    3. >From Ed Semisch's column "Past Events" of Thursday, 30 October 1941 in the Altoona Tribune: A box car jumped the tracks and tipped over, east of the depot in Altoona R.R. yards Friday morning, 3 October 1919. The box car was put on the rip track for repairs. Conductor Ed. Laughlin with new "Mike" freight engine No. 404 on time freight train No. 86 from Minneapolis, on its way to Chicago, had a wreck six miles east of Altoona on the east boutd main line track on Wednesday morning, 21 October 1914. Six loaded box cars jumped off the track and tipped over. A broken journal caused the wreck. Geo. Larson with switch engine No. 335 was helping time freight No. 86 over "Nine mile hill" six miles east of Altoona. Switch engine No. 335 pulled part of the freight train No. 86 back to Altoona, and engine No. 404 pulled part of it to Fall Creek. The Altoona wrecker was called to pick up the wreck. East bound trains had to run on the west bound main line track between Altoona and Fall Creek for 12 hours. The Eau Claire street cars No. 103 and 104 that were off the track in Altoona Saturday morning, 12 October 1918, were put back on the track by the Minnesota-Wisconsin Light and Power Co. section men. ++++++++++++++++ In the same paper is a column entitled "RailWays, The Railway Workers Section of the Altoona Tribune". The following is from that column: Brakeman A. A. volkman is back in Altoona for a fifteen-day leave from army duty. He likes the army and navy training but wishes he had more paydays. "I am always broke the next morning after payday," says Axel, "and then I start twenty-nine days of wishing that I had been more conservative. By the time payday rolls around again I have been without money so long and am so anxious to get out and roam around that I go right out and spend all my money again." ++++++++++++++++++++++ I guess times haven't changed all that much have they? This happens at our house alot! Have a great day everyone! Hoping to hear from others on this list, Nance ECCMLO mailto:[email protected]
