    3. Tina Gal, OK, we have the following projects going, are there any I've missed? And what are the deadlines so that I can properly work up an effective worry: Rita - Oconto County *County Brochure for the Feb. 2-3 GenTech Conference *Thank our contributors page/link *Calendar of events contributions for the county to the state

    3. I don't have time for a calendar or brochures either, I'm in the middle of putting on around 12,000 marriages, which is 24,000 names to match up, check and double check, as well as put online contributed information. I already have a contributors page with email addresses so other researchers can contact the contributors for more information if needed. I also have tons of other info to work on as soon as I get these never-ending marriages done, as well as the census to get online. I'm sorry, but my researchers have to come first. Shari Milks, Manitowoc county coordinator.

    2. Debie & Joe
    3. Hi Tina, I think I missed something here along the way. I was trying to get back to single letter mode from digest and unsubbed from digest before it accepted single letter. Anyway, we have to do brochures and calendars of events for out counties now? I do have a basic Thank you page for both counties, but mainly if someone contributed something to the website, their name, etc. is at the bottom of that page. To be honest, I really don't have the time for a calendar of events and brochures for both counties. I figure anyone who wants to know what is happening and when in my counties, they can go to the chamber of commerce website for detailed info and as for a brochure, I am totally lost in doing this. So any suggestions for me? Debie Blindauer Calumet & Sheboygan

    2. This brochure, and the one for the WIGenWeb Project was in response to the upcoming GenTech 2001 Conference being held in Mesquite Texas, on February 2-3. A group of USGenWeb volunteers will be attending, and are collecting brochures from the State and County GenWebs to be available at the booth. Although brochures are not *mandatory* <g>, this conference will provide an avenue for publicity of USGenWeb and WIGenWeb. Find out about the conference at the GenTech site: http://www.gentech.org/2001brochure/ If you have a brochure, or would like to produce one for this event, please send it along to Holly <hollyft@bright.net>, or I. There will also be a mIRC chat during the day on Saturday, February 3, so those of us that can't attend, can be part of the conference! Stay tuned for details on that! 3. Hi -- I think that Dick and Kelly have done an excellent job on these brochures. I just wish I knew how to do them! I mean, I know how to make brochures in my word processor, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how you all did it and saved it as an html file. Where is my brain? Can anyone give us a little advise on how to do this without having to individually ask for help? Is there a special program that you all use? I'd really like to make a brochure for each of my six counties, but if I can't figure this out pretty quick here, it won't do anyone any good. Please help! I humbly thank all of you geniuses who know how to do this and are willing to help. :~) -- Nance mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net

    3. Another source for finding old place names in Wisconsin, right down to the section number within the county, is the Wisconsin Postal History Society's publication "Wisconsin: It's Territorial and Statehood Post Offices", as nearly every little settlement had a post office, if even for a short while. This postal history guide, an old county map, and a county history can identify nearly all old place names and locations. Perhaps this is something each county coordinator needs to consider--creating a page with old place names, modern day equivavlents if the place name changed, a place where queries can be left and answered, place name data donated, etc. It's on my growing 'to-do' list for Adams County <G> For the sake of ideas, I worked on a place name page for the Wood County pages at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/history/zipcode.txt Joan Benner Adams County Coordinator

