He was born in Prussia, July 19, 1830, and came to Calumet, this county, in 1847. From there he came to this city in 1852, and has resided here ever since, and was highly esteemed for the promptness and reliability with which he attended to business, as well as for high social qualities. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock and will be under the charge of the German Lodge of Odd Fellows, of which he was a prominent member. Fond du Lac Daily Commonwealth, Oct. 20, 1883 FOND DU LAC, Oct. 20. - Martin Petrie, the old and well-known proprietor of the Express Line, died yesterday after a protracted illness, aged 53. The funeral occurs to-morrow, and will be conducted by the Odd Fellows, of which order deceased was a prominent member. Milwaukee Sentinel, Oct. 21 1883, p. 2, col. 4 The funeral of Martin Petrie was held Sunday forenoon from his late residence on Arndt street, and was conducted by the German lodge of Odd Fellows of which deceased was an esteemed member. L. Goldstucker officiated at the house, for the Odd Fellows and Charles Lucke at the grave in Rienzi cemetery. The pall bearers were: Franz Lauenstein, George Zeitz, Phillip Erhart, Joseph Wolf and Henry Bloedel, all old friends of the deceased. Fond du Lac Daily Commonwealth, Oct. 22, 1883. After a long illness Martin Petrie died Friday, October 18th, 1883. He was the well known proprietor of the Petrie freight line. Mr. Petrie was a native of Prussia. He came to this city in 1852, where he resided until his death. He was aged 53 years. The funeral was held Sunday forenoon, under charge of the German lodge of Odd Fellows. The vast concourse that followed the remains of Martin Petrie to their last resting place, testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Fond du Lac Journal, Thursday Oct. 25, 1883 Death of Martin Petrie Martin Petrie, a resident of this city since the year 1852, died at his residence on the corner of Arndt and Marquette streets, at about 4:30 Friday afternoon, of a complication of diseases, dropsy being the principal cause of death. The deceased had attained the age of 53 years, and was well known, not only in the city, but the surrounding country. He was known among our merchants as the pioneer in the freight drawing business, and in early days was engaged in making regular weekly trips to Milwaukee, carrying emigrants and freight to and fro. In 1860 he established a line of freight wagons in this city, and up to the day of death controlled several wagons. He was universally esteemed as an upright, conscientious man, and in business and especially the German circles his loss is felt and mourned. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his death, all in comfortable circumstances. He was a member of the German Odd Fellows, and by that order will the obsequies be conducted. The funeral will take place from his late residence Sunday morning at 9 o'clock with interment at Rienzi. Petrie, 39 East Arndt street, a conductor on the North Western railroad, died suddenly at 5:30 Tuesday afternoon at Watertown. His death occurred while he was on duty. The message which came to his family here said that he was taken ill while on his run Tuesday afternoon and that his death occurred in the caboose, before he could be taken to a hospital. Death was due to heart trouble. Mr. Petrie was born in this city sixty-one years ago and has lived here all his life. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Martha Petrie; two sisters, Emma and Nettie; and one brother, William Petrie. The body will lie in state at the Zinke funeral home until 10:30 Friday morning when it will be taken to Masonic Temple. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock that afternoon and burial will be in Rienzi cemetery. Mr. Petrie was a member of Fountain Lodge No. 26, F. and A.M. Fond du Lac Daily Commonwealth, Wednesday, June 30, 1926 DIES SUDDENLY OF HEART DISEASE E.J. Petri, conductor on a switch train on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway was found dead in the caboose of his train at the Northwestern tracks here last Tuesday evening, aged 61 years. Fond du Lac Daily Reporter, Friday July 2, 1926 MARTHA TRAUTFETTER PETRIE, wife of Martin Petrie Death Claims City Pioneer Mrs. Martha Petrie, 89, Resident Here Since Childhood Expires Mrs. Martha Petrie, 89, widow of Martin Petrie, a resident of the city since childhood, died Sunday morning at her home, Marquette and Arndt streets. The deceased was born Oct. 15, 1837, in Germany and came to this city with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Trautfetter, when 8 years of age, residing in the old homestead ever since. Mr. Petrie's death occurred 43 years ago. Surviving the deceased are a son, William of the Petrie Storage and Transfer Line, two daughters, Emma and Nettie, of this city, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the residence. The Rev. A.W. Raabe, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Rienzi Cemetery. WILLIAM PETRIE, son of Martin and Martha Trautfetter Petrie LONG SICKNESS CLAIMS LIFE OF WILLIAM PETRIE Aged Businessman in City Stricken at Home on Hamilton Place W.J. Petrie, pioneer resident and long active in business pursuits, engaged for many years in the trucking and storage industry, died at 2:45 a.m. today at the family residence, 164 Hamilton place. He had been in failing health for the last two years. Mr. Petrie was considered one of the oldest businessmen in his line of endeavor in the state. He had throughout his long service, inaugurated many advancements in the trucking business. Mr. Petrie was born June 28, 1860 in this city, a son of Martin and Martha Petrie. His father started in the trucking business in 1850 and was joined by his son when he was 16 years old. On his retirement he was succeeded by his son, Walter W. Petrie. Mr. Petrie was married Aug. 27, 1884 to Miss Rose Kuicks, who survives, together with the one