    3. Have never done anything like this - but can some one tell me if it is okay if I list publications for sale that are available, and cover county vitals, etc. If so - would we need some sort of disclaimer on the page????? 3. Kelly- I too try to link as much as I can from my website. I spend time searching the net to find links that can help the researchers of Waupaca County. I will have to play with the archives and text thing as see what I can do. 2. Melissa .
    3. Hi again, I understand the point of the archives with the national search capabilities and I'm all for that, but why can't there be a search engine that DOES cover the county level if they are on the rootsweb server? It might take a little longer, but just let that be an option on the search page. Also, if it's still all about the archives than all of the files we have on our county site could realistically go into the archives project, except for maybe queries, but library and historical society contact info too (the info we're supposed to have) and our county sites would be absolutely obsolete. That just doesn't feel right to me, and I don't think that's what we're striving for. Besides the question of what was brought up the other day. If we're submitting all the goodie info to the archives what happens when someone emails the state coordinator complaining that the page hasn't been updated in a year. The researcher appears to not be enlightened on the archives thing even though a lot of us probably have links to the archives on our page as well. If things are better off in the archives then we probably need to advertise that more. To the CC's and the researchers. What I personally don't like while trying to look things up in the usgenweb system is all the different places I have to go for just one county. First I go to the county page, then I go to the archives to see if anything is there, then I visit the genconnect boards (which usually aren't even linked from anywhere) It would be nice if there was a search that covered at least the archives and county pages. It's also good I think to have links to files on the archives like someone else mentioned if it's not already on their page. That's what I'm talking about here, just a coming together of some of these different projects to make things easier on everyone. I have notetab, but I use frontpage which I like a lot more for page making. I'll have to try the conversion thing. I've always just started over when doing something new, which is why I've never submitted anything to the archives though I've been thinking about it for awhile. 3. Oh, I have two search engines on my site. If one isn't working right, there is another one to use. They are both free ones, and I can have the site reindexed anytime I add new material, which is almost every day. Shari Milks, Manitowoc county

    3. I have everything on my county page. I find it less confusing for the researcher if everything is in one spot. I put obits with the tombstone inscriptions whenever possible, family information and pictures in the marriages. I feel the fewer lists especially ones that are scattered here and there, the easier it is for them to find what they are looking for. It's a "one stop shop".<G> Shari Milks, Manitowoc county

    1. RE: [WIGEN-L] Late Night Thinking
    2. Kelly & the Flock
    3. Actually Melissa, you can do your own search engine. I found this (Maybe Tim found this) and it works terrifically for my Monroe County, OH site... which does have a lot of data on it. http://www.picosearch.com/ This will index all of your pages, and then your pages are completely searchable. It is also unobstrusive and doesn't require huge ads or any ugly things on your page <grin>. What you ask sounds simple, but the search engine would have to be individually set up for each county. You mention the number one reason I set up my pages the way I do. They are set up the way I like to research. I use the archives and GC Boards as an extention of my website, not "yet another place to go". Again, this is _just my opinion and the way I do my pages_. And I'm not trying to suggest what anyone should do or not do with their page. I'm trying to think of my personal criteria for deciding on putting something in the archives, and I think that simplistically, it is things/lists with people's names go in the archives. I keep libraries, research centers, historical societies, placenames, maps, photos, etc. on my webpage. I link to anything and everything that can help a researcher with his work: The SSDI, databases, websites pertaining to the area, histories, the archives, databases, etc. I provide information like which censuses were available for Racine, I link to what is online, and any additional sources I can find. If you hadn't noticed, a nice chunk of the people on the email lists think the only way to research genealogy is to ask an email list. I try to give them ideas. I don't live in WI like many CCs, but I do keep my eyes open. If someone doesn't care to transcribe (I would rather be poked in the eye than transcribe censuses), there is probably a nice large list of people on this email group willing to transcribe. County email lists are another source for people willing to do transcriptions. For Racine, I bought the 1900 CDs, and sent them off and someone else is transcribing them (they are almost done!) He's doing a terrific job, and it was worth the price to me. Kelly Racine County Genealogy http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiracine/ > -----Original Message----- > From: Melissa . 3. Thanks for the explanation-maybe this could be given to the county coordinators when they first become a county coordinator. Since I am fairly new to this I would have really liked this information before I started putting all of these things on the website and now I am getting the idea it should have been put in the state archives instead? I guess I thought that putting the bios on the genconnect pages, etc. was the way to get to most people. This web "stuff" is all new to me and when I had asked about the archive pages, etc. before it wasn't explained to me in this way. I had tried to read through all of the volunteer information pages that the US GenWeb Project provides and I don't remember reading this in there. So are you saying we shouldn't be putting the bios on the GenConnect bio page, obits on obit page, etc? I don't even know how to put records into the archive pages? I guess I need some help?!? I guess I need some help?!? Absolutely not Paula... I think it is a matter of personal preference. I personally am pro-archives and I stuff all of my files there. I'm the File Manager for California, Washington D.C., and Door County, WI. It is a tool to be used or not used, just like the GC Boards --many CCs prefer to do their queries manually or by a different method than the GC Boards. Many CCs prefer to keep their data on their webpages and not submit to the Archives. The archives is also a seperate project, having File Managers much like our CCs. Some of those File Managers actively seek out data for the archives, and may or may not be CCs. I work on transcriptions I find interesting, and I submit them to the archives be they in California, Michigan, Wisconsin, or wherever. To get files into the Archives, just ask Tina. She's the File Manager for Wisconsin and I do believe your county doesn't have its own coordinator ;) Kelly

