I did some looking based on your clue about Anton Mertens and came up with a tree indicating that Anton Mertens wife was Margaret Krupp. Johann's father would either have been her brother Wilhelm Heinrich (b. c. 1772) or Joseph (b. c. 1780). Their father was George Antonius Krupp, of Peppenshoven, Ramershoven, Rheinbach, Rheinland. This tree goes 2 more generations back. Does this ring true with what you know? I didn't see any mention of Steinheim, but I am not familiar with place names and proximities. Regan
