    1. [WIFONDDU] Dutch Immigrant Letters/Dutch in Wisconsin
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mrisseeuw Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.fonddulac/4007/mb.ashx Message Board Post: CALL FOR DUTCH IMMIGRANT LETTERS The Sheboygan County Historical Research Center is in the planning stages for a 2008 conference tentatively titled, "The Dutch-American Experience in Wisconsin: 1840 to the present." In conjunction with this conference we will be publishing a book of immigrant letters representing the Dutch in Wisconsin. We are asking that anyone in possession of letters, written to and from the Netherlands between 1840 and the present, submit them for possible inclusion in this book. We welcome copies of letters in Dutch, and those already transcribed and/or translated. We will provide translation services when necessary. We cannot promise that all letters will be included in this publication, but will consider a second volume if interest warrants. There are other publications that have included a few letters from Wisconsin Dutch immigrants, but we feel there are enough to warrant a publication focusing solely on Wisconsin. We also ask that if anyone in your community is interested in providing background information or being a contact person about the Dutch in your community that you contact the person listed below. There has never been a conference of any sort in the State of Wisconsin focusing on the Dutch community and we hope this will be the catalyst for forming a more cohesive group within the state and to promote more research. If you have letters you are willing to share, or have any questions regarding this publication or the proposed conference, please contact: Mary Risseeuw 922 High Street #2 Madison, WI 53715 Phone: 608-284-6231 E-mail: mrisseeuw@yahoo.com Dank u wel, Mary Risseeuw Member, Board of Directors Sheboygan County Historical Research Center Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The William G. Roberts I'm trying to find more information emigrated to Cambria, Wisconsin, in about 1871. The names of some of his children are: Mary, John, Jane, Griffydd, Catherine, all born in Wales. Thomas, Louise, Mary all born in Wisconsin. William first came to this country in 1847 as a child; stayed about 12 years, married Mary, had a few children and then re-emigrated in 1871. I still have relatives in Wales and they have been helpful in rsearching. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Surnames: Lallier Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.fonddulac/4002.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a few short stories on your Lallier family in Fond du Lac. The Lallier family was very well known while here in Fond du Lac. They hired many young men in town to work on their truck farm. The farm was located on Fourth St Rd, on the east edge of the city along deNevue creek. Both of my grandfathers worked for the Lallier family. My grandfather Bruno Berghandler is listed with the Frank Lallier family in the Wis 1905 census. My grandfather John Reinhardt (and his brother Ed) also worked and boarded with the family when he was a young man. At that time, a young man was still considered under the care of his parent until he reached the age of 21, but this was not something that everyone agreed with or enforced. Especially if a 19 or 20 year old struck out on his own. However, when my grandfather John worked for the Lalliers, his father would take a walk to the Lallier place every payday, to collect his sons wages for himself. In later years my grandfather related that several times, when they saw Charles Reinhardt coming to collect his sons wages, they would alert John, and then tell his father that John was not there, and they had already given John his wages. They thought it was so unfair that Johns father insisted on taking his wages from him. My mom (age 93) also said that Gene Lallier(?) also took up sailboating, and was well known in the area for that. She also thought that the family had another son Kenneth, she thinks. Just wanted to send that along. I would be most interested in knowing anything else about the Lallier family, to post on the Fond du Lac website. I found it interesting to know that they also had the large gardens in France before coming here. tracy reinhardt

The photograph is very nice also! I'm wondering if it wasn't Francois Eugene's son, Eugene, that she was engaged to. He was born about 1852 so 1870s would fit him. I don't have any info. about him in particular. The family settled in Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., KS. What a shame that she died so young and was still one of the longest surviving children in her family.

She said that Louise was so frantic that she cut her red hair and drank cow's blood (which was said to be a cure for TB), but obviously it was not and she died. The odd thing here is that Louise was born in 1873 in Germany and came to Fond du Lac the following year. Maybe my grandmother was getting the names mixed up and meant that Eugene was the father of the Lallier that Louise was engaged to. The Mittelstaedts are pretty non-descript. Fred was a Lutheran mason from Germany, his wife, Caroline was a Polish Catholic. They had 10 children all together, and Louise was the first daughter that lived to be over 15. She died in 1897. Do you have any Lalliers that fit in to the 1870s? I'm not too vain to say that what I was told was not incorrect, but my grandmother was sure that there was an unfullfilled engagement somewhere. I'm attaching a photo of Louise.

I was told that Francois Eugene Lallier married Elizabeth Bouley/Boulay on 3-24-1852 most likely in France before they came over. What can you tell me about Louise Mittelstaedt? I'm not familiar with the Mittelstaedt family. Sorry to hear about her death at such a young age. Are you sure it was Eugene that she was engaged to and not one of his brothers, Francois Jules, Jacques Leon, Louis or Joseph? Just curious! Thanks! I'd be interested in more and be willing to share what little I've gathered about the Lalliers.