    2. I don't know if this is the answer to Melissa's question or not, but the reason (I would think) behind having the full documentation of each item, i.e., cemetery, bio, census, in the archives is to make it SEARCHABLE by surname at the national level. The Rootsweb search engine that powers the national search does not search at the county level. So someone entering their surname into that national search would not find the materials they were looking for at the county level. Also, one of the considerations I had prior to placing my materials in the archives was very simple, there are a lot of people out there on the Internet who are blind. They cannot read the tables and graphics and such that we use on standard HTML pages. By providing a text version, they too can access this material in a user friendly manner. Material placed in a table on one of these computers is all run together with no space between one cell and the next to it thus rendering it gibberish. Since my Pierce County site is definitely NOT user-friendly to these computers, I did not want to leave this section of the population out and placed my materials in the archives. As to formatting into text, that is very easily accomplished without having to reenter data. There is a program called NoteTab Light, a freebie which can be downloaded (I think Tina has the URL, sorry Tina forgot to bookmark) that will strip all the HTML code out of a document and place it in text format at the click of a button. I have used it to place all my HTML materials in the WI archives. Debbie http://www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywashin/

    3. I think you bring up good points. I maintain several county sites, and work in the archives as well. The way I have used the "system" --and I believe this is for what it was intended --is to store all of my substantial files in the archives, and keep very little in the way of data on my websites. My webpages link to that archives copy. It is formatted carefully once --in text. The files in the archives have the benefit of being completely searchable, and they are in a format accessible by *anyone* --even those with disabilities. I agree that the GC Boards, aside from the query boards are redundant, but there are a lot of folks who feel better about using them to submit their data. Plus, it gives people ideas for submitting stuff. Also, the archives are permanent. County pages sometimes have the annoying habit of disappearing overnight. Many people choose to not use them, and there are a variety of reasons for that. One is that some county CCs believe that they "take over" the county site, but I think they are a tool and I use them as such. I believe that one main purpose of the county page is to offer the nuances of successful research in a specific area, and to list all of the resources possible that are available to a researcher --not necessarily to archive data. I have no problems with maintaining a TOC on my website to go with the files in the archives for my county, rather than formatting the files in HTML to go on my webpage. (speaking of huge timesavers.) Actually, after all that HTML, formatting text files is actually theraputic <G>. The thing with the "Tombstone Transcription Project" and the other special archives projects, is that they are basically TOCs for certain types of files within the archives. They aren't a seperate or duplicate set of transcriptions. Their main purpose is to group one of a kind of file together visually, to encourage more transcribers and volunteers. 2. Melissa .
    3. With all the different projects that is involved in the USGenweb. I've noticed that there's an awful lot of redundancy in files. For instance, you have bios at the genconnect page, you have bios in the archives, you have bios at the county pages. Same goes with the pre 1907 index and cemetery transcriptions... probably everything for that matter. I have them on my county page, others have them at their pages, but they are also in the archives. Where "should" they really be? I know that the object is to have things archived (hence archives project hey?) so that people don't necessarily have to be searching in WI to find a name... BUT having these things in 3 (or more) different places cannot be helping. I for one have spent hours and hours reformatting Works databases that people have sent me to get my indexes to look nice in HTML. I'm all for the archives project, but I sure as heck don't want to spend more hours reformatting them to look nice in text so the same file can go into the archives and take up more bandwidth. Researchers can submit their data to the archives, but a lot of the types of files they've submitted in the past can now be submitted by them on one of the genconnect boards. I almost feel like we're encouraged to do all this redundant work so we can have "however many MB of data" for our state or whatever. And if it's all about archives, then what's the point of having the county pages because the exact same info is there too in most cases. It's just prettied up to fit our personalities and bylaws. It seems like it would be easier if everyone could just work together on some of this stuff so you don't have CC's and special projects people researching the same files to put online. A volunteer's time could be used much wiser. The person who heads up the cemetery transcription project (or used to) was smart and just made links to county pages that had transcriptions on them. Perhaps the census project could do the same for county pages that have census info or even just indexes, while they work on their "official" transcription. I don't have an answer for the archives, they're just in a league of their own with their own search feature they have. Perhaps there could be a search engine that searched our county pages too at a central search page so one wouldn't have to be searching just WI (well we can't even do that now with the county pages). If they're at rootsweb.com sites, it shouldn't be a problem. (a lot, but not all are) Has this ever been brought up by the state or national coordinators at one of their meetings, or is it just past my bedtime? : ) Melissa ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
