Hi, I just wanted to send a quick email and warn people about SPYing on the internet - My computer kept going slower and slower and bogged down, and sometimes would just FREEZE up - well, I didn't know why - thought I was doing something wrong. It was suggested that I scan for SPYWARE - there were 61 spys on my computer - and most of them were active. I got the SPYWARE NUKER http://www.spywarenuker.com/overture.php and a POP-UP NUKER - both tonight - they were not free but seemed to get rid of the problem - of course after I did that I found ZoneAlarm (below) - rats.... it does all the above does and more... I signed up for a Free 45 day trial with ZoneAlarm - Perhaps now I won't get so much internet garbage coming in and out of my life.... IF it is doing a great job at the end of the trial - then I will purchase it. WOW, just in the last 5 minutes since I installed, it stopped 3 intruders - that is wild. http://www.zonelabs.com/ Thought I would share with you... If you know which product(s) are better, please send me an email... R/S MAK __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! FYI from another mailing list - ---- Original Message ----- From: "Haya Regev" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 09, 2004 1:55 AM Subject: [Fwd: Historic Hebrew Newspapers site] From: Elhanan Adler <[email protected]> Date: 2004/02/09 PM 12:33:42 GMT+05:30 To: [email protected] Subject: Historic Hebrew Newspapers site The Jewish National and University Library, David and Fela Shapell Family Digitization Project, is pleased to announce the opening to the public of the Historic Hebrew Newspapers website at: http://jnul.huji.ac.il/dl/newspapers/ The aim of this site is to provide open access to images of the major titles of the early Hebrew press (19th and early 20th century). These newspapers contain a wealth of primary material on Diaspora and Land of Israel history of the period. Access to them has, until now, been limited to a small number of research libraries which held either the crumbling originals or microfilm copies. The first stage of the project, now completed, contains: Halevanon (1863-1886) 770 issues, approx. 7,200 pages. Hamagid (1856-1903) 2265 issues, approx. 19,500 pages. Havazelet (1863-1911) 1857 issues, approx. 14,200 pages. Each newspaper has indexes by common era date, Jewish calendar date and volume/issue numbers. Partial author and subject access is provided via an index created by Yad Ben-Zvi and computerized by the University of Haifa in the 1980's. This index has now been upgraded by the JNUL to a web version, and enhanced with links to the fulltext of each article. This index is limited, however, to Eretz Israel topics in these three newspapers. The runs of these journals are based primarily on the collection of the JNUL, with missing issues filled in with the help of other institutions and private collectors. A few issues are still missing or partial and we welcome the help of other institutions in filling these gaps (for a list of missing issues see http://jnul.huji.ac.il/dl/newspapers/missing-issues.htm) An additional three titles are currently being prepared for addition to the site: Hazefirah, Hazevi and Hameliz. The site itself is entirely in Hebrew. Technical information: Viewing the newspaper pages themselves requires the use of a special Java TIFF viewer which is downloaded automatically into your browser the first time you view an image. This software does not remain in your computer after you leave the site. The first time you access a newspaper image you will be asked to accept a digital certificate before the image viewer software, viewONE, is able to be used on your computer. Your browser must also be set for Java enabled. This viewer provides enhanced functionality such as the ability to zoom on the images, adjust brightness and print selected sections. Hi Tracy, The NC had sent them out from a private list that he put together and unfortunately some people were missed. If you would like to obtain a copy, you can write to: [email protected] or I would be glad to send you a copy of mine. You can also opt out at this addy. After polling a good deal of members, I have voted yes on using the membership list, which should be much more accurate on email addys. I did receive a good deal of responses, and the majority were very positive about the newsletter. I found that some just want to make sure they have a way to opt out, and also learned that spam filters are catching the newsletter, which needs to be worked out. Actually, I think that it went over well for a first mailing. Obviously there are some glitches, that I'm sure will be worked out in time. Nothing starts out perfect. <g> I would also like to remind you, that this is a USGW Project Newsletter. It was done with the hopes of providing good and helpful information to the many volunteers of this project. If you would like to add an article, or have comment on what you'd like to see, just send the NC, or any AB member a note. Thank you for allowing me to hear your opinions. Hi Tina and List I now have a "What's New" page on the Vilas and Oneida sites. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wivilas/whatsnew.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioneida/whatsnew.html I also started transcribing the history portion of "History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties". Chapter I: is finished. The index of bioghrapies in this book http://www.rootsweb.com/~wivilas/bio.htm was finished last fall and now I have a volunteer who is transcribing those biographies. She has completed 9 this week, links are on the names in the index. Now I am taking a break, my eyes and fingers are sore.
