    2. Tim Dowling
    3. This week I received an original copy of "THE KODAK" 1896 Commencement, published by the Athletic Club of the Eau Claire High Schoool. It contains a photograph of the class of '96 and the complete text of all papers presented by the members of the class. There is another book with the cover "Opera House, Eau Claire, Wis., Graduating Exercises of the Free High School, Friday Afternoon at 2:30, and Evening at 7:30, June 5th, 1896." It is titled "Who's Who 1896-1946 Eau Claire High School, Being the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Graduation of the Class of 1896". This book contains biographies of most members of the same class. Names are posted in separate messages on the board. --- ljwold@peoplepc.com wrote: > > I have just bought some year books at an auction. > The Emerald from Fall Creek,1962,63,64,69 and 71. > And from Eau Claire Collage. 1. [WIEAUCLA] short story worth reading
    2. This was from another list which I belong to, author unknown. The Story Tellers... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That  we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them  and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and  old to step up and put flesh on the bones." Ruth Ann, Ohio

Hi Patsy, Thank you for your concern with the possibility of a virus on this mail list. As list administrator, I post to this list more frequently than most, and have not had any problem with receiving any viruses. And, yeah, it's not something that I encourage that we talk about on the list. Why? Because there is no possible way for a Windows virus to infect the Unix servers that Rootsweb uses for lists. And since attachments are not allowed, they cannot be passed THROUGH the servers, either. In most cases, the person who has the infected computer doesn't even know they have the virus. So, be patient, be cautious about opening ANY attachments, and please let's not cause a panic by talking about it on this list, as these things are spread outside of the Rootsweb mailing lists. I'd sure appreciate it! An excellent explanation of this can be found at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus I would encourage anyone who has concerns about viruses and mail lists to please read the info on this site. Thanks, everyone for staying calm. -- Nance mailto:nsampson@spacestar.net

    1. [WIEAUCLA] Marcus THRANE
    2. People who some twenty-five years ago saw Marcus Thrane on the streets on the streets of our city -- a feeble old man, generally followed by two big dogs -- or those who had learned to know him as a lover of children, flowers and music, would hardly believe that this kind old man had once been the unwilling cause of the mobilizing of an army in a European kingdom. Mr. Thrane came from one of the best Norwegian families; his uncle was the famous Norwegian composer, Waldemar Thrane. As a young man Marcus Thrane came in contact with the ideas that later on through the "Internationale" laid the foundation for the modern socialist movement. Marcus Thrane became the leader of the workingmen in Norway. His platform, which was considered dangerous at the time, was very moderate indeed, and nearly all his reforms were later on carried through by the regular political agencies of Norway. He was, however, looked upon as a dangerous individual, and arrested and kept for years in con! finement. When he was arrested Norway was on the verge of a revolutionary uprising. The whole of Europe was fermented with it at the time, and it was probably this that made the authorities of Norway nervous. Marcus Thrane had been at rest in his grave at the Lake View cemetery many years before the people of Norway understood what an able, farseeing and in fact moderate reformer he had been, and to recognize all he had done for the uplifting of the laboring classes of Norway. His name is an honored one now, and several monuments have been erected with his likeness cast in bronze. He was born October 14, 1817, and died in 1891. His son, Dr. A. Thrane, is a well-known practicing physician in our city. - Transcribed from the "History of Eau Claire County Wisconsin, 1914" pages 579 & 580

    1. [WIEAUCLA] Re: Drammem Lutheran Church Cemetery
    2. I have been lost a number of times looking for Drammen Lutheran Church Cemetery. So I wrote down the following driving directions: From Eau Claire take Highway 37 south out of town. Follow it until Highway 85 splits off to the right. Continue on Hwy. 37 but mark milage from this point. Go 9.5 miles on Hwy. 37 to County Road ZZ. It's a left turn off of 37. Follow ZZ 2.1 miles to County Road B, turn right on B for a short distance, the church and cemetery are just ahead on the left.
