    1. Re: [WIGEN-L] Follow-up: Proposed SC and ASC update to WIGenWeb Guidelines
    2. Judy Groh
    3. Questions: 1) Should these Project Guidelines be written as WIGenWeb By-Laws? 2) under election procedures, what is the definition of or rather who all is included in WIGenWeb membership? (ie. county coordinators, co-coordinators, assistants, state coordinator, and ?) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tina S Vickery" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 02 December, 2003 6:51 PM Subject: [WIGEN-L] Follow-up: Proposed SC and ASC update to WIGenWeb Guidelines On October 25, I sent the following: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/WIGEN/2003-10/1067092161 to this list. I heard from very few of you, regarding this issue, and no discussion of it here on this list. At this time, I would like to propose the following as an update to the WIGenWeb Project Guidelines: State Coordinator: The State Coordinator (SC) is the primary administrative officer of WIGenWeb. SC duties include, but are not limited to, oversight and maintenance of the WIGenWeb state web site, recruiting and training new project volunteers, and maintaining the WIGenWeb coordinator's mailing list. The SC has the responsibility and authority to select new County Coordinators in accordance with national and WIGenWeb guidelines, and to replace County Coordinators who fail to comply with WIGenWeb or USGenWeb bylaws, rules, and policies. State Coordinator Election Procedures: An election for the office of WIGenWeb State Coordinator is to be initiated and completed every two years (on odd-numbered years) in the month of October, the term of office commencing November 1st. There is no limit to the number of terms an individual may be elected. The election is to be administered by The USGenWeb Elections Committee. The State Coordinator will be elected by the WIGenWeb Project membership. Each member may cast one vote only (no matter the number of county or topical sites hosted). The winner of the election will be the individual who receives a fraction over 50 percent of the votes cast. If no candidate receives at least a fraction over 50 percent of the vote, then a run-off election will be held between the two individuals with the highest vote totals. The winner of the run-off will be the individual who receives at least a fraction over 50 percent of the votes cast. Assistant State Coordinator: The Assistant State Coordinator (ASC) is selected by the State Coordinator. The ASC is responsible for assisting the SC as needed. The ASC would be called to serve as Acting SC in the event that the elected SC resigns, becomes ill, is on extended vacation, or is unable to meet the SC position requirements. In the event of resignation the ASC shall serve until an election can take place within the state following the State Coordinator Election Procedures. Discussion, suggestions? 3. I also thought that MAK said once this election was over, she would no longer be ASC. Haven't seen any more on that topic either. I would hate to think that after all the acrimony on this list, that we would be sweeping it all under the rug, to continue on with the same old, same old. 3. Tim, I haven't been able to reply until now, sorry for the delay. The obvious answer would be a state historical society. However, you may want to look into giving the documents to the American Antiquarian Society. http://www.americanantiquarian.org/ Michelle Laycock Racine/Kenosha WIGenWeb Tim Stowell <[email protected]> wrote: This week I was contacted by a former Archivist with the University of Georgia Libraries who fully understands the importance of preserving original documents, care and handling thereof. I shared with her how several years ago I had the privilege in the company of my brother, to see, the discovery of the finest known example of a work - that prior to that point only the rare book division of a library in Boston had the only known copy in existance. This book was 'stored' in an open faced dress box in this woman's attic! What a thrill it was to see first hand a booklet published in 1860, in Griffin, only aged by 140 years of storage - in as pristine a condition as one could imagine and to be dumbfounded as to how it was stored. The lady was gracious enough to allow my brother to photocopy this booklet - (the one in Boston too fragile to even photocopy) - to use in his doctoral work along with an original note dated 1849, wherein a woman told her intended that most likely her father would give them a couple of slaves as a dowry. I writing to find out your thoughts on places for persons to contribute original documents that can not only be used for research but will be available for the public at large to view. In the last year or so, I've had delivered to my inbox copies of two really neat original documents - - muster roll of an Illinois unit, names of soldiers, rank, pay, if they had a horse or mule - that served in the Black Hawk War (Crawford County) - today - list of scholars, age, study, number of days attended for the school term in a particular township (yet to be determined which one) for Feb. 1857. Additionally a copy of a note telling of the demise of the instructor in early May of that same year in Dodge Co., WI (Richland County) What I'd like to do is let the contributors know and encourage them to consider donating or loaning these documents to a repository that can perserve them. 2. Tracy Reinhardt
    3. Tim and all, Most Historical Societys have people who know the best way to preserve and store materials, plus often display these materials. The State Historical Society has a staff that just does preservations. Most smaller local historical societies don't have the expertise, but are able to contact their state society for guidance. Also, state societies have a limit to their storage space, and do not accept all donations. Your material needs to be unique, or have a value that would add to their collection. Our State Historical Society came to hold a workshop at our local society one year, and showed the participants how to do their own preservation, including how to de-acidify old papers, and then preserve them. I have created a page on the Fond du Lac website showing the highlights of this talk. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wifonddu/resources/misc/preserve.htm I would contact a state society for advice. tracy reinhardt fond du Lac county

    1. [WIGEN-L] Waushara & Bayfield Updates
    2. Jan Cortez
    3. Over the past week, I have begun typing the portions of the 1890 Portrait & Bio Album of Green Lake, Marquette and Waushara Counties. Waushara now has its history and town histories online. I have just completed "War for the Union" of that book, which is mostly for Green Lake. As it tells in the chapter, apparantly Waushara and Marquette Counties were not forthcoming on their stories of the war, however, I have put it online. If Marquette and Green Lake, do not have this online, feel free to link and/or copy the source to your sites. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwausha/1890bioalbum.html Bayfield County has seen the addition of four more Memories columns, and the addition of many post cards showing the area. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibayfie/photos.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibayfie/BCJMem/BCJMem13aug42.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibayfie/BCJMem/BCJMem20aug42.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibayfie/BCJMem/BCJMem06aug42.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibayfie/BCJMem/BCJMem23jul42.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