    3. My feelings on a list of city/changes is that they should be on each county site. I already have a list of county towns and a list for the whole state of towns and the county they are in taken from the 1895 map all right on my site. If these kinds of lists were on each county site, the researcher could find that information without having to leave the site which makes it easier and more convenient for the researcher. I think an index is an excellent idea. So much of rural Wisconsin uses township names or physical features to give a location that don't appear on any map. I can think of several examples in Columbia Co. so I imagine statewide there must be hundreds. I need to address this more thoroughly on my site and perhaps we could do something at the state level too. Nothing elaborate is necessary, just a simple two column list of what the place was/is called and in what county it can be found. The CCs could contribute the names. Of course, this makes work for someone (sorry!). I just had a baby and he's a good excuse for not having time to do anything (except feed, change, rock...repeat). So I guess it is up to the rest of you, if you think such a list would help people locate the information they need more easily, please speak up. Thanks! 3. HI! Just caught the note that someone couldn't find information on Grand Rapids, WoodCo, WI... I have Grand Rapids links listed on the WoodCoWI site under cities, under the history, and under geography. Grand Rapids History: http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/mcm/history/shorthistory.html http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/mcm/history/shorthistory.html Cities sorted by town: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/geography/city-c.htm Cities sorted by township http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/geography/city-t.htm Demographics for WoodCoWI: http://www.doa.state.wi.us/dhir/boir/demographic/geocodes_mcd.asp?dcode=00372 Then, I went to the WoodCoWI archives and typed in Grand Rapids, and got 42 hits under the state of WI and 11 under WoodCoWI... http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wi/wood/wood.htm I think part of the problem is, even if we have the information up, unless people come to our sites and look, they won't find it... I find people are NOT using the resources available and personally am stumped as to why! I got three queries today stating they were at a deadend and what could they do. Ten minutes later, doing the same thing, a search on the webpages using the Archives, I had births, deaths, cemeteries, etc... I just don't get it??? But, it really took me by surprise that a fellow CC didn't think to go to the USGenWeb site to find the information, or went there and couldn't find it. I am not putting the person down at all, just pointing out that perhaps we need to find a better way to do business??? I used to have this listing of WI cities linked on my main pages, but took it down as I didn't have time to update to the new look yet: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/WisConsin/wicities.htm We could add all the obsolete cities listed in the COW book and then have a main link to WI pages, and the county coordinators could link it to their pages if they so desired... What do you think??? I am willing to donate the information from my pages... I am listing all the current townships, villages, cities, etc., as well as places known by the locals that aren't really any of the above and don't appear on most maps. In addition to that, I will include any "also known as" or former names for any places that I know of. As far as doing this on a statewide basis, there is a project that I have wanted to do for some time, and that is create an index to _The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names_ by Robert Gard and L.G. 1. [WIGEN-L] Lets Celebrate Wisconsin!
    2. Tonight, perhaps with groans from many of you <VBG>.. I am announcing the Thank You Page! It is an attempt to give you all a state avenue to thank contributors to your county pages! The groans come into play with the sentiment on the page.. give me a break, I couldn't resist waxing a tad poetic. I will link to each of your *thank you* pages, just send me the URLs! I think it is an awesome way to acknowledge all of the many volunteers that contribute "quietly" to our pages. And with this note, I also want to establish a "My County is doing something terrific" or "My County is celebrating" topic! I will work collectively with all of you or individually with you, if you prefer, to promote the terrific resources, volunteers, and history of your counties, that you host and promote on a daily basis. Lets Celebrate Wisconsin! The Thank You page is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/thanks.htm and please be sure to add any of your county events at http://resources.rootsweb.com/~calendar/cgi-bin/calendar.cgi?calname=WIGenWeb_ Project Tina

    1. [WIGEN-L] City name changes
    2. Lori/Todd
    3. Hi all, my name is Lori & I coordinate the Columbia County site. I came across a problem, or maybe it isn't a problem after all. I recently got my hands on my grandparents' marriage certificate (original document, yipee!). They were married in 1913 in Grand Rapids, Wisconsin. I was at my mom's on Christmas Day when I found the certificate in some old papers (no where near a computer) so we all (brothers/sisters) started looking for Grand Rapids on a modern Wisconsin map...and could not find it. Well, I knew I could find it once I returned to my computer using GNIS...wrong, it's not there either. So I went to the 1895 map link on the WIGenWeb page and finally found it and put together that Grand Rapids is Wisconsin Rapids (which we thought all along but had to confirm it). Which leads to my problem, Kilbourn City. Kilbourn City is a village in Columbia County that changed its name in the 1930s. After my Grand Rapids experience, I began to wonder if people are experiencing the same trouble trying to locate Kilbourn. Looking back at the queries posted for my county, I could not find a Kilbourn question, but I know I've received one or two in the 2 1/2 years I've been working on the site. Kind of a low turn out for a place that has been around since the 1850s. What I am pondering is, is there some way to make finding Grand Rapids & Kilbourn City (and other places like them) easier? Do we need to? Just looking for some ideas/thoughts. Thanks! Lori Korotko Columbia County Coordinator WIGenWeb/USGenWeb Project www.rootsweb.com./~wicolumb/wicolumb.htm
