    3. Marie, So what if the logos are a little out of date, Keep up the great work, and look out for that lightening... I am laughing with you on that one, YIKES, We had a major injection of virus's out here and the only thing that went out for me was my FTM with 30 years of data (grrrrrrr) and of course, I hadn't backed it up in a year or so, so..... a whole year's worth of work is gone gone gone, down the black black hole of the cyberspace... 1. [WIGEN-L] My 2 cents worth
    2. Debie & Joe
    3. Tina, My 2 cents worth would be to suggest you contact the CC for that county or counties and ask if everything is alright and if they are aware that people are voicing concerns to the state level. If you get no response within say a week or two (someone elses time frame and I thought it reasonable) then place the county(ies) for adoption. I guess the first question that came to my mind was what exactly did the writer mean? Is it that the site has old links or links that go nowhere or is it just that no new cemeteries or such have been placed on-line for that length of time? I guess that is the deciding factor for me. Ok, there's my 2 cents worth, Debie Sheboygan & Calumet County

    1. RE: [WIGEN-L] Question of the Day
    2. Kelly & the Flock
    3. I think regardless of political views or personalities, most of us want our pages to be the best they can be. This subject didn't really stem from a plethora of time to "police" websites, but rather complaints from visitors about non-responsive CCs and pages wallowing in stagnancy when offers are made to include information. Menominee comes to mind as a site where I have added nothing since I updated it the first time, although I don't think anyone has complained. I have two counties in California also that are hopelessly stagnant, and I live here. I simply have too much to do. (I did offer them for adoption but didn't get any takers.) I have actually found it easier to get stuff from Wisconsin than I have here in my own state. It's cheaper, too because people in CA aren't interested in old WI yearbooks, gazatteers and histories (theoretically). It's embarrasing to admit that you don't have time and would like to unload a county. Colorado has a "wishlist" page for people wishing to adopt a county that is currently adopted, as well as listing counties currently up for adoption. I think this would be a good idea for WI, because 1) it provides an assistant or contributor if one is wanted/needed, and 2) it gives someone an easy "out" if they would like that. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cogenweb/ccinfo/cowish.htm. I guess it is possible that a CCs feelings might get hurt if their county was listed, but just because someone wants to adopt a county doesn't mean a CC is doing a bad job, and the person wanting to adopt might be a wonderful asset to the county as an assistant, or just a contributor. 1. [WIGEN-L] it's been a year wah!
    2. MAK
    3. Tina, Couple of thoughts on the "hasn't been updated in a year"... WHY do they think that? I had someone write that about one of the sites, checked it out, and the cc was adding away, they just didn't see it on the MAIN page, didn't try any of the links, so... To avoid this, I have a LAST updated date on each page that is automatic, each time I go into and edit a page... That way, anyone can see how lazy (ha ha ha) I have been... Second, maybe there isn't anything to be added at this time? Some sites are pretty awesome... Third, maybe the CC isn't out there any more (grin)... Did the person try emailing them and asking them what was new on the site and NOT get a response? OK OK, I am on the side of us overworked, underpaided, not appreciated cc's!!! ROFLOL... but I wouldn't sweat the load. The majority of us are here and respond, maybe not as fast as desired by some, but certainly fast enough to earn our paychecks! BTW, I haven't recieved my first check, and it's been four years... R/S MAK __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Not an easy one!!! I do think that I would email the CC and ask if all was well. Ya never know.... Maybe they need help. A little bit of help from each of us, whether it be material or support might pull a site back together. If its disinterest - then so be it - we move on. Have to agree with those saying it is very hard to get information from a distance. I don't live in WI and finding info is real difficult. My Waushara and Bayfield are doing extremely well, Waukesha is fair to middling, but am having a problem with finding for Ashland County.. I guess I had the same problem with Bayfield for about a year or maybe a little longer and then all of a sudden we whet ballistic. <g> So, I have HIGH HOPES for Ashland!! In the mean time I do with what I can...... As Ashland is not disinterest on my part - I'm thinking that others are experiencing the same problems. EXCEPT of course you lucky people who live in Wisconsin. <g> Jan Ashland, Bayfield, Waukesha and Waushara Visit Jansdigs for History & Genealogy - New & Under Construction http://www.jansdigs.com/ Check Out Internet Pathways in History http://www.ipih.org/

