Good morning everyone, As you know the polls have opened for voting in the USGenWeb Project elections. There are some technical issues surrounding this process, that are currently being worked on. The voting period is a month in duration, July 1, 2000, to July 31, 2000. I therefore encourage all of you to wait to vote until these issues are worked out. I will post a note to this list when that is accomplished. Thanks everyone, Tina
Hello out there all you great county coordinators! I am again asking for some assistance. I want to post old news articles from the Waupaca County area to the website and have tried setting the pages up for this, but I am just not getting it the way I like or so it's not boring. Do any of you have old articles posted on your sites that I can maybe get ideas from? I tried checked a few counties and didn't find any or thought it would be easier to ask then search through the whole state county by county. The articles I am talking about are the weekly or monthly ones with local doings such as-Will Finny took in the sights at Oshkosh Wednesday. S.H. Brady and Dr. Goodrick were in New London Wednesday., etc. etc. Thanks everyone! Hi Fellow Researchers, I have just read and signed this online petition: "National Cemetery Protection Act" hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: http://www.petitiononline.com/sg0001/petition.html I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself. Several years ago I was witnessed two headstones that had been removed from their base by vandals. This was at a local cemetery, what I witnessed really got to me as the caretaker of the cemetery proceeded to back his truck up and toss both stones into the back of the truck, breaking one of them. When I got a bit upset and asked why in the world he did that, why didn't he simply find the grave and place them back, I was told that the graves were old, the families don't care anymore and he simply didn't have the time. This kind of stuff we need to put a stop too. Major legislation is necessary NOW!!! If you have a minute, please take a look at the petition, Thanks for your time and have a wonderful holiday weekend, Debie
Happy and Safe Holiday to all, This is the time of year that I gather information for winter posting to the county site, but with the wonderful volunteer help it has also been a very busy month for posting. We have a good number of 1880 census pages transcribed by volunteers Kirk & Cheryl Morschauser and Sue Lattin, all old friends of the site. These are now at the proof-reader for final preparation and will be posted early in July. You will find the newest postings at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioconto/newest.htm These include: *111 new and old county obituaries * New surname postings along with direct e-mail links to the contributing family researchers * Town of How Scrap Book was completely posted - including abbreviated 1880 and 1900 US Census remuneration's for that township *1876, 1877 and part of 1878 newspaper reports on county marriages, deaths, and family events *The Births Page has been started (very exciting!) with the names and dates of old county births up to 1907 from the newspaper; from the Wisconsin Births Pre-1907 Index for Oconto County (an ongoing project as the microfiche is transcribed); and the completed list of births that were not recorded at the time of the event, but for numerous reasons applications were sent to the county for certification years later (mostly for Social Security benefits and life insurance policy claims in the 1930's and 1940's). These are also available through the site search engine on the Oconto County Home Page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioconto/ *In 1876, Richard Hall began a series of articles about county history. Here are the entries he finished and published in the Oconto County Reporter on the 100th anniversary year of our nation. *The "Official Oconto County Centennial Souvenir Program of 1948" is being posted! In celebration of 100 years of Wisconsin statehood, it contains essays and photographs on a wide range of Oconto County history, as well as people and numerous advertisements for the family owned county businesses of that time. The first part has been posted and the rest will come soon. Please be patient as these are scanned images of the original book and take time to load. Scanned and Contributed by Kathy Barlament. Enjoy! And please drive carefully, we need you in this world. My Best To You, Rita - Oconto County WIGenWeb Coordinator
Forwarded as requested. These Voter Ids, will be used in the upcoming USGenWeb Project election. More information will be forwarded as appropriate. The ID is required on the ballot form along with the email address to which it was sent in order for votes to be tabulated correctly. For members who have counties in more than one region the ID is good for all those races in which the member is qualified to vote. The server which is hosting the ballots does not have a lot of bandwidth so please be patient. The URL will be announced when the polls open.
I just got a lead on one of my "brick wall" lines and I am hoping someone out there can help me find further information. Searching for Norman GERARD/GIRARD's death date/certificate. He was living in Grand Rapids, Wood County, WI in 1900 at the age of 70. He was widowed and living as a boarder at hotel. Prior to living in Wood County, he was living in Omro Township, Winnebago County, WI. Or can anyone tell me how Norman was related to a Samuel Girard of Waupaca County, WI? Any help, no matter how small, would really be appreciated. Hi all, I may just have to start a Tina's - Mailbag topic of the week. This one is exciting, and not only a compliment to each and every one of your county sites, but an acknowledgment of the hard work that we all as the WIGenWeb Project have accomplished. I am very pleased to ask, for a volunteer to call this individual and share with them, what each of us already know. WIGenWeb Project Moos! {excuse the joke, I get excited}! Congratulations to each and every one of you. The request in itself is indicative of a job well done. Now any volunteers quick <g> Tina ******* Subj: Help for an article Date: 6/25/00 9:38:23 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: SalemCat3 To: WIGenWebProject Hello! My name is Katy J. I'd like to do an article on Genealogy for our Friday family page, sort of the how-to, basics, and where someone is Wisconsin can look. I was hoping that since your organization seems to be the largest one centering on Wisconsin, I would love to have the opportunity to talk to someone from your office. Please e-mail me back or give me a call at my office, 262-542-2501 ext. 2662. If you can get in touch with me by Wednesday, that would be great. I would really appreciate any help you can give me. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again, Katy J. Vopal
I've received a request for info on: The Tuberculosis Sanitorium State Public School at Sparta, WI I would copy it here but the writer used a different script that won't go through the list but reject. The writer says that she assumes the latter to be some sort of orphanage. Please let me know of any info you may have regarding these. Thanks, Tim

"BAD NEWS: The more popular RootsWeb becomes, the more costly it is to simply stay alive and online. Expenses continue to exceed revenue. We ran up a truly scary loss last year. Without outside help, it's not clear how long we'd be able to go on like this." Above is a quote from the article on the "merger" (ie, buyout) of Rootsweb found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/merge.html To me it seems like Ancestry.com is being made the hero by saving Rootsweb from disastrous losses. Because they understand the importance of the community that Rootsweb developed. Uh-hu, this coming from a web site that charges people to look at census indexes and other things that are here for FREE. Wonder how long it'll take before a tiny itty bitty change here and there begins. So do I have to take my "sponsered by Rootsweb" .jpg down now? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

On this paid researcher note, this is my thoughts. Not all paid researchers are evil and if they are recommended, I will link them, but only with a KNOWN reference... Someone who I have dealt with and whose word is reliable. When I first started out, NO ONE would help me in my county. They shunned me at the Genealogical Society and low and behold, one day, a lady befriended me... She was a professional researcher... After a few years of swapping emails, we struck up a deal. I provide a link to her pages, and she in return would do some of my query work for free. You know the standard lookup, I have a SMITH JONES ANDERSON who may have lived married died in your county or state, can you help??? (grin) It has turned out nicely. About 1 out of 15 become a client for her, and most of them post their information to my site. She is low pressure, that is, she answers their query for free, then let's them know she has a service for a modest price if they need further assistance. In addition, she has provided so many FREE things for my site. Also, it is nice to be able to recommend a professional, someone who, will not RIP them off, or not give them a fair price, or not deliver what is promised... Well, we all been there, done that. On another note, did everyone get the note that Ancestory.com bought out Rootsweb??? And all donors at a certain level will get a free year (paid services included) for our past sponsorships??? I just signed up and got my free subscriptions, so if you don't hear from me, I am busy getting my "monies" worth (yuck yuck yuck)... I would like to have a discussion or any comments on what you think the future of rootsweb will be? All my sites are on Rootsweb.
