Hi all, If Marie is chosen as the new WIGenWeb State Coordinator, I will work with her for a smooth transition of everything entailed, you all have my word on that. I suspect that all could be put in place very quickly with reins of the SC role turned over by the first week of November. I will mostly certainly assist her in any way I can with the transition process. Since the lists were down I have not been receiving any mail from this list so am just checking to see if it is still working. Everyone should have their passwords by now. Voting ends on Oct. 24th at 8 AM CST. Bev. USGenWeb EC
In other news the Rootsweb lists2 is back: "Mail Lists: 2003-10-16 The mailing list server (LISTS2) that has been off-line for maintenance has now been turned back on, and e-mail is being processed. Mail will be processed from the queued mail concurrently with incoming mail. This will mean that not all mail will arrive chronologically until the backlog in the queue has been cleared. It will probably take the better part of the day to get mail from the queues to processing and then depending on the traffic to your ISP further time to get delivered. We did have difficulties with a small number of lists that has meant that these lists are not currently operational and will not be until we have manually checked and fixed any outstanding issues. A list is not currently available." Addendum on that - from Andrew - listmaster: * 77 lists are not operational and will need to be manually fixed, though we still need to grab data from an older backup * if you are upset/grumpy/narky/..., that is nice * if you are an admin for one of the lists you can email me, however I will be emailing you when I have further information. * mail sent to these lists ends up in my mailbox <sigh>, it isn't lost There are 6 county lists in AL, SD, MT, MO, GA and ID and a bunch of surname lists. Tim
I've not seen anything on this list concerning this so here you go, FWIW: I thought this would be working my now but since it isn't --- Something you might find helpful: Per Rootsweb: Mail Lists: 2003-10-09 One of our mailing lists servers (lists2) has been taken offline for maintenance. Any unprocessed mail will be distributed after the server is brought back online. ================================== To find out if the list you are not receiving mail is on this server - after you open a piece of mail from such a list select the blah, blah, blah function of your email client - and you should see something like this: Received: from lists2.rootsweb.com (lists2.rootsweb.com [207.40.200.39]) Tim

I was voted on for ASC - mainly I think because we had no SC or ASC at the time - again like Anne, if memory serves me correctly. Unless a state has rules to that effect - traditionally ASCs have been appointed by the SC - until they are replaced or resign. Since ideally the SC/ASC should work as a team, it makes sense that the SC/ASC be able to get along with each other - thus the appointment by the SC. Its rather hard to pull as a team if one or the other pull in opposite directions. Tim
Good morning! R. Marie: Thanks so much for the answers to the questions I asked ... I know exactly where you stand on those issues now and I am glad you cleared up a few of my questions regarding our websites, etc. Sounds like I can still be as independent as ever and comply with your outlined suggestions for what should be included in a website by the CC.... they actually sound simple and probably most of us are doing them currently. And your ideas on new CC's might just get a few more counties adopted by "new-kids-on-the-block" like I was a few years back -- Marsha can vouch for how "green" I was.... LOL.... "html?" Anyone: Bring me up to speed on one question: do we vote on an ASC or are they appointed? I didn't see an option to vote on one at the poll this morning.... so I assume they are appointed for the same duration the SC term is? I thought I voted on one in the past - (Tim?) but then it could just be another "senior moment" in my memory... <grin> Makes sense though that the SC would appoint the ASC seeing they would work so closely and have a lot of the same ideas.... Thanks! Anne Shawano CC

You will all receive your passwords and the URL soon. Larry was delayed a bit in IN and is now able to get the data out. Once again the dates for the run off are from today to Oct. 24th at 8 AM CST. Bev.
Larry has had a problem on his end and hopefully we will soon be getting everything straightened out and ready to go forward. Sorry for the time lapse here. Hi, Everyone - Some of you may know that three of your WI fellow CCs, Marcia Kuehl, Marie Mickalunas, and Tina Vickery, have been accepted as members of the Election Committee. The AB confirmed the new members today. However, because all three are voters and/or candidates in the current WIGenWeb SC election being conducted by the EC, they have been notified that they will not be subbed to the EC List, or participate in any Election Committee matters until the conclusion of the WI election. Be happy to answer any questions. Bev will probably be returning tomorrow. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be with you for a short while. Ellen Pack Chair, Election Committee
I'm a little confused about who is answering questions here. Is R.M. Stevens <[email protected]> the same person as Marie Mickalunas <[email protected]> ? Thanks, Linda -----Original Message----- From: "R.M. Stevens" <[email protected]> Sent: Oct 12, 2003 9:35 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [WIGEN-L] Answer to Question About County Sites This is a question asked by Anne. 4) Being a VERY independent person, I like the CC's ability to control their own project sites with minimum rules/supervision -- standard logo, links to US GenWeb, etc. are acceptable ... What minimum will you suggest that each site will be required to have or not have? We have requirements set forth by both the US GenWeb project and the WI GenWeb project. I believe these are: * All web sites shall include prominent display of The USGenWeb Project logo on the home page. * Every page must have a pointer to the Wisconsin State Page. * Every county must provide a query page. * Every page must provide some kind of resource information for county. * The WIGenWeb Project has designated a color series of logos or banners to identify the WIGenWeb Project. The design is mandatory on the main page of each WI County belonging to WIGenWeb * Listings of research materials and/or services which may be for sale/hire shall not be on the main web page for the site * Perform periodic reviews of local-level project web sites to ensure compliance with The USGenWeb Project/XXGenWeb Project established guidelines/standards. * Removal of any links to web sites which fail to meet The USGenWeb Project/XXGenWeb Project established guidelines/standards. One of the first things we should do would be to review these requirements, and make sure we understand what they are saying. We should verify we want to continue with all existing WI GenWeb project requirements, or we should make changes where necessary. I'd like to try to get us going (as a state) on getting these things established ASAP. I want to state it would be the County Coordinators who would decide what would be required of all WI GenWeb sites; it wouldn't be me. I'd be there to make sure things agreed upon by the CCs were actually done. I would like to see simple modifications to make our web sites user-friendly to all researchers, including people with disabilities, as an increasingly large percentage of our researchers are homebound or elderly. Our sites shouldn't be so high-tech that people with older machines and browsers can't view them correctly. Conversely, our sites shouldn't be so out-of-date that they are optimal for 14K connection speeds. We need to continuously improve our sites, always keeping the users of our sites in the forefront of whatever we do. Static sites are a thing of the past, and our users have the right to expect our sites will continue to grow as our project grows. I personally have a lot of ideas on what I'd like to see our Wisconsin sites look like. However, when it came time to vote (as we would), I would get only one vote. I don't see the SC position as a dictatorship. It won't work that way. However, we won't grow if we don't have leadership. I would like to lead people forward in a direction that helps us to produce a collection of sites we can all be proud of. -Marie ==== WIGEN Mailing List ==== Celebrate Wisconsin!
