>From the 26 March 1942 edition of the Altoona Tribune: Pupils Win at Humbird Contest A group of Altoona high school students took part in the League forensic meet held at Humbird last Friday. Virginia Dull received first place in humourous orations. Eleanor Rieck was given second place for extemporaneous reading, while Neil Woodington placed second in extemporaneous speaking. Others taking part in the meet from Altoona were Joyce Walker and Lois Erickson. The group was accompanied by Mr. J. S. Jensen, Mrs. G. Steiner and Jack Gorton of Eau Claire. Misfortune beset one group of the party when Gorton's car became mired in the mud near the Humbird school house. A wrecker was called and after two hours of work the car was removed. Squad Dined by Mms. Anding and Sommers Mesdames R. Anding and daughter J. T. Sommers, Bartlett Ave., were hostesses at a 5:30 banquet Tuesday evening to the Altoona high school basketball team. The dinner was served in the Bethlehem Lutheran church parlors. The table was decorated in the Easter theme, with a large white cake topped with a miniature basketball as a center piece. The table decorations were completed with red, white and blue candles as a patriotic touch. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Schwartz and son, Warren, were the only guests outside the team and Einar Pedersen. Miss Lydia Sires aided Mrs. Sommers in serving, and Mrs. Lee Sires assisted Mrs. Anding in the kitchen. ++++++++++++++++++++ More news coming tomorrow! See you then. -- Nance
