Hi all, Tried to write this yesterday, but didn't see it posted. All of the counties that are hosted on Rootsweb should be back up and running again. I am able to get into my FTP sites, so I think that the rest of you should be able to as well. The only issue I have left is seeing what I post here "transmitted" to all of you. P, Boy that is a toughie, as he is digging for a needle in a haystack. Here is a great reference which he might want to check out ??? http://www.accessgenealogy.com/bios/scandinavian/ Also, he might want to check with the Polk Library and UW-O Archives in Oshkosh, WI, for immigration papers. Here is what is available there: http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/archives/arcnet/oshkosh.html http://www.uwosh.edu/archives/ Hope this helps. Not to insult anyone, but have been getting requests from people on how I am searching the internet. Usually I use yahoo... so I got this by going to http://www.yahoo.com and typing in Wisconsin Archives in the search engine, and scrolling down... I tried JOHANSEN and got 24 pages of uselessness (grin). Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. I am not related to nor have any additional information on these surnames... R/S MAK ps Tina, the USGenConnect Boards are still down, as are the rootsweb search engines, so while pages are up, not all is well at rootsweb-land... --- WIGEN-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > ATTACHMENT part 4 message/rfc822 > Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 14:47:40 -0600 > From: Priscilla Baier <cilla@execpc.com> > To: WIGEN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [WIGEN-L] FW: Peder Myre [Johansen] - Helgeland to America [maybe > to Menasha, Winnebago Wisc???] > > Hi, > Does anyone have any hints for this gentleman? Hi Arne, Your Winnebago query was posted to the Wis County Coordinators list for additional assistance. I would suggest looking in the 1880 and 1900 Winnebago County WI census for him if you haven't already done that. Possible names he may have taken: Peder/Peter Myre / Peder Myhre / Peder Johanssen / Peder Johnson or similar spellings. Local/county newspapers may have some information too. Or a look in the county records could tell if he married there or had children born there. I see that the county has a lookup volunteer with an index to the marriage records: ------------------------------------ Index to Marriage Records for Winnebago County, Wisconsin , Volunteer: Cherie Pennau <cheriep@new.rr.com> She has purchased two volume set, the years are Vol 1. 1848-1874, Vol 2. 1875-1891and volume 3 1892-1902. Winnebago County Death index volume 1 1842-1897. This also would include the information as to what volume, and page the document would be in at the courthouse. ---------------------------------------------------------- If you don't find him in Winnebago, widen your search to nearby counties. I have a friend in Soknedal, Norway who has been looking for descendants of a cousin who went to Wisconsin in 1914. After 4-5 years my friend finally found someone who lived in the town which had been the cousin's destination at emigration -- someone willing to go look up the old local newspapers in the library and was able to find out what happened to her (who she married, etc). So, don't give up if you don't find him right away. I see you're in Lebanon, Ohio. You probably have an LDS History Center in the area, but you're not too many hours from Ft. Wayne, IN -- which has one of the greatest genealogy libraries in the country. They have all the census records from every state and county on microfilm. Here's a link to their web site: http://www.acpl.lib.in.us/genealogy/index1.html Good luck with your search! Cilla, He has done all the right things in the information he has found below. According to the bygdebok information, he left for America in 1880 and was still there in 1908 (someone in the family probably received a letter from him at that time - Norwegian families often kept those letters ... even till today). He may be listed in the 1880 and 1900 census. Possible names he may have taken: Peder/Peter Myre / Peder Myhre / Peder Johanssen / Peder Johnson. Or a look in the county records could tell if he married there. Have you passed the information along to your lookup volunteer with the marriage records? Or suggested to him that he do that? Where did you post his information? I couldn't find it on the Winnebago web site to respond to it there. Since I can't look them up separate right now, I thought I would send them here. Sorry to have to send this to everyone as there are only a select few counties involved. I will say up front, None of these are mine or belong to anyone I know. I was simply searching and came across them and thought in case the CC was interested they could check it out. I got this on one of the other lists so thought I would pass it along. Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased performance and reliability for future growth. The down time will be about 24 hours. If you do not receive any postings during this time do not worry, all will be back up and running soon. My email is: makkuehl@yahoo.com Again, thanks for your vote of confidence.