    1. [WIGEN-L] Question of the Day
    2. Tina: I echo some of the sentiments already expressed here. Although it would be nice to see every website with as much information as possible on it, that is not always the case, nor does it state anywhere, EXCEPT in the goal of our project, i.e., to provide free genealogical material to the public, that one has to place materials online. But, with that said, it is required that our sites be maintained according to a minimum standard, current contact information, logos, etc., and I believe those are the things to which Tina is referring (correct me if I am wrong). I also believe the CC should be given the opportunity to ask for help if they need it. I, and many others here would be willing to lend a hand should it be required. Should they need help, speak up. If they are no longer capable of maintaining the site, even to the minimum requirements, speak up. No one can help if they aren't made aware that a problem even exists. And, if they refuse to do either, then I would read that as noninterest and place the county up for adoption. Sad, but sometimes you have to move on. 2. First of all, I would check with the coordinator, and find out if there is a problem. I don't know if it was stated that we definitely HAD to update our counties, but I take it for granted that we need to keep our counties fresh! If there is a problem with time or resources, maybe the CC would like help, and a co-CC could be found. Shelley Lincoln and Marathon Counties

    1. Re: [WIGEN-L] Question of the Day.
    2. Melissa .
    3. Well, I don't have the rules for CC's at hand, but I don't recall there being anything that actually says that we need to add information to the page. (I mean info like indexes, cemetery records, etc) I think we are supposed to have things like addresses and phone numbers for libraries and historical societies and such, but as far as I am concerned the goodies we add are just an added bonus for the researcher. (Hope I'm not way off base here in my thinking.) Besides, what some of the CC's have had to deal with with their county's historical or genealogical society, they might be afraid to put stuff online. Another thing you could look at is what's already on this page? Does it have some good stuff on it, but nothing new has been added for a year, or is it just the basic page that was there when the usgenweb started up? OR.. you could email this particular CC and relay the message to them. Ask if anything is in the works, or suggest that maybe they put a message on their page asking for volunteers to submit info they might have. I've found while having this page that if someone complains about something, you just ask if they will volunteer to help rectify it and they will usually shut up. : ) but that's the mean approach. 1. Re: [WIGEN-L] Question of the Day.
    2. Nance Sampson
    3. I think when most of us started our pages, we were excited and really gung-ho on getting things rolling. We soon found out that it is hard work to find new material, type it up and present it to the public in a clear, concise and as accurate a package as we could. Yes, it does become tiring after a while. And for those who don't have the luxury of living very near to the counties that they represent, it can be next to impossible to find information that they can use on their pages. BUT, we do have a responsibility to keep our pages up-to-date. In this past year, we have elected a new state and assistant state coordinator, along with a new state logo. Our pages should reflect these changes...in fact, I believe there were some guidelines placed somewhere (wasn't there?) that stated we need to put this new information on our pages. At the very least, Tina asked us to "please make the changes by such and such a date" (again, trying to go by memory on this and I might be remembering wrong, but what if I am correct? Did all of us make the changes?) If we can't even do that much, then I believe we should hand over the reins to others who are willing to give it a try. Not only does it reflect that we don't have an interest in our pages, but it reflects that we might not even care to help others who come to our pages for that help. It also adds pressure to the CC's of the surrounding counties. People will write and ask for help from another county coordinator when they see that that person keeps adding new info or at least makes their pages current -- especially when they have written to the CC of the county they are interested in and either their messages bounce back to them, or they just don't get an answer. I have read where CCs who aren't able to get new information will go in and change something -- even the background color, just to let others know that they are still around and willing to be of help if at all possible. So, I guess what I would suggest, Tina, is that you write to the CC(s) - (more than one?) who are not keeping their pages at least up-to-date, and ask them if they are still interested in hosting the page. Give them a week or two to respond, and then put the page up for adoption. I hope you all don't think I'm being too harsh, but we do represent our state. I think we should do our best to make Wisconsin known for it's helpfulness, it's willingness to work with each other, etc. We really have a great group of people (come meet us in the chat room on Wednesday nights - it's really fun!) and I think together we can reach our goals. Along with what Melissa said about asking for help, if there are CCs out there that need our help, I'm sure there are others of us who would be more than willing to lend a hand. But we won't know if you don't ask. -- Nance (trying to gracefully jump off the soapbox) mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net WIGenWebProject@aol.com wrote: > Hi all, > > I am facing a question of the day, and want to ask your input. We have conducted many roll calls in recent months, therefore I would like to find another way in which to accomplish this task. What I have done is, to post the results of the last roll call to the http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/rollcall.html for all to verify. If you find that your e-mail address is incorrect, you may contact Tim or I for correction before submission to the Election Committee. I would like to supply this list by Thursday, June 15, 2000.
