    1. [WIGEN-L] Ancestry's problems
    2. Debie & Joe
    3. Ancestry has more problems then just the marriages being wrong. I have brought it to their attention, but it appears they will do nothing to let the researcher know of it and in the end, it is going to confuse alot of people. The problem is with the birth indexes for Sheboygan & St. Croix Counties. When the state placed them on microfiche, an error was made and all of Sheboygan's births were listed as St. Croix county and vice versa. It is known at the state and also at the state library. Evidently Ancestry didn't know, so I wrote to them, explained the whole thing, told them they could contact Wisconsin Dept. of Vital records to confirm or check my website which has all of the births from the county level. I received no response. I then located a phone number for Ancestry and called them to explain to a real person. The response I received was and I quote "Well, that is what genealogy is all about". I didn't expect them to change the county names on all entries, but I did expect and still do feel a letter should be posted on their website explaining this to their researchers. I have already had one researcher come to Sheboygan looking for a surname that was found under Ancestry's births that should have been looking in St. Croix. There will be no telling how many people end up confused in the long run. Debie

    1. [WIGEN-L] dates
    2. Shari Milks
    3. The very early dates for Wisconsin, i.e. 1803, 1822, etc are to designate dates that are unknown, just that they are in the 1800's as opposed to the 1900's. They also used 99 for the unknown days. Shari Milks, Manitowoc

    2. Deana Hipke
    3. > Just a reminder-the WI Pre-1907 Marriage Index does not include all > counties. A warning about the accuracy of the Ancestry.com index: I looked up some known relatives today just for the fun of it, and ALL the dates were incorrect for those married between 1900 and 1906 (5 or 6 from my line). Instead of 1903, they listed 1803, etc. Highly unlikely there would be records for Wisconsin that early (statehood came in 1848) and highly misleading for someone who might not know better! Looks like someone slipped and mistyped all those 9s as 8s.

    3. Just a reminder-the WI Pre-1907 Marriage Index does not include all counties. This index includes the counties Adams thru Price. 1. [WIGEN-L] Wisconsin Resource
    2. Paula Vaughan
    3. I found a resource (that is new to me) and thought I might share it with the lists. It is "Polk's Wisconsin State Gazetteer and Business Directory-1924-25" by R. L. Polk & Co. Publishers, 431 Howard Street, Detroit, WI Ii found this book at the Neenah Wisconsin Library. This is for the entire state of Wisconsin. It is set up like most city directories, but the listings are set up first alphabetical by City and then under each city it lists alphabeticaly all businesses from that city. In the back of the directory it lists all businesses by alpha. Found this interesting as it looks like it lists those who really didn't have a "business" building, but may have done a certain type of work on the side. I also was surprised to see the very small towns also listed. The listings also gives a info on the town/city itself. Found my husband's grandfather listed as an upholsterer. 1. [WIGEN-L] County activities for this past week
    2. Nance Sampson
    3. It was a slower week for the counties that I cover this past week -- life was too busy! But here's what happened... Burnett County has a new cemetery added to it's pages, that being Viola Lake Cemetery. This information was contributed by Audrey Garlie, a member of the Burnett County Historical Society. We would also like to donate this to the USGenWeb's Tombstone project for Wisconsin too. (Tina :~) ) http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiburnet/viola.htm For Barron County a few things happened, such as: The History of City of Barron was put online, complete with photos. This history was donated by Linda Mott -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibarron/barronhistory.htm New Family Histories for this week include: Henry W. Bringman family - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibarron/henrywbringman.htm Bert Gallop family - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibarron/bertgallop.htm August Gilson family - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibarron/augustgilson.htm Chet Goodspeed family - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibarron/chetgoodspeed.htm Lars Larson family -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibarron/larslarson.htm These family histories are from the book "A Journey Through Barronett, 1878 - 1978" and are used with the permission of its three authors. My special thanks go to them! And there's many more family histories to go! (some have some great photos with them) On our Surname page, the Gathright/Gathwright surname was added, along with the link to the contributors website on her family research. That's it for this past week. I hope you all had a great week too. -- Nance mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net

    1. [WIGEN-L] Thanks
    2. Nance Sampson
    3. My thanks to all of you for your help and advice on the Peloquin researcher. I did do some research before asking my question yesterday. By searching in the USGenWeb Archives, I did find some Peloquin families in the land records for Chippewa Co. And by searching through the pre-1907 Wisconsin Death Index on Ancestry.com, I found there were Peloquin's in other counties of the state, but none in any of the five counties that I covered. This is why I was so confused -- I couldn't figure out if he was trying to pinpoint one county, or what? I also had suspicions that he might have contacted other county coordinators too. Anyway, just wanted you all to know that I appreciate your help, and that I think it's great to have you all to lean on. Hopefully I can be of help to some of you in the future too. Have a super weekend everyone! -- Nance mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net
