They are buried in the Buffalo Cemetery in Cass County ND. My mother is LaVonne Moug Carlson daughter of Earl Moug and granddaughter of Esther Smith Moug. I would really like to know more about Martin Lorenzo Smith' s ancestry from Illinois. I do know that he was a Civil War soldier and served with some troops from Minnesota. I believe he was either a farm hand for Horace Sheldon Noteware in Wisconsin and that he was quite a bit older than Emma. Another ancestor I would like to know about is Esther Johnson who married Horace Sheldon Noteware she was from Pennsylvania and the trail gets cold there. If you look on the free website www.lancashirebmd.org.uk when their daughters Alice BEECH (1876) and Lilian BEECH (1878) were born their mother's maiden name was given as HAW. There was a marriage in 1859 at Spalding Q3 of a Henry BEECH and Harriott HAW. My grandparents, my mother & her sister used to visit them at The Haven, 3 Devonshire Road, Rishton. They had no children. Hannah died in 1937 and left £393. William died in 1948 and left £1404. It doesn't sound much now but have been quite a good sum at that time. My mother's sister married a young man who lived next door to them. Harriet and John Andrew ATKINSON did have two daughters who came over to England with their father for a visit. My late mother remembered seeing them - Lillian (REONNEBURG) 1893-1943 and Millicent (PINNOW) 1895-1937. There was also a brother Robert ATKINSON 1897-1902 who I think I have found as buried at Bethel Hawthorne Cemetery, Clarno. In 1881 Harriet and her BEECH family were living in the village of Lower House, Habergham Eaves, Burnley, not from from John A ATKINSON. I think they would have gone to the same school at Lower House. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Harriet was a cousin to Alfred Armstrong. Harriet and John raised Alfred's son George after Alfred's wife died. George was about 4 at the time. George was my great grandfather. I know John and Harriet had 2 daughters and a son who died young. Alfred also came from Spalding Lincolnshire, England. His mother was Ann Beach daughter of George Beach and Frances Coy. Harriet is the daughter of Henry Beach and Harriet Hawes. Henry and Ann are siblings. I have been working on this Beach family a while. The back of the painting says ROCKY MOUNTAIN in NATIONAL PARK. To my logic that does not mean in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park, but it could be. The style matches the few I can see on line. It's a keepsake from a deceased Aunt and Uncle who collected many nice oil originals from other landscape artists. Contact if interested. Good luck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: nikvonruden Surnames: Mertinke Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.eauclaire/2348.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Sandy! I'm the great, great grandson of George Bruno Mertinke and Wilhelmine Stuermer. Their two sons were named George Bruno Mertinke and Paul Louis Mertinke. My mother's maiden name is Mertinke. She's the daughter of Ernest Arthur Mertinke and Ida Martha Sell. My grandfather Ernest is the son of George Bruno Mertinke (eldest son of George and Wilhelmine). My uncle Vernon Mertinke still lives in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He's in his nineties now but still mentally sharp. I don't think he knows all that much about family history, however. My cousin Michael Martin's wife Gale is sorta the family genealogist on that side of the family. I don't have an email address or phone number for her, but I could probably get one. One of the U.S. Census records that I've seen lists my great-grandfather as having emigrated to the U.S. in 1873. He settled in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I've never met any of the descendents of Paul Louis Mertinke and Hannah Arnsdorf, so I can't help you there. From what I've been able to research via U.S. Census records, Paul's emigration is a bit confusing. One census record lists it as 1874 and another as 1885. I'm gonna guess that the 1874 date is probably the correct one. I cannot imagine a mother wanting to be separated from her children for longer than necessary. My guess is that they had to save up the money to send each son one at a time. But that's only a guess. Anyway, he too settled in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. My Ancestry family tree ought to be public, so feel free to look at it. Please let me know if you don't have access to it. I can be reached at nikvonruden@comcast.net Best Regards, Nicholas M. von Ruden Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
