Hi folks, It's been a while since I've had a chance to sit down and get some work done, and be able to tell you all about it. Today's new addition to the Eau Claire Co. WIGenWeb site, aside from all of the new Surnames (!), is a category called "Schools". Within this new category, we'll be reading about school histories, stories that students have written about their communities (old), lists of students and teachers, and display photos and memorabilia. This is a category I've been thinking about for quite some time, but needed someone to give me the extra boost to get going on it. Ann was that helpful person. She's donated scans of a booklet for the Grandview School located in Wilson Township. I've added her donation to the history of the area around the school that was written in 1949. There are alot more histories to be added to this page, which I will be working on as time goes by. So be sure to check out our new Schools section when you get a chance. You'll find it here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wieaucla/schools/schools.htm Be sure to check out Ann's contributions (links are at the bottom of Grandview School page - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wieaucla/schools/grandview.htm) Take care and have a great week, everyone! -- Nance mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net

Wi Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/EauClaire/10690 Surname: ------------------------- Boy this is a great question, and I can only help a little. Drammen township was set off from the town of Brunswick (to the north) in 1873. The origninal name of the township was Lant. Waldemar Ager (Eau Claire's most famous Norwegian citizen) wrote : "..we have about three thousand persons born in Norway residing in Eau Claire county.[writing in 1914]. Comparatively few of these live in the country, the land in Eau Claire county not being to their liking. There is a strong settlement in the south-west corner of the county, in the towns of Pleasent Valley [my Hanson relatives found this land to their liking] and Drammen, ...The oldest setttlements are in the Pleasant Valley, Drammen and Otter Creek townships." Ager goes on to describe where in Norway most of Eau Claire's Norwegian immigrants came from; Borum iron workers, the Gudbrandsdalen Valley, some from the Trondelagen region and others from Nordland "the land of the midnight sun." The above information comes from the book, "History of Eau Claire County Wisconsin: Past and Present Including an account of the Cities, Towns and Villages of the County." Editor in Chief Judge William F. Bailey. C.F. Cooper & Co.: Chicago. 1914. Hope this gives you a sense of the landscape of this small part of Eau Claire county!

Do you have an approximate area I could look around? Of course not every creek is named either. This is kind of a large map, so am unsure if it is scannable or not. You might try the 1895 Atlas site on the web too.

I have a picture of gg-grandfather, who was a barber, and a calendar dated 1911 from Augusta State Bank is clearly visable in the picture. We're having a terrible time getting any information on him. Believe first name to be Chancelor (sp?) TAINTER. Only know wifes first name, Anna. There is also something that looks like it could possibly be a license. Were barber license or business licenses required in Eau Clair c. 1911? Thank you for any leads here! Debbie

She was married to Franklin P. FLAGG on 28 May 1873. All indications show they were married in or near Eau Claire Co., WI but I don't have any info on their lives after the wedding. I do know that either Franklin or one of his brothers had a son named Harry Flagg and have since found out that the oldest son, Bliss Cutler was married to Mary Ann Bangle. It looks as though Bliss and Mary Ann remained in WI.

Do you have parent names for your Ernest Rudolph Reetz or Ida Bertha Marquardt? My records to not show either of their names so we should exchange further information in order to determine a connection. I would be happy to share any information I have. I do have extensive records from St. James Trinity Lutheran Church in Fall Creek and St. John's Lutheran Church in the Town of Lincoln. I do recall seeing some births, deaths and marriages listed in these resources for REETZ and MARQUARDT. Let's swap details and see if we can make the connections. Jim Tellstrom, Sturgeon Bay, WI

Nance, That Bear's Grass cemetery sounds like that might be it. All my dad could tell me was that his father took him out around Augusta to the cemetery. The grave I am looking for is that of Wilhelmina nee Kuehn Hammer. I have posted about her before. She married Philip Hammer in Lincoln Twp, aka Fall Creek, and later her and Philip lived in Bridge Creek Twp, aka Augusta, so that might be the right cemetery. Thank you so much for checking for me this weekend. I am so heartbroken over not being able to honor Wilhelmina's grave. I am sure that no one in my father's family has been there at least since the time my father went in the early 60's, if that was indeed the grave they visited. Thanks again. Does anyone know of any small cemeteries around Augusta? I am looking for one that my father says his father took him to when he was a young boy. There are some graves of my family there, but my father can't remember who and his father has long since passed away. If you know of any graveyard, out in a field, small and unmarked by a name, please contact me. Thanks in advance. Names that are possible are: Forrest HENDERSON (b. late 1800s); W.E. HENDERSON (1847-1944)m.Martha Artmissy "Mattie" RICHARDSON; John J. RICHARDSON (1826-1910)m. Caroline Estes Henry RICHARDSON (m. Any kind of information on this family (the HENDERSON'S), and Forrest in particular, is greatly appreciated.
