This weekend a gentleman in Janesville sent me a 600 page plus book series he put together of articles his great-grandmother wrote for a local paper in Crawford County covering the years 1915-1944. He said he sent the copy to another researcher and myself for the work we'd put into providing data for Crawford County researchers. This whole series covers the town of Ferryville. I was flabbergasted to say the least. Tim

    3. Tina, I think that Joan has tried to write to the List Administrator, with no response, I'm assuming, at this point. Actually she has made a very valid point here. We all realize that vital records and out of copyright material is free for the taking, but, in this case, it was out and out copied, down to the spelling errors. 20 people can all have the same newspaper or book, but, if you have it, type it up, and present it to a list or website, and maybe I have the same thing, it doesn't give me the right to go and copy your work. I must type it up for myself in order for it to be my work. I think that in this case, it is a very blatant copyright violation, when one has just copied the material. It does disturb me that RW would think that it was okay to do this. In other words, I could go and copy and paste the portions of the Clark County site into my browser and upload it to my site, as long as its material that is out of copyright. Actually this thought does scare me. Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tina S. 3. The mailing list administrator of the WI Clark County mailing list is not the County Coordinator of the WIGenWeb Clark County site. Many of you do indeed host your county mailing lists hosted by Rootsweb, but your role as list admin does not fall under the auspices of the WIGenWeb Project. 3. Joan and all, It is unfortunate that you were not credited with your transcription of your contribution to the Clark County Message Board. Marcia is correct that I, as WIGenWeb Project State Coordinator, do not have any direct authority, for lack of a better word, of the county mailing lists hosted by Rootsweb. They do not come under the auspies of the USGenWeb/WIGenWeb Project, even if as County Coordinator, you are the Admin. My best advice is to work with the List Administrator, and or Rootsweb to alleviate your concerns. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html As for your concerns about the material we all place on WIGenWeb Project pages, It is the policy of the USGenWeb Project that the copyright of the material presented remains with the contributor. To illustrate this point, the following copyright statement appears on pages I put on- line. I offer it as an example of what I feel portarys a fair statement of the work we and our contributors all do. "Copyright Notice: All files on this site are copyrighted by their creator and/or contributor. They may be linked to but may not be reproduced on another site without specific permission from Tina Vickery [[email protected]] and/or their contributor. Although public information is not in and of itself copyrightable, the format in which they are presented, the notes and comments, etc., are. It is however, quite permissable to print or save the files to a personal computer for personal use ONLY." Tina

    3. Hi Joan, As a mailing list and message board administrator, my first thought would be that something happened and the message did not post like it should have, and by default, the message went back to the list or message board administrator. I don't think there is anyway to block a message going thru unless you would have some sort of block on the posters email. <puzzled> Is it possible that she/he just sent the message on to the list? I have done that on many occasions, but, do add a note that whatever the query was, listers should respond back to the researcher. Lately, I have taken to writing the poster, as when I do that people seem to respond to me instead of the researcher. Argh! Guess, I'm thinking that it could be very innocent, but, I would have thought this person would have written you back. Then again maybe they aren't online. If, in fact, this person some how did this on purpose, I would consider it very tacky and wouldn't post to the message boards any more. I'd just send the info on to the Clark County Coordinator, which is Tina right now, as the site is up for adoption. Just my thoughts on the subject, Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "joan benner" <[email protected]> > Dear Fellow CC's, > > I need some advice, and maybe some encouragement. > > Last night I typed an obit for a Clark Co Civil War veteran from a 1911 > newspaper onto the Clark Co messageboard. After reading your letter, it seems to me that you have had problems with the mailing list admin for Clark county in the past, haven't you? If not, please forgive my memory. Personally I think Tina should step in and say something about this, based on the trouble I believe you have had in the past with this person. If the person is refusing to reply to you and work this out in private and is doing such things, perhaps Tina could find out what her problem is with you and why she does this. Just my thoughts and I hope Tina will step in and assist you with this, Hopefully you can get some form of resolve to this soon, Good Luck, Debie Blindauer Calumet & Sheboygan Counties
