I received several different ways to convert one Works to Word, (etc) thanks to the great people on this list. Onward to better things! Rita.
I need to move a file from Works to Word for someone working on a cemetery gravestones transcription. She has Word only, and gets computer "gibberish" when she tries to open the file. I have both programs. I tried: *opening the file in Works, *highlighting, *then Ctrl +C, *then opening Word, *then Ctrl + V. *Got nothing. Please, I need some computer magic help from one of you wonderful wizards! How is this done? Thank you so much in advance, Rita - Oconto CC

Hi all, Wondering if Rusk Co. has a new coordinator yet? If not, is the old page accessible anywhere? When I try the URL: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~wirusk/> I get a "Not Found" error from rootsweb. For Jan, LOL, obviously when you said lucky you who live in WI, you haven't had the pleasure of one of their WINTERs.... hee hee hee. I migrated to CA and live there now, and it did take about a year before people actually trusted me with the WI sites and THIER information. On the mailing list, I begged and pleaded for help and then finally went for pity about the third year... Whining I posted "If you don't give up the info, the site will never be of any use..." A month later, I was up to my eyeballs. Now I have "helpers" who do all the work (typing obits, transcribing cemetery indexes, etc) and then I put the stuff up with full credit to them... So I am like the webmaster, and they are the actual people who put up the info... Another thing I had great luck with is purchasing books on the local area, for example some genealogical societies actually publish their info, like LaFayette county, so I can do research, and lookups and encourage people to buy the books, as it is copyrighted and can't be put on the web. In some cases, I am asking permission to put up indexes of published works... I share all your pain who have said 1) IT's A LOT OF WORK, and 2) INFO when you don't live there is hard to come by... But share in your JOY, when you send out I FOUND A LONG LOST RELATIVE!!!! By and far, the WI CCs are doing a ton of great stuff, and yes, there might be a few counties lacking, but, I firmly believe our users need to step up to the plate also... Some of these people are TAKERs and we need to encourage them to be SHARERs when we help them find something... Also, sometimes I find I am clueless to all the resources available, and then you hit the right person and get a flood of info so now you are concerned you can't get it posted fast enough... Nuff said, keep up the great work, I appreciate it tons, as I live outside the state and use WI pages a lot!!! Just a reminder! The Waupaca County Bio forum is for posting biographies only as stated at the top of the page. If you should have questions or queries please post these at the Waupaca County Query Forum at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Waupaca. Also the biographies from "History of Northern Wisconsin" 1881 were transcribed by one volunteer and we do not have any other information on the subjects of the biographies. this is a good idea - that book is in our public library, and also the Historical library. That is a good idea for the "free time" I will have after I finish the centennial name indexes, and the 3 census films I am currently working on. this will be about 2005 I think! ;-) Seriously, tho, this will be my next project. And I can get both Lincoln and Marathon Counties copied. Thanks! And I agree - it is good to see all of us "getting along" Shelley

Hello: Just another one of my two cents going on here (I'm going to be out of pocket change soon!). Actually, I wanted to add my own story to this, partly because it shows the power of what we are doing here with these county websites and throughout the entire genealogy Internet community. My gr.grandmother was Mary Ellen Yates, b. 1858 in IL, d. 1902 in WI. There was no death certificate, no obituary and very little info had come down to me as my grandmother, her daughter was only 7 when she died. Her other children had died when I was still in elementary school in the 60s, long before I became interested in genealogy. The only info I had on her parents was from her marriage license in 1876 giving her father as Rhuny Yates and her mother as Arminda Wilson. From other family members I knew that Arminda's maiden name was Scritchfield or Scrutchfield. I picked up the Pierce County, WI site in November of 1997. I thought that I had, over the years, found everything there was to be found on my family in the area, but I was pleasantly surprised that I had not. While transcribing the 1880 census for Spring Lake Township where my ancestors settled in 1867, I found a Wilson family living just down the road from my Britton families. The wife's name was Arminda, the same as my gr.gr.grandmother's. Living just a little ways further down the road was the family of Johnson Scrichfield. The light went on. I knew it was too much of a coincidence that someone with such an unusual last name and another person with the same name as my gr.gr.grandmother could be living so close together and not be connected. At