    1. [WIFONDDU] Franz Wilhelm SCHUSSMANN
    2. Alison McIntyre
    3. I'm helping my cousin with her family. Her father was Leo George SCHUSSMANN, His parents were Franz Wilhelm SCHUSSMANN and Eva Katrina WAAG. In the 1880 census for Calumet Village on pages 18 and 19 I find the following Schussmann's: In dwelling 147: William Schussmann, 39, his wife Mary and children, Hedwig, Bertha, Ida and Otto. In dwelling 152: Cate Schussmann, 42, (widow of Franz Wilhelm Schussmann), and their children Frank W., Charles, William, Lina, Anna, Richard, Bana, Leo and Maggie. In dwelling 154 I can't read the husband's first name, His wife appears to be Johanna. They are an older couple, he is a retired carpenter. I wonder if they could be Franz and William's parents. Franz and William and the couple in dwelling 154 were all born in Saxony and I know that Franz had a brother in the area. Franz was a cabinet maker and died between about 1876 and 1880. Are there any city directories or other records that would give the older man's first name, and if possible obituaries or other sources for the relationships between the families? I would very much appreciate a look-up or ideas of where I might find the information. Thanks for any help you can give me.

    3. Hansen, Hazel's $270,000 Gift to the Neillsville, WI Public Library in 2006 Clark County Press, Neillsville, WI December 27, 2006, Front page Transcribed by Dolores (Mohr) Kenyon. Teacher wills $270,000 to local library Where there’s a will, there’s a way to help your local library. A Neillsville High School graduate, who went on to a life-time of teaching before her recent death, has demonstrated that notion in no uncertain terms. Before she died, Hazel Hansen named the Neillsville Public Library as a major beneficiary in her will, bequeathing more than a quarter-million dollars to be used as needed. The Neillsville Public Library Board last week gratefully accepted the $270,614 from Hansen’s estate. Hansen died last year in her home state of Washington. Hansen graduated from the Neillsville High School in 1938 and was a school teacher at several schools in Wisconsin before moving to Washington, Library Board President Walter Wetzel said after the Board’s Dec. 21st meeting. During that meeting, Board members formally accepted the gift and voted to place the funds in the Mid-Wisconsin Bank in Neillsville until a decision is made as to how the funds will be spent. Hansen never married and taught schools in Madison and Fond du Lac before moving to Washington where she continued teaching until her retirement, according to Wetzel. Before Hansen died, she willed 30% of her estate to the Neillsville Public Library, Wetzel said, with most of the balance going to libraries in Madison and Fond du Lac. He surmised that her motivation for the substantial gift to the local library was her ties to Neillsville, including likely visits to the library as she was growing up in Neillsville. It was made clear in Hansen’s will, however, that the Library Board could use the funds as they saw fit. “It was a wide-open gift,” Wetzel said. “There are no strings attached.” Wetzel said that the Library Board has, for the past year, been talking about having a retaining wall constructed in the area of the steep grassy knoll on the library’s west side along Hewett Street. He has some ideas of his own as to what library projects would be most beneficial to the community, and he will be talking about those at a later time, said Wetzel, adding that the Board would be open to input from the community. The Library Board will be meeting Feb. 6th for discussion, and possible action, for the potential uses of the funds. Community comment would be welcomed. “This is excellent for the whole community of Neillsville. Everyone should be thankful for the gift,” said Wetzel. Surnames: HEMENWAY CRARY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.fonddulac/3990/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have found my gr grandmother, Carrie HEMENWAY, in Fond Du Lac in 1860 census at 1 yr old but I am looking for information on her parents and her uncle. Salmon HEMENWAY was a farmer in Fond Du Lac in 1855-1860 and possibly later. Lydia Lucretia HEMENWAY nie CRARY, was his wife. They had the following children: Lovinus, Millard, Herbert, Carrie (although Cora on the 1860 census). They also had a son who died in infancy and a daughter Vesta at some point (most likely after 1860). My gr grandmother's brother Albert M. CRARY was involved in the theater in Fond Du Lac in the fall of 1855. He referred to himself as Mell, so there may be something in the paper regarding the theater that year and possibly something with his name on it as he says in his Memoirs that he had a leading part in a few plays. Those plays being "Don Caezer De Bazan," "The Golden Farmer," and "Tootles." Since I found them in the 1860 Census I don't need that info, but I would like to find them in 1870 (which so far I have been unable to find them) to see if they are still in Wisconsin at that time. I would like to see any newspaper clippings, birth and death records, etc.

After further investigation into WI records, I came across Dennis and Mary Ryan of Fond du Lac, born in Ireland and Canada respectively, and their daughter Margaret was born at the same time my great great grandmother was born. I don't know for sure that this is the same person, but if it is, then I'm a descendant of Dennis and Mary Ryan. I would love to compare our information and see if this is a true connection. 1. [WIFONDDU] Three days of ancestry for free
    2. I saw this on another list and tried it out. Use the link below to go to the ancestry site. When you get to the ancestry page, click on the second red box that reads something like "begin today". It will take you to a page to build your family tree. I'm not big on online trees - I just put in a name and then clicked next through the next several tree building pages until it said congratulations you've built your tree. Then went to the top of the page and started searching. (Thought I'd mention that). Anyway, here's the link to get 3 days of ancestry for free: >Access the entire Ancestry.com site for free for three days over the Christmas holiday. http://www.freegenie.net/holiday View census records Census Records & Images, Historic Newspapers, Birth Death & Marriage Records, Ships Passenger Lists, Family & County History Books, Old Yearbooks, City Directories, and more!
