Carl (or Charles in English) is his dad born 1813. I doubt the census information on his (John's) age. My records come from his baptismal record of the Gramenz Church in Germany (LDS Library--permanent loan in Shawano) full name of John Ernest Martin. Also his citizenship papers, Declaration of Int. only-- lists him at 66 years in 1918--back to 1852. It may have been a misunderstanding in translation (German to English) or someone did not know and guessed at his age when giving the information for the census. Concerning the missing children, that is some of them, I know that there are at least 3 who died in infancy or childhood. Two of them (Frederick Wm Otto and Emma Marie) scalded to death from an incident while butchering was going on in the year 1885. I do not think this is your same Emma because she is listed in the church death record as being 6 months old, or maybe this is the wrong Emma--the one at 6 months old--- in the accident? Don't know for sure now. Like you this is not a direct ancester, so did not explore this to a great length. There are probate records (Fond du Lac County). It says they purchased a farm in 1904--dairy farm. Maybe one of these direct ancesters will see this and answer both our questions. Concerning the area and looking up things in this area you will need to check 4 townships records before being complete. Two in Winnebago county--Black Wolf (very common) and Utica (seldom--but worth checking as last resort) Townships. Then two in Fond du Lac County---Friendship (common) and Eldorado (number 3 in my list of look ups) Townships. This area was settled by the Germans from central Pommern (Kries Nuestettin) area, unfortunately this area sits on a county line, making the search a little frustrating at times. If you need more information on this area let me know; grew up in the area so know it rather well. My records say that John Wruck and family moved from Black Wolf (know where that land was--no buildings left now) to Eldorado in 1904. Hope this helps. Thanks for the dates and names will add to my records. Ron