about this same time, my mother and I were going through some old family photos she had been sent and in amongst them was a very elderly man in a coffin with the name William Johnson Wilson and a date on it. Click, on came another light bulb. Arminda and her family moved sometime between 1880 and 1900 to KS and then disappeared from my radar screen. I sent to the KS Vital statistics for a death certificate on this individual and found he was the half-brother of my gr.grandmother, Mary Ellen. It gave his birthplace as IL and his mother as Arminda. I knew I had the right guy. I found his obit which listed his birthplace as Higginsville, IL. I plugged Higginsville into the USGS, but only found one place in Vermillion County, IL, so I started there. No luck. Nor did the Bourbon Co. KS (where William Wilson died) have any further info on Arminda or her husband Shedric Wilson. I had found them in the 1900 census giving their birth month and year, but nothing more. They had disappeared by the 1910 census. There were no death certificates, nor a cemetery record in the county for them. And again, no obits. So now what? Back to Arminda's brother, Johnson. By this time, Illinois was placing their early marriage records online and I found a marriage license for Johnson and his wife Elizabeth Sanders in 1850 in Crawford Co., IL. I now had a place to start looking that I felt was more grounded in fact. By looking through the 1850 Crawford Co., IL census, I found Lewis Scrutchfield and family, including my Arminda. Now it was time for my Eureka. But there was more to come. I contacted a woman listed on the Crawford Co., IL website who, for a small fee would check materials at the court house. I wrote, sent my $25.00 and held my breath. Within a couple of weeks, I had Arminda's marriage license (which I never would have found on the Illinois online records, the name is given as Smithfield and Rhuny was so horribly misspelled it was unrecognizable), her father's probate materials from 1856 listing all the children named in the 1850 census, as well as one who had already married and moved out of the family home by 1850. And the fact that he was a widower by 1856, so his wife, Malinda had died during that 6 year time frame. The 1850 census records gave this families place of origin as Indiana. They have their pre-1850 marriage records online, so I gave it a shot. And another little gift fell down from heaven. There was their marriage record, giving Malinda's maiden name as Vest. They were married in April 1828 in Washington County, IN. What had once been a brick wall came crashing down in a matter of weeks. What would have taken years had been accomplished in a relatively short amount of time thanks to the Internet and to all who have been diligently placing genealogical materials online. And it all began with my own desire to help in that process by adopting a very small, rural county in the WIGenWeb project. Hi: Just wanted to add my two cents. This is one of the books that Nance Sampson in Burnett County photocopied Pierce County info from for me. It does indeed give lots of bios on early settlers, the nicest thing being, it was written during most of their lifetimes, or at least their childrens, so the info is more the "horses mouth" kind of stuff, rather than something second hand. Thanks Connie and everyone, I'm so glad I live in Wisconsin with good friends and neighbors, including the people of WIgenweb!!!!! Thanks for the offer Connie for the uploads I might be contacting you if the computer programer can't retrieve all my files. I do have a question on policy for the genweb pages. I have a list of over 4000 names of military files at the Polk Co. Museum. The museum charges $2.00 for the information. Can I put the index of names on the site and how to attain the information from the museum. Does the interfere with the policy of GENWEB for solicitation? Thanks again to everyone for their help and support. Good morning. Just wanted to point out that I am seeing a whole different way of communication on this list, and I really like it!!! This is just wonderful, great ideas, supportive comments, lots of respect. I have always been very proud of this group, mostly because of the high degree of care expressed by the members. Now I am proud and just plain thrilled. I agree with the ideas that are being written. *Try to contact the CC and see what is up in a supportive manner, *send the letter of concern from the visitor (I would not give the identity as it is the concern that is the issue and not who sent it), *ask the CC what their goal is for that site (we are each very individual and should not be compared to one another, nor should our sites), *and outline what are the basic expectations for a WIGenWeb according to the agreements made in the past, to make sure that the CC understands why you have written (new logo, etc). If the e-mail bounces or there is no response within a reasonable amount of time (I liked the two weeks that was suggested by another as it is summer and vacation time, but whatever is reasonable), send an e-mail indicating that the site will be offered for adoption due to lack of response, and give them one more week. Guess that is all for me. Back to lurking and really happy about things. Rita - Oconto County http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioconto/
