More old news from the 26 March 1942 edition of the Altoona Tribune: Hearing on Bus Fare Set for Wednesday The Wisconsin Public Service commission has set Wednesday, April 15, as the time for a public hearing in answer to the application of the Eau Claire Transportation Co. for authority to raise its Altoona - Eau Claire bus fare from ten cents to twenty cents for a through ride one way. The fare today is ten cents one way. The hearing will be held in the auditorium of the Eau Claire city hall at 9 o'clock in the morning on April 15. Mayor Fred Gloede announced that the Altoona city attorney, A. H. Shoemaker of Eau Claire, will represent Altoona at the hearing. $5,000,000 Munitions Factory is Rumored The latest news from Washington gives Wisconsin another $5,000,000 munitions factory, and rumor states that the plant will be erected near Eau Claire. Since the story was sent from the capital air castle capitalists have placed the factory north of Eau Claire and south of Chippewa Falls, while other rumors have it that six stories will be added to the present Gillett factory in Eau Claire, and Altoona is to be requisitioned for housing space. The United States Rubber Co., which owns the Gillett factory, has been given some kind of a government order to build or open another munitions factory in Wisconsin, and from this story has grown the story related above. However, Representative Merlin Hull is reported to have stated that Wisconsin will receive another government munitions factory in the near future. ++++++++++++++++++++++ Well, the time is ticking down towards that magical day! Things are getting hectic in this household. I went out and bought many things last January in preparation of making all the gifts this year. Needless to say, I only have one gift done and another one half there! All the rest are glaring at me and I think I'm beginning to hear little voices...little threatening voices saying, "You better get me done in time!"
