    1. Re: [WIGEN-L] Suggestion About WIGEN-L List(s)
    2. Tina S Vickery
    3. Marie and all, Quite frankly, I don't want a list that only I post to. Often times when "official" WIGenWeb Project or USGenWeb Project business is posted to WIGEN-L, questions from all of you arise, and a list that only I post to would not be conducive nor amenable to a question, answer and discussion format and most certainly not fully serve the needs of the volunteers. I very much feel that as volunteers of the WIGenWeb Project and the USGenWeb Project, that all of us have a responsibility to not only participate, but to be informed of important information as it pertains to WIGenWeb Project and USGenWeb Project business and to have the ability to respond, ask questions and discuss as we feel so inclined. However, I am not adverse to having a business list (WIGEN-L) that all WIGenWeb Project County Coordinators are subbed to (mandatory) and a WIGEN-DISCUSS (for example), that all are initially subbed to but subscription is not mandatory. Comments all? Tina ----- Original Message ----- From: "R. 1. [WIGEN-L] Suggestion About WIGEN-L List(s)
    2. R. Marie Mickalunas
    3. Tina: I'd like to suggest that the WI GenWeb project have two lists available for the CCs: * One list would be mandatory for all CCs. Only the SC would be able to post to this list, and it would be reserved for communicating official WI GenWeb announcements. Since this list would have very few postings, I think a lot of the CCs would be more likely to read these postings rather than automatically deleting something just because it came from WIGEN-L. * One list would be voluntary for all CCs. This one everyone could post to, and it would be a more informal list. It would be more like what the WIGEN-L is now. This may solve the problem of CCs automatically deleting items sent to the WIGEN-L list, and it would help alleviate a lot of the hostilities we have seen in the past. Marie

    1. [WIGEN-L] DISCUSSION: Basic Requirements
    2. Tina S Vickery
    3. DISCUSSION: Basic Requirements for becoming a WIGenWeb Project County Coordinator. Below I have listed an outline of the very basic requirements to become a WIGenWeb County Coordinator. This is in no way complete and I provide it for discussion and brainstorming purposes only. I will admit that in compiling these I visited many USGenWeb Project State pages, so the ideas aren't all original, but seem to work well in the states I visited. I would like to use these discussions as we go along to not only update our WIGenWeb Project Guidelines pages (by majority vote of WIGenWeb Project volunteers), but to also compile a listing of useful resources to incorporate into a "Volunteers Helping Volunteers" website. Future discussion topics will deal with the "nitty gritty" of the role of State Coordinator, Assistant State Coordinator, County Coordinator, Assistant County Coordinator etc. Please take time to read the outline, and to share thoughts, ideas, comments and resources you may have to expand and improve. Thanks! Tina _____ To be a successful WIGenWeb Project County Coordinator, you will need: A knowledge of, or willingness to learn about the county/area you will be coordinating. A desire and willingness to assist researchers who visit your county website. A basic knowledge or ability to learn HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) page coding and design. A basic knowledge or ability to learn how to FTP (File Transfer Protocol) pages to the server of your choice. Access to reliable server space. There are many "free" servers available. County Coordinators may host their pages on the server of their choice. Time, energy and enthusiasm to devote to your county page.

    2. n.e.w.s.
    3. Hi Tina, Thanks for asking. I have been updating my county sites regularly, and have noted such on each counties' "what's new" page. Thanks for providing links to each of those pages on the state website. Significant additions have been made to the Trempealeau Co. Photo Album where Jim Datta, a new contributor, has been submitting some great wedding photos from the 1800s and early 1900s on an almost daily basis. When I asked him how many photos he has, he said 'around 300!'. Looks like I'll be busy for quite some time! :-) I'm also working on a new look for the Eau Claire Co. site, hoping to find a 'classier cow' look. A sample of what I've been working on can be seen here - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wieaucla/ . (Debbie B., I have long admired the look of your website creations. I hope you don't mind that I copied it a little...well, okay, alot!) Nothing has been set in stone yet, but I'm thinking about it. Nance Tina S Vickery wrote: >Tim, > >I have added to What's New. 1. [WIGEN-L] DISCUSSION: Term of State Coordinator.
    2. Tina S Vickery
    3. DISCUSSION: Term of State Coordinator. One of the recent SC Election issues was the term of the WIGenWeb Project State Coordinator. With this note, I would like to open this discussion in the hopes of updating our WIGenWeb Project Guidelines in respect to this issue. Below I have referenced USGenWeb Project considerations to guide our discussions. Please all take time to read, ask questions, and discuss here on this list what avenue you all would like to take in respect to this issue. Tina (who is going to a kids Halloween party this afternoon -- wish me luck <g>). _____ Considerations when discussing: USGenWeb Project Bylaws: http://www.usgenweb.org/official/bylaws.html "ARTICLE XII. STATE PROJECTS Section 1. Each state shall have a State Coordinator who manages the state website and oversees the state project. In addition, each state shall have an Assistant State Coordinator or other support team in place that can take charge in case the State Coordinator becomes unavailable for a period of 30 days, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Section 2. The state website shall include direct links to the county pages, The USGenWeb Project national website, The USGenWeb Project Archives (Digital Library) at both their own state and the national levels, The USGenWeb Project's Guidelines/Standards for county websites (which includes a link to the Official Project Name/Logo page), The USGenWeb Project Copyright Information page, and the WorldGenWeb Project. Section 3. It shall be the responsibility of each state organization to ensure that the state project is in compliance with the stated bylaws of The USGenWeb Project. Section 4. State Coordinators shall remain subscribed to the State Coordinators mailing list and maintain a current mailing list of all local-level coordinators. State Coordinators shall provide their name, postal address, and phone number to the National Coordinator to be held in strictest confidence and only used in the case of an emergency. Section 5. State projects are empowered to develop/adopt any additional rules/bylaws and guidelines, as appropriate, for their state so long as they do not conflict with these bylaws. State projects shall be highly encouraged to develop and adopt rules/bylaws that cover grievance procedures within the state Section 6. It shall be the responsibility of each state project to periodically review local-level project websites to ensure compliance with The USGenWeb Project/XXGenWeb Project established guidelines/standards. Section 7. The state project shall have the responsibility to remove any links to websites which fail to meet The USGenWeb Project/XXGenWeb Project established guidelines/standards. Section 8. State Coordinators shall be elected to those positions by the local-level coordinators within the state. Those State Coordinators and Assistant State Coordinators in place at the time these bylaws are adopted shall be exempt from election procedures, unless he/she/they are removed, resign, or are unable to perform their duties. Section 9. State Coordinators and Assistant State Coordinators are subject to possible removal by a 2/3 vote of the Advisory Board and a 2/3 vote of the Local Coordinators within the state. A quorum of 75% of the Local Coordinators shall participate in order for the vote to be binding. Section 10. If a State Coordinator is unable to perform his/her duties, the Assistant State Coordinator, or other support team, shall serve until an election can take place within the state. In the case of state projects with more than one Assistant State Coordinator, they shall choose one among themselves to serve in the interim." ___ On-going discussions of the Bylaws Revision Committee: http://home.mchsi.com/~sagitta56/revisions.htm (ARTICLE XI. STATE PROJECTS). When considering the above be mindful that: "These are "first draft" proposed revisions and are subject to further revision by amendment during final review." ___

Our opinions are not welcome here. I wish you success, Tina, I hope some of the thoughts that went across this list, make you stop and think about how you have handled things here. You have a lot of dissatisfied coordinators. And if you think I am out of line, please go ahead and moderate me. I have nothing more to add here, and I'll keep my thoughts to myself from now on.