The complete 157 Waupaca County biogrphies have been posted to the website at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WaupacaBios Most of these bios detail the many places these subjects had lived before coming to WI before 1881. Many of them give dates, marriages, spouses names and birth dates/places, check them out and see if you ancestor is there. Even if your ancestor isn't the main subject of one of the bios-he or she may be mentioned within someone else's bio. Also for the County Coordinators that have not seen or used this book. It is GREAT. This book is divided by county into each county's townships, etc. It gives a short history of the township/area and then usuually following the history are biographies of some of the people living in that township. I do not have the book or else I would list the counties it covers. (I photo copied the pages I needed.) But you most likely could get this book through inter-library loan. The name again is "History of Northern Wisconsin" and it was published by Chicago: Western Historical Company in 1881 Hope you find your ancestor here! On 6/9 I last wrote about an exciting discovery - finding info on my g-g-g-grandparents (CARPENTER). I'd been looking for them in central New York, only to find out that they'd gone to Wisconsin in the 1850's. I told you of all the neat items I'd learned. Well.......... I got blown away again over the weekend, when Saturday evening I received photos of the tombstones of my ancestor and his wife, another daughter of theirs from a gentleman in Richland County, WI. I had a question about one of the pictures, so on Sunday he sent me even more pictures (14 in all) of the family and the daughter's in law's lots and individual tombstone photos! The info from the tombstones of course gave me some of the date info that I needed for this set of ancestors. Also on Sunday this gentleman sent me all the CARPENTER info he had in his database for Richland County, WI. Then.... Late Sunday evening, a lady somewhere in Wisconsin sent me a blurb she'd gotten that gave me more info on my ancestor, a short bio along with the info that he and wife had had 12 children. (something to work on!) And then... the real kicker of the whole weekend, where my Mr. CARPENTER was born, that he had 12 siblings AND his parents names! What a wonderful week it was. I don't believe I could have asked for a better week! Thanks to both David and Marie for being so helpful and sharing the info ya'll had based on the clues I passed along. When I saw this URL in reference to Wisconsin - even though you'd been talking about Colorado, the very first thing that came to mind at 1:37 AM was cow-ish? Instead of it being the Colorado wish list - co-wish. Guess I'm not getting enough sleep or am getting silly at this time of the AM! Tim
Hi CC's I'm Marie Loughlin, up here in Polk Co., northwestern WI. My computer was struck by lightning last year. I'm still trying to put all the pieces back together again. But since that time, I have not be able to upload any more cemetery's or veteran's records, but I have been able to help my queries out by other literature I have been able to find. I work at the Polk Co., WI Museum in Balsam Lake. They have quite an abundance of local history and genealogy. So, just because my dates haven't changed, or my logo's are still the old ones, doesn't mean I haven't been helping. My pages may say they haven't been updated since 1999 or 98, but we have still been busy answering what we can. I would like to share with all of you the thanks I have gotten on our behalf. I know, that this is all we get. Subject: Nels Fremstad Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 00:49:35 -0400 From: "Ron and Meg Lambalot" <megron@donet.com> To: <mloughli@centurytel.net> Marie!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!! From the bottom of my heart a thousand times Thank You!!! He is a relative. I have always been told that the family name is Framstad, but in the Polk County records I have found Framstad and Framsted used, Framsted is used for Nels' sons death records. I have seen the name Fremstad but not in a way that I could link it to my family. Thank you again. I love GenWeb and the people who thought of it are in my prayers, I wouldn't have gotten half the information I have so quickly or made so many new friends, if it weren't for the GenWeb Project!! St Croix Valley. I believe this is the family I was looking for. Does your Genealogical or Historical society have a web site that would have listing of cemeterys? Much Obliged. Talma We do what we have available at this time. I know that some of the CC's are out of state but the LDS Library still has items for posting or lookups anywhere for the ordering. The libraries are very prevalent, maybe the CC's that are out of state could direct the people toward the data bases that are available for the county or area that they are coordinating for clues. I have found that these people are most appreciative for anything they can get about their family.
