Tina, The changes you propose are fine with me, and quarterly roll calls/visits to our sites shouldn't be a problem. What about the suggestion of exchanging phone numbers/addresses? As long as they were not publicly posted and were only for your use, no problem, and would be one more avenue of communication. Your comments on charging are fair and reflect the current bylaws. Hi all.. I have spent this evening (TGIF!) reading back over all that you all have said, and what I have said.. boy, we certainly can discuss when provoked, that is a good thing! My non-responsive CC note which began it, has lent itself to some other topics, and personally, I am pleased that they are being raised. First, the Non-responsiveness of CC's: Many of you agree with my approach, but perhaps not my patience... let me explain, and try not to stir the pot, yet again. One of the most basic things that struck me a year ago when you elected me as SC, was that WI was a State that worked. Each of you bring what you can, not only to your county pages, but I got the sense very early on, that you all care very much about what you do and your interaction with each other, with visitors, and with contributors. I have seen that thoughtfulness in even the most tense situations that have been addressed. I admire that, and thank you for it. But, quite honestly, that commitent makes my job much more difficult. I propose, having read all you have said on the topic of non- responsive CC's: 1. State Coordinator will conduct a roll call of all County Coordinators on a quarterly basis. 2. State Coordinator will visit all sites on a quarterly basis, and work with CC's with any issues. It will be the responsibility of both the CC and State Coordinator to communicate areas of concern as it relates to the USGenWeb Project bylaws and WIGenWeb Project Guidelines. http://www.usgenweb.org/official/bylaws.html and http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer.html respectively. 3. If after 6 months (2 roll calls), the County Coordinator has either not responded to roll call, or made an effort to work with the SC, ASC, Web mistress, or other County Coordinator(s), as demonstrated with cc of intent to State Coordinator, the county will be placed up for adoption. I invite you all to comment, and poke holes in my logic .. and once consensus is arrived at I would like to vote on addition to the WIGenWeb Volunteer Page http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer.html Tina

I was very happy to see it, she looked up some cemetery records for me in Rusk County before her death. She was a very kind and helpful person and deserves the recognition you are giving her, I'm sure she would love to see that she is remembered. Thank you, Mary Silvernail
Mel, I just found this email and realized that I forgot to pass it on to all our Mailing List people who are looking for their Scandanavian ancestors... It was good of you to pass it on, and someday, when I get time, I will have to check for my elusive JOHNSON... There are a couple of chapters devoted to Iowa and Wisconsin... Also, I put it up on our Ethnic pages at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/WLHN/cultural/ethnic.html More later, and thank again... Thanks MAK for answering back. Just got back online....And excellent answer it was. <g> Just one thing to say to all - Please put that link up for Wisconsin Migrations. And not just because I can the Coordinator - BUT - last time I received STATS for WI we were in 17th place in the states. Are WE gonna let this happen? Heck no - WE need to put our great state in 1ST place!!!! So that means lots of work and lots of additions to the site. Please help - we gotta make that COW Number 1......... We'll not only Celebrate Wisconsin but our Migratory Information as well. http://www.jansdigs.com/Migrations/migrations.html All your sites should be linked to the Wisconsin site - if you see an error please let me know so that I can update my sites or have the coordinator do it ASAP. Thanks, Jan
Hi Cilla, You don't need to know about WHLN unless you want to. I believe Jan was only asking that if your county was placed for adoption that she had wanted to adopt it. I believe this came up as no one has heard from you in many months. When roll call has been asked for, meaning the State Coordinator has asked each county coordinator to respond, she has not heard from you. I also believe she has been trying to e-mail you privately to ask if everything was alright and how you were doing with your county and again received no response. It was being assumed that you were giving up as being the coordinator for Winnebago county, Wisconsin because no one heard from you and because you hadn't updated graphics, etc. on your website. Tim, You got me all excited and then I noticed there is a Buena Vista in Richland as well as Portage (see my sad face?) BTW, this is a great site. Hi all, There are many different genealogy and history sites on the web... WLHN stands for Wisconsin Local History Network. Our mission over there is to provide the history of Wisconsin by county. I happen to have Wood and Portage, of course, in addition to Adams, LaFayette, and Juneau. I asked once before that counties link to these sites, as we have links to all the WIGenWeb sites linked... The main site is at: http://www.wlhn.org/ Also, there is ALHN American Local History Network, which WI detached from, and then another group started WI up again, don't ask (grin)... And I happen to have Wood and Portage, of course, in addition to Adams, LaFayette, and Juneau. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/state/WI_index.html Now if that isn't confusing enough, there is also AHGP American History Genealogy Project, yup, I have the same five counties... http://www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/state1/index.html And another site that you may or may not be aware of that is growing is the Migration site at: http://www.jansdigs.com/Migrations/migrations.html Hope this answers the questions... Hi, I really don't know what WLHN is, sorry. I will have to address that issue if it should ever happen. Cilla On Wednesday, February 14, 2001 9:41 PM, J. Can anyone tell me how to access the mailing list archives. I know I should know this - but am having one of those brain dead days. Jan

