I have a Saloma Sherman (1818-1860) who had a sister Mary Ann Sherman. They were born in Jefferson Co., NY, and came to Fond du Lac Co. before 1850. Salome married Solomon Benedict. Their parents were William Sherman and Salome Calkins. Several of these families moved together from NY to WI, so that's why I ask. I'm trying to find out more about the Shermans.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jEC.2ACE/1302.2 Message Board Post: Mainly my interest is in French-Canadian surnames; I don't have any known connection to the names you are searching. Many people don't realize that certain names, such as MARTIN, GREENWOOD, SNOW, and CHENEY, which sound English, could be French-Canadian. Sometimes due to approximate or exact translation, sometimes due to "re-pronunciation," sometimes a nickname that stuck. Many people named BEAN in New England are probably descended from LEFEBVRE.
