"Verne" Thornburg, 66, of 871 S. Main St., died Sunday, March 4, 1984, at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born Oct. 27, 1917, in the Town of Empire, to the late Clarence and Mathilda Mittlesteadt Thornburg. One Aug. 5, 1939, he married Margaret Shallow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church here. Mr. Thornburg was employed by Giddings & Lewis Machine Tool Co. for 27 years, retiring on Sept. 2, 1979. He ws instrumental in helping organize the Bear Hockey Team here and was one of the first inductees in the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame on June 21, 1975 at Eagle River. He was active in baseball and was a pitcher on various teams. Survivors include his wife; four sons, William, Richard, Jeffrey and James all of Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Perry (Donna) Minton of North Fond du Lac and Mrs. Darwin (Patricia) Rose of Mount Calvary; and eight grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Larry (Annabelle) Bingen of Fond du Lac, also survives. A sister and brother preceded him in death. Fun! eral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home and at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, where he was a member. The Rev. Alfred Esselman will officiate, and entombment will take place in Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park. Visitation for Mr. Thornburg will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
