My parents were Fred and Jo, who owned the Commander Bar on 1st Street from 1939 to 1955. My uncle Floyd Gumz had his own band for years and was also part of the Archie Adrian band. I worked at the Retlaw in 1959 and 1960 as a desk clerk, just out of high school. My dad was a bartender there from 1956 to 1960 or 61, I'm not sure which. I would be happy to share any stories I can with you. I do remember shaking hands with Bobby Kennedy when he was stumping for Jack's Presidency. I remember well the old corded callboard. We were the switchboard operator and front desk person all rolled into one. I also recall the room directly behind the lounge itself as it was done up much like a gay nineties ice cream parlor; white wrought iron tables and all. It was an interesting place at that time. I may have some pictures, etc. from that era. I will look for them -- and pick my memory for stories dad may have related to me or that I recall.! I did go back there in the mid 60's as a dinner server in the dining room. That's a whole other set of stories! I will pass on any info I come across.