son, Walter W., one daughter, Mrs. Walter Friedrich of Chicago, and the following grandchildren, Ross Petrie of Miama, Fla., Marcia Petrie of this city and Helen Friedrich of Chicago, two sisters, Miss Emma Petrie and Miss Nettie Petrie of this city. The late business man was active in Masonic circles, being a member of Fountain Lodge 26 F. and A.M., Fond du Lac Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and the Presbyterian Men's club. There will be private funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday from the residence and at 11 o'clock the body will be taken to the Masonic temple, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. by Fountain lodge. Born in Fond du Lac, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Petrie, she had always resided here. Surviving are a sister, Nettie Petrie, with whom she resided, a niece, Mrs. Walter Frederick of Chicago and a nephew, Walter W. Petrie of this city. PETRIE STRICKEN AT 81; RITES ARRANGED Early Resident in City Dies at Home of Daughter in Chicago Mrs. Rose Petrie, 81, widow of W.J. Petrie, a former resident of Fond du Lac and mother of Walter W. Petrie of this city, died Thursday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Friedrichs in Chicago, with whom she had resided for eight years. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kuicks, pioneer grocers, Mrs.Petrie was born Sept. 8, 1862, in Fond du Lac. For many years the Petrie home was at 164 Hamilton Place. Besides her daughter and son, Mrs. Petrie leaves three grandchildren, Mrs. Quinn Martin of Oshkosh, Ross Petrie of Lauderdale, Fla., and Miss Helen Freidrichs of Chicago, and a great-grandson, Marquin Martin of Oshkosh. Mrs. Petrie was a charter member of Unter Uns and also belonged to the Easter Star in this city. The body will be at the Zacherl funeral home Saturday, funeral services to be held there at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, with burial at Rienzi cemetery. A lifelong resident of the city, Miss Petrie was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Petrie. Surviving are a nephew, Walter W. Petrie, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and a niece, Mrs. Walter Friedrich, Chicago. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zacherl funeral home, Louis P. Peeke officiating. PETRIE Walter William Petrie of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., chairman of the board and president of Petrie Storage & Transfer Co. Inc. of Fond du Lac, died Wednesday at the age of 88. He joined Company E. in 1902 and was graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School in 1904 and University of Wisconsin Engineering School in 1910. Mr. Petrie prospected in Minnesota for U.S. Steel and was also employed by LaClade Gas Co. at St. Louis, Mo., until 1911 when he returned to Fond du Lac and joined his father in the family business. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Rotary Club, 50-year member of Elks Lodge 57, a member of Knights of Pythias, chairman of local civil defense and welfare committees for several years. Mr. Petrie served as president of the Fond du Lac Country Club and director of the Fond du Lac Association of Commerce. He was chairman of Fond du Lac County Transportation Office of Civil Defense and head of the local National Recovery Act (NRA) program. Born in the city July 24, 1885, he was the son of William J. and Rose Kuicks Petrie. He married Elizabeth Bechaud July 1, 1911. Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Marcia Martin of Fond du Lac; a son, Ross B. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandsons and a great-grand-daughter. A sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zacherl Funeral Home with the Rev. Lloyd G. DeJong, officiating. Entombment will take place in Rienzi Mausoleum. Petrie, 83, the former Elizabeth "Babe" Bechaud, of 2394 S.W. 28th Ter., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died at 12:15 p.m.. Tuesday at Mercy Medical Center, Oshkosh. She was visiting her grandson when taken ill. Born in Fond du Lac on July 29, 1891, she was the daughter of Adolph G. and Elizabeth Kramer Bechaud. She was graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School. Mrs. Petrie was married on July 1, 1911, in the city and her husband died Dec. 19, 1973. They had lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., since 1954. At the time of her death she was president and board chairman of Petrie Storage and Transfer Co., Inc. She was a member of Deborah Society and First United Presbyterian Church in Fond du Lac. In Fort Lauderdale she was a member of the Garden Club and Woman's Club. Surviving are a son, Ross B. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Marcia martin of Fond du Lac; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Zacherl Funeral Home with the Rev. lloyd G. DeJong officiating. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Rienzi Cemetery. Friends of Mrs. Petrie may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Petrie Martin, 73, 205 Taft St., died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1988, at her home. Mrs. Martin was born Feb. 12, 1915, in Fond du Lac to Walter W. and Elizabeth Bechaud Petrie. Mrs. Martin was a descendent of the Petrie and Bechaud families which arrived in the Fond du Lac area in 1851. She attended school in Fond du Lac, and she attended Mount Mary College and Northwestern University. She was president of Petrie Storage and Transfer until it's sale in 1974. She was a founding member of the Sigma Club of Fond du Lac. Survivors include two sons, Mark of Oshkosh and Quinn of Mequon; four grandchildren, Kimberly and elizabeth of Oshkosh and Quinn and William of Mequon; and a brother Ross Petrie of Oshkosh and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zacherl Funeral Home. The Rev. John K. Setser will officiate. Entombment will be in Rienzi Mausoleum.