I too am working on census and boy that takes all my time. My big mistake was doing name indexes for all the township centennial books, and putting them on line. I get 5-10 requests a day for the references to the names, and typing them out takes most of my time - I do this FREE of course because it is on my page, and I have the books at home. ;-) Shelley
Sure, Debie, I can see how that statement was misleading. However if people know you do something for free, you will get more requests for information than there are hours in a day. However, when you charge for something, only those who are truly interested will want your services. And as I said, I do free work several hours a day! I myself have hired researchers when I needed to - no problems. Shelley
The charging issue really seems to be hot. As for people taking information from the mailing list and emailing them with an offer, unfortunately, that is life. I really don't have a problem with it, as the people being solicited have a choice NOT to pay the fee (BUYER BEWARE). I am a capitalist at heart. (grin) Also, I will refer them to the local professional researchers or Genealogical Society if their requests are extensive. That doesn't mean they have to use them. Also, I have to agree with Shelley and Joan, on doing lookups free from your house, GREAT, and look at their sites, WOW, there is a tremendous amount of FREE information... However, if people are asking them to research their family above what is available at their homes, and they are spending their time, money, gas, making and mailing copies, then asking for a few bucks to cover the costs doesn't seem unreasonable. Some of us "Swap" favors, too. Again, (sorry Tina), all those individuals who send requests looking for all SMITHs... Well, I would happily xerox the entire thousand page index of SMITH if they are willing to pay the cost... But NOT out of MY pocket (grin)... There is an economical side to FREE and knowing Shelley and Joan, these people are asking above and beyond what is a reasonable amount of FREEness... As for me, I don't charge or even ask for money, but I JUST DON'T GO THERE. If I am not willing to do it for free (as it is extensive costs to me), then I refer out. It isn't any different though, then asking to cover the costs in my mind. Bet what they ask to "cover costs" is cheaper than a professional... There is no RULE that says that all lookups are FREE or that we as cc's are required to do FREE lookups... The rule is as CCs we provide FREE genealogical information and ways and means for individuals to make queries and post information... It doesn't fall TOTALLY on the shoulders of the cc... See http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer.html Just my thoughts. I've found that the more content on the site, the less time a cc needs to spend doing lookups. If anyone would like to see what a genealogical website should look like, feel free to browse my site, but be prepared to spend some time. Shari Milks, cc Manitowoc county.
To all who are putting the pre-1907 marriage index on their sites, I received an email from a researcher who had gotten the bride's name and numbers from the index on Ancestry. He then wrote the state to obtain the record and was told that they needed the husbands name too in order to send the record. Without it, they could do nothing. Shari Milks, cc Manitowoc county.
Tina- You had asked the CC about specific counties and if we other CC have had contact etc. with any of the ones you listed. As you know I personally had tried to contact the Winnebago County Coordinator numerous times. In each of the emails I offered information for the site or help to her without a response. Since I live in Winnebago County I thought I would offer the CC help. I wouldn't have even cared if the CC emailed and said thanks for your offer or I received your information but can not use it, but I did not get one response. I have had members of the Winnebagoland Genealogy Society also email this CC without any responses. SO after emailing over a period of time (6-9 months) I just gave up. This is the county which I have also received several complaints about. I don't normally put this information on a mail list for all to see but you asked. Shelley, I don't want to start a war here, most likely will, but I have a question to ask. You stated in your last letter you don't have either the time or the money to do all that free. My question is, if you don't have the time, how does being paid for it suddenly give you the time? I am a very busy woman also, as I am sure most of us here are, but when I don't have the time, then that is the case and no amount of money will make me have the time. As I said, I don't want to start a war, just was wondering how time could be bought with money? Have a great day, Debie Blindauer Sheboygan & Calumet Counties
