you have no right to live after what I saw on Oprah. How dare you even have a website about your county you sick little bitch! I pray to God you suffer and suffer real bad for letting this happen. Why didn't you do something to stop thsi family? I hope your children turn on you someday for what you've done to them!!!!!!!!!

Okay.... I give up. I just ordered "Wisconsin Men of Achievement" in addition to the MOP and "Notable Men of Wisconsin" I already had... and although absolutely fascinating, none of them have Mr. SCHLEIF (see below) in them. Is anyone aware of any other biographical books or can point me in the right direction? I've pretty much scraped everywhere I could at this point (well, obviously not EVERYWHERE). Granted... I wouldn't normally spend this much time on one query, but I'm enjoying the learning process and find the information valuable myself. Thanks, Kelly ...I'm writing you because there is a book about men of Milwaukee in the early days, and I saw an index of it that included a relative of mine, Edward J. SCHLEIF, a dentist ... I'm totally stopped in my research on his line, and of course have tried to find out what the book said about him, without success. I really think the name of the book was different from "Men of Progress", although it was similar. My understanding of it is that it included biographies of early Milwaukee men...
Christopher Latham Sholes, Samuel Soule and Carlos Glidden built the first typewriter in a small machine shop in Milwaukee across the street from the Milwaukee Journal newspaper office. Newsmen from the Journal tested the machine in various stages of its development, and ultimately the device was patented and sold to Remington Company in 1873. Kelly
