Tina or Holly, could you please let Maggie know. I have been unable to do anything with the tombstone project in Ohio for two weeks. First my ISP dumped all the photo attachments people sent me, now this. It is getting very old. Will let you know when I am back online to stay. Shari posted pretty good suggestions.... the most important thing is to have something right at the top of every page that identifies your site with at least a link to the main page... not tucked away at the bottom where it may not be noticed. It is even better to give the actual url for the page itself. If you make that url an active link as well, it can also be used to break out of a frame. This is the simplest, least technical way to handle it and will manage for any links coming to your pages from other sites as well as be there for those who print it out. It is a better identifier if this part of the information is at the top of your page. Any *statements* may be better placed at or near the bottom along with your usual page endings. >Any help would be appreciated. 1. [WIGEN-L] Our Sites
    2. Shari Milks
    3. One of my volunteers makes web pages for a living. She was the one who found the server of the pay per view site, and here are some suggestions she made. I see a number of problems here. As far as the break out of frames script..... We could put the link to break out of frames on our pages, but it is very likely he has a counter script that allows us NOT to break out of his frames. Without a subscription I am not able to tell if in fact he has this script running. It is entirely possible that our preventative measures may have no affect on his efforts to take our information. As far as disclaimers/words on page..... What Debbie Barrett has on her site, is not quite right. The "work" is copywritten, that is... "how it is presented", but the data itself is not. The way the statement is written, she claims it is all hers, when in fact it is not. What I suggest we do is two fold. 1) add to our disclaimer page the fact that the material presented here is free and offered through the efforts of volunteers. (and put whatever else we want to say about other peoples frame sets.) 2) As we are working on the pages, add the actual url to all of the pages. This is something I had thought of doing, right after we redid the site. The main purpose I originally thought was if someone printed out the page, they knew exactly where it came from if they wanted to go back and check at a later point in time. Now I guess it has a second purpose. We could have our page bottoms look something like this URL was last updated on 08/12/00 All works copyright © 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 Disclaimer | Privacy Statement These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in this format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons without the permission of Shari Milks

    1. [WIGEN-L] Synopsis of Wednesday's evening chat.
    2. The discussion centered on the topic of page identification and linking, in reference to frames. WI welcomed it's own wonderful volunteers (as SC, I am allowed to gush, <g>), but also visitors from NY, ND, CO, CA, SD, WA, SD, WA, GA, AL, TX, IL, OK, OH, MS, MA, and ME and many other states, so if I missed a state, please forgive me. I very much want to thank Holly Timm, and Joy Fisher, State Coordinator of NY and SD respectively, for leading this discussion. After some visiting and dare I wonder.. cow pies that melt in your mouth and not in your hands, Joy started with introducing a demo page. This page was used to illustrate a frame. http://www.rootsweb.com/~sdgenweb/test/test.html Frames are where one part of the page changes and other part(s) don't. The URL that remains in our browser, is *not* the page that we are actually visiting. Visitors are unable to bookmark, the actual site they are on. A frame places our page(s) *inside* another page, so that its heading is at the top, and [our] URL's do not show. Holly introduced the concept of breakout. Breakout, taking the page out of the frame so it shows by itself. Now on, to the HTML stuff .. TARGET="_top" Thank my lucky stars, someone asked, What does the TARGET="TOP" do? TARGET="_top" breaks you out of frames, if your pages been framed by someone else. http://www.rootsweb.com/~seky/sampleheader.html demonstrates it is clear when someone links to the site from elsewhere. Discussion ensued on notices to be placed on pages to identify not only copyright issues, but also encouraging that our page URL's be prominent, along with identification of the USGenWeb Project affiliation. It was emphasized that breakouts and statements are good but labeling every page will also catch people coming from search engines and various link lists that link direct to the data pages. Meta Tags -- Meta Tags are only used for search engine identification and such, doesn't have anything to do with frames. Meta tags have a reload function that can automatically load or reload a page. Meta Tags help some search engines index your site for keywords. Different HTML editors were discussed and the global search and replace features were mentioned for ease in updating pages. Arachnopilia, Front Page, NoteTab Pro, and Homesite - http://www.allaire.com/download Server Side Include files were mentioned. What is server-side include?? <Tina raises her hand.. !!>.. Server side include is a file that that is called into other files.., in other words do it once, change it once. Gotta love it <g>. That is my take. For a more techie talk on Server Side Includes, come to #htmlhelp Sunday (6:30 AM or 11:30 AM Eastern time) We were reminded to use care when linking to other sites, and to always credit appropriately, the source of the site and the material. Joy, jfisher@ucla.edu and Holly, hollyft@bright.net , will supply anyone who wants -- instructions and code for dealing with frames and protecting our pages.
