Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jEC.2ACE/712.714 Message Board Post: The correct name was the "Fred Reuping Leather Co." I was raised in Fond du Lac, born there in 1941. My parents, Fred and Jo Gumz owned the Commander Bar on 1st street from 1939 to 1956. We lived above the business and often roller skated past Reupings. Many of the family friends in the forty's and fifty's worked at Reupings. It was a very going business in those days. I honestly don't recall the year it closed but it did indeed exist and prosper.

My parents were Fred and Jo, who owned the Commander Bar on 1st Street from 1939 to 1955. My uncle Floyd Gumz had his own band for years and was also part of the Archie Adrian band. I worked at the Retlaw in 1959 and 1960 as a desk clerk, just out of high school. My dad was a bartender there from 1956 to 1960 or 61, I'm not sure which. I would be happy to share any stories I can with you. I do remember shaking hands with Bobby Kennedy when he was stumping for Jack's Presidency. I remember well the old corded callboard. We were the switchboard operator and front desk person all rolled into one. I also recall the room directly behind the lounge itself as it was done up much like a gay nineties ice cream parlor; white wrought iron tables and all. It was an interesting place at that time. I may have some pictures, etc. from that era. I will look for them -- and pick my memory for stories dad may have related to me or that I recall.! I did go back there in the mid 60's as a dinner server in the dining room. That's a whole other set of stories! I will pass on any info I come across.

My parents owned the Commander Bar just a block away and it was a ritual to go there for dinner frequently. I remember the chicken and dumplings and Loretta Hau was my favorite person there. We grew up above the Commander and so the downtown was our backyard and the merchants and workers were the people we knew best. I'll search my folks old photo albums for any pictures, but they are both deceased so I'm not sure if any exist. Good luck in your quest. If I do find any info I'll pass it on to you.

    3. I am very happy to announce the newest addition to the Fond du Lac website. The Rueping Leather Company was one of the larger employers in Fond du Lac, tracing its origins back to 1854 when the Rueping family settled here. In 1954, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its founding, The Rueping Leather Company published a history book for its employees, and I am fortunate to have been given access to this book for inclusion on the website. I have scanned in the publication page by page, so you can view this publication in its original format. The early pages give a fascinating view into very early Fond du Lac life, with an amazing title page sketch of the original Rueping farmstead (now replaced by Giddings and Lewis buildings). http://www.rootsweb.com/~wifonddu/resources/histories/rueping/rueping.html Stay tuned,........ as I have received several other wonderful donations for the website, to be completed soon. Tracy

    2. Hello, Regarding Rosendale Cemetery, since Springvale looks like it was merged into the Rosendale Cemetery, has anyone thought to look at the Rosendale Cemetery book to see if there is further information? My cousin who lives out there did this several years ago. It has a map with the history of the plots and who purchased them. It is kept in the cemetery office. Good luck, Brian

Springvale Prairie Cemetery - Located in Sec 21 of Springvale Township. This cemetery is cemetery is shown on the plat maps for Springvale township bit if there are burials there, no tombstones have been found except for a broken corner of one. This writer was told that a tombstone had been found there, however, this writer and another person walked every inch of that cemetery twice without finding anything. We were, however shot at by a resident of the house on the corner of Co T & M intersection during our second visit there. We never returned to explore further. ANyone who wishes to search for tombstones is welcome but it is the belief of the writer that all stones were moved to Rosendahl Cemetery. To reach the area, take Hwy 26 south out of Rosendale Village for 3 miles, turn right onto Co M, there is a house on the corner and then woods. The cemetery is in the woods. So, it sounds like this cemetery is no longer in existance. It is sad that these cemeteries seem to disappear! This seems to be a habit among some of the Fond du Lac Co Cemeteries.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jEC.2ACE/1315.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Virginia, I'm definitely interested in finding out more about my Kempf family, as that is one branch that I don't have much information on. . . As far as the Maria Rosina Kempf you mention, I'm not sure. Could you give me more details about when she was born and where, etc.? In looking at what I have, I did find a Rosina Kempf who lived 1853 - 1957 who married a Ferdinand Kolman. This Rosina was the sister of my great-grandfather Daniel Kempf. I also have a Marie Kempf (1913 - ?) who married a Clarence Meyer. This Marie was my grandfather Ray (Remigius) Kempf's sister. Do any of these names sound familier? I do not have ANY information on the brothers or sisters or parents of my g-g-grandfather (John) Adam Kempf (April 4, 1823 - December 4, 1888). So, there may be a connection there. . . . If any of these names coincide with your family, I would love to hear about it! Thanks.
